KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The LSU Soccer team (5-5-1, 0-2-1 SEC) fell to No. 5 Tennessee (8-1-1, 2-1-0 SEC) by a final score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in Regal Soccer Stadium.

Tennessee took the win in their SEC home opener thanks to goals from Leah Klurman and Kate Runyon. Tiger forward Ida Hermannsdottir got on the scoreline for LSU on the day.

The Tigers controlled possession to begin the game, creating multiple opportunities that didn’t come to head in front of the goal. Forwards Morgan Witza and Ava Galligan found open space in front the box and sent in crosses that didn’t find feet.

Tennessee opened the scoring on the day in the 32nd minute as Leah Klurman struck the ball from distance to the upper right 90 and just past LSU keeper Scheving. The Tigers attempted to equalize in the remaining minutes of the first half, but were unlucky and entered the second half trailing 1-0.

Amy Smith and Ava Galligan tallied shots for the Tiger offense in the first half while Scheving recorded one save in the first 45 minutes for the LSU defense. Senior centerback Jazmin Ferguson also held down the defense, making crucial plays to help keep Tennessee’s lead to one.

Ida Hermannsdottir came out hot in the second half looking for the equalizer for LSU. She took a strong chance in the 62nd minute inside the box that just went high.
Tennessee extended their lead to 2-0 in the 66th minute on a goal from Kate Runyon. Runyon got stuck in traffic against three Tiger defenders, but was able to find a touch on a deflected ball that got past Scheving.

Hermannsdottir was able to cut the Tennessee lead in the 70th minute thanks to a foul on Sariyah Bailey in the box that led to a penalty kick. The senior forward delivered to put LSU on the board and make the score 2-1 on the day. The goal was her sixth straight successful penalty kick of her career, also marking her fourth goal of the year and 23rd of her career.

The Tigers continued to fight for the equalizer, with Gabbi Ceballos, Bailey and Hermannsdottir all creating chances.
Hermannsdottir took a free kick at the top of the box that Tennessee keeper Cayden Norris just got a hand on to stop the shot.

LSU defender Jocelyn Ollivierre also took a strong attempt in the 82nd minute that was saved by Norris.

Despite the Tigers strong efforts in the final minutes to equalize, they ultimately came up short and Tennessee finished with their 2-1 scoreline.

The Tigers outshot the Vols in the second half 11-7 in the second half compared to 2-8 in the first half. Bailey and Hermannsdottir both finished the match with two shots on goal each, while Scheving finished the day with two saves, moving her total to 13 on the year.

BATON ROUGE – The LSU Soccer team (5-4-1, 0-1-1 SEC) came up short in a 2-1 battle against Alabama (7-2-1, 1-1-0 SEC) on Thursday night at the LSU Soccer stadium.
The Tigers strong effort fell just short due to a deciding 83rd minute goal from Alabama that gave the Tide a 2-1 lead and ultimately leading to the Tigers dropping their SEC home opener. LSU had a three-match win streak at home prior to tonight’s result.

“Just a disappointing loss. I don’t think the result reflected the performance,” said head coach Sian Hudson.

“Overall, it was a quality performance, but this is the fourth game we’ve lost this season where we’ve gifted the opponent a goal and then missed on big chances to put the game away. We had four or five big chances in the second half to win the game. We’ve just got to show a little bit more of a cutthroat mentality in SEC play if we want to win games in this conference. You’ve got to be able to put the game away.”

Both teams battled back and forth for the first 40 minutes of the match. Alabama was able to secure the opening goal with just three minutes left in the first half. The Tide were awarded a corner kick after Tiger defender Jazmin Ferguson made a great effort to clear the ball out of bounds from an Alabama attack. Alabama’s Nadia Ramadan took the corner and snuck it into the near top corner for an Olympico, giving the Tide a 1-0 lead. The score held into the halftime break.

The Tigers came out hot and got their first real chance in the 66th minute when freshman forward Sariyah Bailey fired a rocket from ten yards outside the box that hit the crossbar and came straight down, landing across the goal line and tying the score at 1-1. It was Bailey’s second goal of the season and of her young career.

LSU threatened again in the 75th minute thanks to a goal kick from Tiger goalkeeper Audi Scheving that traveled half the field and was knocked off the head of junior forward Ava Galligan to fellow forward and graduate student Morgan Witz. Witz had a one-on-one opportunity with the Tide goalkeeper in a chance to take the lead, but missed just wide.

In the 83rd minute, Alabama forward Gianna Paul crossed the ball into the center of the Tiger territory, where it was kicked out to the top of the box. The ball found the feet of Alabama’s Ramadan who struck the ball to the goalkeeper’s right before it deflected off a Tiger defender and into the back of the net. The brace gave Ramadan her third and fourth goals of the year.

The remaining seven minutes of the match saw Alabama hold off the energetic Tiger attacks as LSU looked to equalize yet again. The Tide were able to come out successful in the match and hold onto the 2-1 victory.

Both squads tallied a total of 12 shots with the Tigers knocking three on goal and the Tide five. Scheving finished the night with three saves for LSU, moving her total to 11 on the year.

