The end half of the meet was eventually canceled due to the weather.Final Results One of the biggest moments from Saturday’s action came from freshman Jelani Watkins in heat two of the 100 meter. The race marked his collegiate opener in the event and he made his way to a time of 10.01 seconds (+2.1 m/s), just over the wind-legal limit of 2.0 m/s. Watkins finished taking second next to the World-Championship competitor Eddie Nketia by just .004 of a second. The time tied him with Nketia for the national lead and makes him the sole leader of the SEC. The meet finished early due to inclement weather, but it only took Jevan Parara one throw to leave his mark at the meet. Parara tossed the No. 8 mark in LSU performance-list history of 56.13 meters (184’ 2”) on his first and only attempt. Freshman Chad Hendricks took second behind him, also only getting one throw due to the weather, reaching the distance of 55.06 meters (180’ 7”). Sophomore Leah Acosta had an injury scare last season that left her unable to walk and required screws in her ankle. Today she made her collegiate debut in disc throw and was able to crack the LSU Top-10 list in it. Acosta reached a mark of 51.88 meters (170’ 2”) on her fifth toss of the afternoon, putting her at No. 9 in LSU history. She also recorded a PR of 14.60 meters (47’ 10.75” in shot put, which was just short of the LSU PL. Taylor Fingers leaped out to a win today in her triple-jump opener. The sophomore reached a distance of 13.04 meters (42’ 9.5”) to earn the win, but the mark was over the allowable wind limit of +4.0 m/s. Her top legal mark on the day came in at 12.68 meters (41’ 7.25”). The men’s high jump was one of the few events going on when the meet eventually was canceled due to the weather, but the event was moved inside to close the meet. Freshman Kam Franklin reached a personal-best height of 2.17 meters (7’ 1.25”) to finish third in his opener. Franklin’s height puts him at No. 8 on the all-time LSU PL outdoors. The Sandy Tigs are back on the road next weekend to Tallahassee, Florida for the Unconquered Invitational. “Today is a day that our team grew up a little bit,” said head coach Russell Brock. “You couldn’t have had a longer day of competition and there wasn’t any break in the programs we had to play against today. To play three top teams that the rest of the country assumed were better than us by a pretty significant margin and to come out with two wins and push the match with the number one team in the country to the very edge of victory, I couldn’t be prouder of this group. Obviously, we still have another match to play tomorrow against another really good team, so there’s still work left to do, but I can’t wait to see how we respond to another matchup against one of the top teams in the country. This team is special. I love working with them.” LSU started out the day with a 3-2 reverse sweep win against No. 4 USC. Aubrey O’Gorman and Julia Sprecher lost Court 2; 8-21 and 17-21, while Elle Evers and Camryn Chatellier fell on Court 3; 14-21 and 17-21, to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead. The Tigers went to three sets on Courts 1, 4, and 5 to grab the win from USC. Emily Meyer and Skylar Martin got the first point on the board for LSU, winning Court 5; 18-21, 21-15, 15-13. Gabi Bailey and Parker Bracken evened up the match, winning Court 1; 21-16, 18-21, and 15-13. Tatum Finlason and Kate Baker clinched the match for the Tigers winning Court 4 in extra points; 21-19, 27-29, and 21-19. After a break, the Sandy Tigs faced No. 1 UCLA and fell short, 3-2. Meyer and Baker fell on Court 5; 16-21 and 20-22, while O’Gorman and Sprecher lost on Court 2; 18-21 and 13-21, to give UCLA a 2-0 lead in the dual. Evers and Chatellier lost on Court 3; 17-21 and 19-21, to give the Bruins the win. Though the Tigers had lost the duel, the game was played to completion. Bailey and Bracken went into extra points on Court 1 to give the Sandy Tigs dual point number two to finish out the match; 21-18 and 34-32. After a rain delay, LSU finished off the day with another AVCA Top 10 win against No. 9 Long Beach State. LSU will host UCLA, USC, Stanford, Texas, FSU, Long Beach State, and TCU—all expected to be in the AVCA Top 20. “We took another step forward this weekend,” said head coach Russell Brock. “It was definitely a positive contribution to the resume for the season. We haven’t found all the answers yet, but we have found enough to win some big matches against some solid opponents. This was our most complete weekend yet, and we for sure will be looking to improve this week as we get back to training.” LSU began the day with a hard-fought match that eventually ended in No. 2 Loyola Marymount’s favor, 3-2. Tatum Finlason and Yali Ashush fell on Court 4; 15-21 and 14-21, while Aubrey O’Gorman and Julia Sprecher lost Court 2; 15-21 and 10-21, to give the Lions a 2-0 lead heading into the second wave. Elle Evers and Camryn Chatellier fell on Court 3; 18-21 and 9-21, to give LMU the win. Though the Lions clinched the match first, the game was played to completion. The Sandy Tigs are on the road for the third weekend in a row to Austin, Texas for the East Meets West tournament, March 21-22. LSU will face No. 2 LMU, No. 7 California, No. 10 Arizona State and No. 14 GCU over the course of the weekend. “Really proud of our group this weekend,” said head coach Russell Brock. “We were challenged every time we stepped in the sand. Today we definitely made progress. Winning is always an inevitable measure in athletics. It would have been great to have more wins, but we finished on a great note and thankfully we have many more chances to not only improve but also to get some more big wins as we work through our season.” LSU began the day with a 0-5 loss against No. 7 California, where three courts lost in straight sets while two battled it out in three. In the first wave, Aubrey O’Gorman and Julia