Da Boot Sports 8/31/2025 LSU Sports Communications By: LSU Staff BATON ROUGE – The LSU Soccer team (4-2-0) took down UC Davis (1-2-2) by a final score of 3-2 on Sunday night to protect their home pitch and remain undefeated in Baton Rouge in 2025. Senior Ida Hermannsdottir scored two goals to lead the way for the Tigers on the night, earning the third brace of her career and helping the Tigers to a comeback victory over the Aggies. Graduate transfer Morgan Witz also tallied a goal on the night to help secure the win. “The two goals we conceded tonight were two that we never should have. They were basic errors on our end, but all credit to UC Davis for capitalizing,” said head coach Sian Hudson. “I thought we were the dominant team for the majority of the game. We created so many opportunities and I’m just proud of our players for continuing to push and fight through adversity the whole match. It wasn’t our cleanest or best performance, but sometimes I think soccer at this level is just about finding a way to win, and we did that tonight.” UC Davis struck first in the sixth minute when Tiger goalkeeper Sophine Kevorkian attempted to clear the ball out of the box, which deflected off UC Davis midfielder Genavieve Fontes and left an open net for Fontes to knock it in and take an early 1-0 lead. The Tigers were able to equalize in the 21st minute when defender Kelsey Major crossed the ball into the box toward forward Ava Galligan, who was tripped by an Aggie defender and earned a penalty kick for LSU. Hermansdottir stepped up to the penalty spot and confidently struck the ball to the bottom left corner, sliding past the Aggie keeper and evening the match 1-1. Hermannsdottir’s penalty kick was her second goal of the year and 21st of her career. She is also now five out of six on PK’s in her career. The Aggies struck again in the 35th minute when a Tiger defender dispossessed the ball just outside the box leaving UC Davis’ Lisette Gregoris with a great look at the goal. The Aggie forward promptly lofted it over the head of Kevorkian, taking the 2-1 lead into the second half. Despite being down a goal at the end of the first 45 minutes, the Tigers controlled possession for the majority of the first half and tallied ten shots. LSU came out aggressive in the second half, attempting four shots in the first ten minutes, but the Tigers were still looking to find an equalizer. In the 67th minute, forward Sariyah Bailey blew past the Aggie backline and crossed the ball inside the box, where it deflected off Hermanndottir and found Witz, who wasted no time and touched the ball into the back of the net to tie the game 2-2. It was Witz’s second goal of the season and at LSU. The Tigers found the back of the net again just 90 seconds later. LSU midfielder Gabbi Ceballos found the feet of Bailey, who once again found herself in a position to cross the ball to an incoming Hermansdottir, who headed it into the goal. Her goal gave LSU the 3-2 lead on the night. LSU managed to fight off UC Davis the remainder of the match to secure their third victory inside the LSU Soccer Stadium this year and Head Coach Sian Hudson’s 50th career win as the leader of the Tigers. The home team finished with 27 shot attempts compared to the Aggies five. Nine of those shots were on target, forcing the UC Davis keeper to record six saves. Junior forward Ava Galligan secured the game winner after knocking a header to the back of the net from a cross by freshman forward Sariyah Bailey in the 90th minute. Makenna Dominguez earned the first assist on the goal after she sent the through ball to Bailey, who sent in the cross and tallied an assist herself. The last time LSU defeated a ranked opponent at home was October 28, 2021 against No. 4 Arkansas. “We’re just thrilled to see the team respond like that after losing the game in the last minute last week. They grew from that moment and made it count until the final whistle tonight,” said head coach Sian Hudson. “Overall, we’re just really pleased with the whole team's performance. I think Wisconsin is a fantastic team and difficult to beat, so that was a massive win for us tonight. We'll use this momentum to springboard forward now onto the next.” In the first 45 minutes of action, neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Tiger defense held Wisconsin to just two shots, and senior goalkeeper Sophine Kevorkian recorded one save. The first half ended scoreless. LSU picked up the tempo early on in the second half, recording two shots on goal in the first five minutes of action, but were still looking for the right moment to capitalize. The Badgers threatened in the 75th minute when a corner kick was sent into