BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU returned home to Alex Box Stadium/Skip Bertman Field on Tuesday night and dropped their first game of the season to McNeese, 7-6. LSU pitching struggled all night long and the Tigers were cold at the plate.

Marcos Paz (0-1) got the start on the bump for the Tigers and only went 1.2 innings before running into trouble and being replaced by Cooper Williams. Paz gave up four runs on one hit. Walked two and struck out two. Paz was charged with the loss. No one who took the mound for the Tigers could pitch with any kind of consistency. Jay Johnson used ten total pitchers and no one could step up and get the job done. The Tigers also had a tough night at the plate. LSU pitchers walked six and hit five batters to help out the Cowboys. It was just a bad night for the Bayou Bengals at the Box.

Derek Curiel started the bottom of the first with a single to left field. Jake Brown grounded out, advancing Curiel to second. After Milam popped out, Zach Yorke stepped to the plate and launched a blazing line drive home run to right field. We headed to the second inning with LSU on top, 2-0.

McNeese stepped up in the top of the second, scoring a run, then loading the bases to get Puz replaced by Cooper Williams. The Cowboys plated three more runs before Williams could get the Bayou Bengals back into the dugout. 4-2, McNeese as we headed to the bottom of the second.

LSU continued to struggle in top of the fourth, Dax Dathe had a very short appearance, being replaced by Mavrick Rizy. McNeese loaded the bases with one out and was able to plate two more runs, before Danny Lachenmayer came in to get the final out and stop the bleeding. 7-2, McNeese as we move to the bottom of the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Trent Caraway got things started with a one out walk. Curiel then walked. Brown singled to left field, scoring Caraway and moving Curiel to third. Curiel was able to come home on a pass ball. Brown moved up to second. That would be all the Tigers could manage. McNeese now led 7-4 after five innings.

Pearson singled up the middle to get things going in the bottom of the sixth. Reaves then walked. Mason Braun drew a base on balls to load the bases with one out. Curiel flied out to left field to score Pearson. The inning ended with McNeese leading, 7-5.

John Pearson blasted a solo homer over the left field wall in the bottom of the eighth. 7-6, McNeese as we headed to the ninth.

LSU got two on with one out, but could make the timely hit needed to complete the comeback.

The Tigers are now, 8-1 on the season. Next up LSU will play a four game weekend with Dartmouth and Northeastern, playing each of them twice. They will open the weekend on Friday, Feb. 27 against Dartmouth at 6;30PM.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Right-hander Cooper Moore worked 5.2 innings Saturday for his second win of the season, and a balanced LSU offense pounded out 12 hits as the top-ranked Tigers defeated Notre Dame, 9-4, in the Live Like Lou Jax Classic at Vystar Ballpark.

LSU improved to 7-0 on the season, while Notre Dame dropped 2-3.

The Tigers return to action at 2 p.m. CT Sunday when they face UCF in the final game of the Live Like Lou Jax Classic in VyStar Ballpark.

Moore (2-0) limited the Irish to three runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings with one walk and six strikeouts. He threw 78 pitches, 62 for strikes.

Three LSU players – designated hitter Cade Arrambide, catcher Omar Serna Jr. and leftfielder Brayden Simpson – produced two RBI in the victory, and righfielder Jake Brown collected four hits and scored three runs.

“I was very proud of the team today,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “It was a good win, and we’re going to get ready to try and win the tournament tomorrow. I think our offensive approach for two days has been great here, and I think we’ve even left some things on the table. That’s how good it’s been, we’ve scored 23 runs, but there is still something out there for us.

“Credit to the hitters, I thought we did a great job with runners in scoring position today. A lot of line drive strokes, guys not trying to do too much and really understanding winning baseball.”

Notre Dame starting pitcher Caden Crowell (0-1) was charged with the loss, as he surrendered five runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings with one walk and four strikeouts.

LSU grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when leftfielder Simpson and third baseman Trent Caraway each delivered RBI doubles.

The Tigers extended the lead to 5-0 with three runs in the third as second baseman Seth Dardar lined an RBI single, Serna Jr. provided a run-scoring single, and Simpson drew a bases-loaded walk.

Arrambide’s two-run homer in the fourth – his second dinger of the season – increased the Tigers’ lead to 7-0.

Notre Dame narrowed the gap to 7-3 win a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth, but LSU responded with two runs in the sixth as shortstop Steven Milam scored from third on a wild pitch and Serna drew a bases-loaded walk.

LSU relievers Ethan Plog, Deven Sheerin and Dax Dathe combined to limit the Irish to one run on one hit over the final 3.1 innings with eight strikeouts.

“Another strong effort by our pitching staff,” Johnson said. “Cooper gave us a great start, and Plog, Sheerin and Dax all have great stuff, and when you can go to a bullpen like that, it gives you a great chance to win.”