Sprecher lost Court 2; 18-21 and 13-21. Elle Evers and Skylar Martin battled back after a first set loss to take Court 4 to three sets but ultimately lost; 13-21, 22-20, and 9-15 to give the California Bears a 2-0 lead going into the second wave. LSU will face No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 LMU, No. 9 California, and No. 15 Hawaii over the course of the weekend. “Today was really impressive,” said head coach Russell Brock. “To win every match we got to complete in the conditions we played in today was a great test. I’m so impressed with this group. Really to only have the one injury loss, and we were up in that match, over the whole weekend is a fantastic showing.” LSU began the day with a 4-1 win over Stephen F. Austin in their morning match to start the day off 1-0. LSU forfeited the match on Court 5 due to injury to make the dual score 0-1 in SFA’s favor. Skylar Martin and Emily Meyer evened up the match for the Tigers with a dominant win on Court 4; 21-11 and 21-14. Tatum Finlason and Camryn Chatellier gave the Sandy Tigs the lead with a win on Court 3; 21-13 and 21-13. Both Courts 1 and 2 went to three sets to decide the match. Senior Emily Meyer and freshman Camryn Chatellier are both on a 10-game win streak individually.The Sandy Tigs are back on the road next weekend to Monroe, Louisiana for the ULM Bayou Bash, March 7-8. LSU will play four matches over the course of two days and face both ULM and Stephen F. Austin twice. “This weekend was really solid,” said head coach Russell Brock. “We knew coming in that we wanted to look at some lineup variations and we’d also have plenty of extra matchups to allow people the chance to make a statement about their play and the strength of particular pairs. I thought the team did a great job of competing, working hard, and ultimately coming out with five team wins. Finishing the weekend 5-0 was a big goal and to do that against some competitive teams was important for our season. There’s no doubt that we are better right now than we were last week. This week will be a big chance to work on more details we are uncovering as we play. Excited that we don’t have school for the next couple days and the chance to really dive into preparation.” LSU began the day with a 5-0 victory over UT Martin. Meanwhile, Kentucky drops to 6-4 and 0-2 in the conference. “Today was a hard-fought win, and the girls deserved the result,” said Head Coach Taylor Fogleman. “It is always great to get a win in conference play. However, there are areas of improvement to strengthen before our next match. I thought Kentucky performed very well today. Head Coach Shelly Jaudon has done a great job leading this program; their team tested us today. The ladies will rest and return to work tomorrow before hosting a doubleheader on Sunday, which includes a top team in the country, No. 7 Tennessee. The No. 22 duo of Anita Sahdiieva and Tilwith Di Girolami opened doubles play on the top spot over Elizabeth Stevens and Ellie Eades. The LSU duo jumped to a quick 4-0 lead before Kentucky got on the board at 4-1. Sahdiieva and Di Girolami responded with back-to-back games to seal the win at 6-1. On the season, the pair improved to 8-1 overall and 2-0 on the top doubles court. On Court No. 2, Kenna Erickson and Gaby Rivera battled against Julia Zhu and Asuncion Jadue in a back-and-forth matchup. The Tiger pair grabbed an early 1-0 lead before Kentucky pulled ahead at 2-1. Erickson and Rivera responded to tie it at 2-2, but the Wildcats regained the advantage at 3-2. The Tigers found their rhythm from there, taking the last four matches to win 6-3, awarding LSU the doubles point. No. 72 Di Girolami kicked off singles play against her doubles foe and Kentucky’s singles ace, Stevens, on the No. 2 spot. The freshman started well, racing to a 3-0 lead before Stevens took a game. The Tiger extended her advantage, but Stevens cut the deficit to 4-2. However, the Belgian native took the final two games, closing out the first set with a 6-2 win. Di Girolami shifted the momentum in her favor after a 1-1 start in the second set, stringing together three consecutive games for a 4-1 advantage. Stevens managed to trim the lead to 4-2, but Di Girolami sealed the straight-set victory at 6-2 to bolster her singles record to 8-2 on the campaign. The result gave LSU a 2-0 match lead. Cadence Brace faced off against Zoe Hammond on the top court. Brace built a 3-0 lead in the first set before Hammond made it 3-1. The freshman took the final three of four games to close the opening set with a 6-2 win. In the second set, Brace left no doubt on the match, shutting the door with a 6-0 sweep to secure the win and giving LSU a 3-0 match lead. The Canadian native now holds a three-match singles winning streak on the season. Erickson fought hard against Tess Bucher on the fifth spot but came up short in straight sets. After an early 3-1 lead in the first set, Erickson saw Bucher rally to even the score at 4-4 before dropping the set 6-4. In the second, Bucher took control early, and despite Erickson closing the gap to 3-2, the Wildcat pulled away for a 6-2 win, giving Kentucky a point on the board. Sahdiieva was up next in singles and took on No. 59 Zhu on the No. 3 court. After a back-and-forth start in the first set, Sahdiieva held a 3-2 lead before Zhu took control, winning four straight games to take the set 6-3. In the second, Sahdiieva briefly leveled the score at 1-1, but Zhu pulled away, closing the match with a 6-2 victory, making the match score 3-2 in favor of LSU. With all eyes on the sixth court, No. 121 Rivera battled with Ellie Myers. After dropping the opening game, Rivera delivered a great performance, winning six straight games to take the first set 6-1. The second set was a battle, with Rivera trailing 1-3 before rallying to tie it at 3-3. The senior jumped ahead 4-3, but Myers kept it close, forcing a 6-6 tiebreak.