the box and knocked from the head of Wisconsin’s Erin Connolly off the crossbar before ultimately being deflected out of bounds. With less than a minute on the clock to play, Dominguez dribbled into Badger territory before finding Bailey who sent the ball into the box. Galligan slipped past the Wisconsin back line and headed the ball over the outstretched hands of the Badger goalkeeper. The goal was Galligan’s fourth of the season and 13th of her career. “What an unbelievable header,” added Hudson. “Just her strength, resilience and character to pull through when it mattered most and put that one away was amazing.” The Tigers finished the game with seven shots, three of which were on target. The defense held off constant Wisconsin attacks limiting the Badgers to just two shots on goal. Kevorkian made two saves in the game and recorded her second clean sheet of the year and fourth as a Tiger. LSU returns home this Sunday, August 31 as they take on UC Davis at 7 p.m. CT on SECN+. Junior forward Ava Galligan and senior midfielder Ida Hermannsdottir found the back of the net for the Tigers, tallying the first goals of the season and securing a victory in the season opener. LSU has won four of five of their season opening matches since 2021 under Head Coach Sian Hudson's tenure. “I think you've always got to be excited just to get the first win of the season under your belt. We knew South Alabama was going to be incredibly organized and difficult to break down, but we were really patient in possession and just kept grinding away,” said Hudson. “We’re really satisfied with the win, but most importantly, keeping a clean sheet. We've been preaching all preseason about defensive solidarity, grit and determination, and we did that to protect our home. Now, we’re looking forward to playing against the national finalist in Wake Forest on the weekend!” In the 2025 season opener between the Tigers and the Jags, neither side was able to produce a chance on goal in the first half. LSU attempted six shots with one on target from sophomore Amy Smith, but that was all. The Tiger defense kept the ball away from their side of the field, holding the Jaguars to just two shots. It was scoreless at the halfway point in Baton Rouge as LSU needed to find a spark in the final 45 minutes. The Tigers found a breakthrough in the 74th minute thanks to Galligan. The junior got around a South Alabama defender just at the edge of the box and took a shot from ten yards out to put LSU on the board. The goal was the first of the season and tenth in Galligan’s career, who also scored against the Jags in last year’s season opener. “Ava had missed a chance, you know, a few minutes earlier, but she had the bit between her teeth and just the determination to win it and then go ahead and find a really clutch goal for us in a really big moment,” added Hudson. “Huge credit to her.” Hermannsdottir extended the LSU lead in the 87th minute to 2-0. The Tigers found their way into the box when forward Smith was fouled, awarding the home team a penalty kick. Hermannsdottir’s PK was initially blocked by South Alabama goalkeeper Jaidin Kinch, but the senior continued to follow through, making two more attempts at finding the back of the net before whipping out a bicycle kick on the third attempt that couldn’t be saved. On Ida’s goal, Hudson said “obviously she had the penalty and took three bites at the cherry, but she had unbelievable improvisation there with the bicycle kick to put it home.” It was the 20th career goal for Hermannsdottir in the Purple & Gold as she is already on track to secure her fourth season as the Tigers leading scorer. The Tigers won the possession battle on the night over the Jags to kick off the season in the win column. Senior goalkeeper Sophine Kevorkian played the full 90 minutes in between the posts and recorded two saves to keep a clean sheet on the night, the third of her career for the Tigers. Nine Tigers made their debut on the pitch tonight in the squad’s season opener, including Spain natives Sol Taboada Martinez and Mireia Sanchez, plus freshmen Ryann Denecour and Sariyah Bailey. In their second season, Senai Rogers and Sarah Stadler made their first career appearances in the Purple & Gold, while Annaleigh Bruser also made her return from injury last season. Graduate transfers Makenna Dominguez and Morgan Witz also checked in for the first time as Tigers against South Alabama, both earning the start and playing over 50 minutes each, respectively. This year’s captain and key piece to the backline, Jazmin Ferguson, was the only other Tiger to play the full 90 minutes on the night. John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life.