LSU will hit the road this weekend to take on No. 5 Tennessee for a ranked conference opponent taking place in Knoxville on Sunday, September 21 at 1 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The LSU Soccer Team (5-3-1, 0-0-1 SEC) battled it out to a 0-0 draw on the road against No. 13 Vanderbilt (6-1-1, 0-0-1 SEC) on Friday night inside the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.

It was a defensive display from both teams with both goalkeepers playing the role of hero for their teams. LSU’s Audur Scheving finished the night with a season-high seven saves.

The first half was a defensive battle between the two sides, with neither teams able to create quality looks on goal. Scheving had two saves in the opening 45 minutes; a simple catch in the 7th minute and a diving parry in the 42nd minute to keep things level. Those two shots were the only looks on goal of the half and the match sat scoreless after the first half concluded.

The second half was another half limited in terms of quality chances. The Tigers tested Vanderbilt goalkeeper Sara Wojdelko in the 47th, 53rd, and 58th minutes, but were unsuccessful in putting the ball in the back of the net.

Scheving was the hero of the night as her five saves in the second half kept the Tigers in contention. She picked up three saves within 10 minutes in the 51st, 54th, and 59th minutes and added a fourth in the 65th minute.

The next 20 minutes were cagey as neither team could create a quality look on goal. The Tigers found themselves forced to play the final six minutes of the match down a player as midfielder Gabbi Ceballos was shown a red card in the 84th minute following a slide tackle at midfield.

The biggest moment of the match came in the 85th minute as Scheving picked up her seventh and final save of the night. The ball bounced into the LSU box and found the feet of a Commodore attacker, who shot from eight yards in front of goal. Scheving dove to her left and parried the ball away to deny the Commodores a late goal. That save was the final big moment of the match, with both teams finishing goalless after 90 minutes of play.

Vanderbilt outshot LSU by a margin of 15-9, with the Commodores having eight shots on target compared to the Tigers’ three.

Up next, the Tigers will host their lone home match of September when they take on the Alabama Crimson Tide at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday, September 18 at the LSU Soccer Stadium. The match will be streamed via the SEC Network+.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The LSU Soccer Team (5-3-0) wrapped up the non-conference portion of the season with a 2-0 win over the Utah Utes (4-2-1) on Sunday afternoon at Ute Field.
The Tigers out-performed the Utes in Sunday’s matchup, striking first in the 15th minute as forward Amy Smith claimed a goal via deflection from teammate Sariyah Bailey. Already the Tigers leading scorer on the year, junior forward Ava Galligan added another to her resume as she helped secure the win with her goal in the 43rd minute.

LSU goalkeeper Audur Scheving held Utah scoreless in her first start of the season with the help of the Tiger defense in Salt Lake City. It is the squad’s third clean sheet on the year thus far.

The opening 15 minutes of the match saw neither able to create quality looks on goal. The Tigers registered the first shot on goal of the match at the start of the 15th minute, with a shot from forward Morgan Witz saved by Utes goalkeeper Erin Gibbs.

The breakthrough came 35 seconds later. Forward Sariyah Bailey received a ball on the left flank and charged into the box, cut inside to skip past her defender and sent a strong shot on goal from about ten yards out. The shot narrowly deflected off the head of Smith before finding the bottom right corner to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead on the day. The goal was Smith’s first of the season, while the assist was the fourth of the year for the freshman Bailey.

The Tigers maintained control of play throughout the remainder of the first half and did not allow the Utes to get a shot on goal or any quality attacks in their final third. Two minutes before halftime, LSU doubled the lead through their lead goalscorer Galligan. Midfielder Makenna Dominguez carried the ball into the attacking third and sent a through ball on the right flank to Galligan, who burst behind her defender and eventually slotted a right-footed shot near post and past the Utah goalkeeper.

The goal was Galligan’s fifth of the season, Dominguez’s second assist of the year, and it meant that the Tigers would take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

The second half picked up right where the teams left off from the first, with LSU limiting the quality of chances that the Utes had in attack. The match only made it to the 63rd minute before storm clouds rolled in the area, forcing a weather delay at 2:32 local time. While rain did not hit the field during the hour break, lightning strikes within an eight mile radius held up the resumption of the match.

The match resumed at 3:41 local time with 27 minutes of play left to go. The Tigers did not miss a beat despite the delay in play, keeping the ball for the majority of the remainder of the match. The Utes only mustered one shot on goal, a strong shot by Ali Swensen in the 84th minute that was punched away by LSU goalkeeper Audur Scheving. The match finished 2-0 in favor of the visiting Tigers.

Utah outshot the Tigers by a margin of 15-5, but only one of the Utes’ 15 shots was on target while the Tigers had three. Both goalkeepers finished the match with one save. It was a strong defensive day for the Tigers, who did not let the home team get quality chances at scoring a goal.

LSU will open SEC play on the road this week as they head to Nashville, Tennessee to take on the No. 25-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, September 12. The match will be streamed on the SEC Network+.
