Da Boot Sports 3/28/2025 LSU Sports Communications By: William Franques BATON ROUGE, La. – Behind two solo home runs and outstanding outings from pitchers Athony Eyanson and Casan Evans, fifth-ranked LSU captured the series against Mississippi State with a 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs Friday night in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. After a 2 1/2 hour delay due to inclement weather in the area, LSU secured the series win and improved to 25-3 overall and 6-2 in the SEC, while Mississippi State dropped to 16-11 overall and 1-7 in conference play. The teams return for the series finale at 6 p.m. CT Saturday in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. The game will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and streamed on SEC Network+. “I’m proud of our team; it was a long day for them, obviously, with the delay,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “They kept themselves ready to go, and winning baseball starts and ends on the pitcher’s mound, and we got great performances our of Anthony and Casan tonight.” Eyanson (4-0) earned the win after allowing just one run in his five innings of work. Eyanson finished with 12 strikeouts for his most in a conference game and second most in an outing this season. “Anthony has great competitive character and make-up about him,” Johnson said. “Little things don’t bother him, so he was able to navigate the weather delay situation.” Evans entered in relief and pitched four shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out six. The freshman, who earned his fifth save of the season got out of a jam in the eight with a 2-1 lead, striking out the Bulldog batter with the bases loaded. He then came back in the ninth and worked around a two-out walk to secure the team’s win. “Casan is one of the best pitchers in the country,” Johnson said. “He gave us an incredible performance tonight. He really navigate the lineup; I thought he pitched very smart, because there are a few hitters in that Mississippi State lineup that if you make a mistake, they’re going to tattoo it. He showed his poise, his talent and his competitiveness tonight.” The Tigers struck first in the game with a solo home run by designated hitter Ethan Frey in the second inning. Mississippi State tied the game in the fourth after a passed ball scored Bulldogs’ third baseman Ace Reese. LSU, which has won 13 straight games, improved to 18-1 overall, 1-0 in the SEC, while Missouri dropped to 8-9 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The win streak is the Tigers’ longest since the 2023 squad also won 13 in a row from February 26-March 18. LSU and Missouri resume their weekend series at 6 p.m. CT Saturday in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field in a game that will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and streamed on SEC Network +. Anderson (4-0) worked 6.1 innings, limiting Missouri to three runs on four hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts. “Kade is an ace in the truest sense of the word,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “You don’t have to be a baseball expert to see the quality of pitcher that he is, with the strikes, the change of speeds and the location. Even more, who he is as a person and a competitor with his character, really shines through.” Missouri starter Ian Lohse (0-3) was charged with the loss, as he allowed seven runs on three hits in 3.1 innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Shortstop Jackson Lovich unloaded a two-run homer in the top of the second inning to give Mizzou a 2-0 lead, but LSU responded in the bottom of the frame when catcher Luis Hernandez slugged a two-run dinger, his second of the season. LSU erupted for five runs in the fourth, as the outburst featured Curiel’s bases-loaded triple, an RBI groundout by second baseman Daniel Dickinson and a run-scoring single by pinch hitter Jake Brown. Brown’s two-run double in the sixth extended LSU’s lead to 9-2, and a two-run homer by shortstop Steven Milam – his fifth dinger of the year – highlighted a three-run eighth inning. The eighth inning also featured Brown’s sacrifice fly, marking his fourth RBI of the game. “I’m very proud of our team and our offense,” Johnson said. “It’s easy to see the talented players that we have, but how they play is the separator. They’re doing a really good job, and they’re going to need to continue to do a really good job in order for us to score runs.” Photos Below By: Michael Bacigalupi John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. LSU, which won its 11th straight game, improved to 16-1 on the season, while North Alabama dropped to 3-11. The Tigers’ win streak is their longest since the 2023 squad won 13 in a row from February 26 through March 18. The game will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and streamed on SEC Network +. LSU entered the bottom of the sixth inning holding a 5-2 lead when it exploded for six runs. Designated hitter Derek Curiel drew a bases-loaded walk and second baseman Daniel Dickinson delivered an RBI single before Pearson launched a two-out grand slam, his second homer of the season. The grand slam was the first by an LSU player since third baseman Tommy White unloaded a grand slam versus Kentucky at the 2024 SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala. “We’re 16-1 now and we’re one run away from being 17-0,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “But, the story of our team is the response to that one loss (on Feb. 22 vs. Omaha). The players have been really prepared to play, and have really dominated the competition, and have really won in a lot of different ways with a lot of guys contributing. “We need to continue to prepare at a high level and continue to be excited about what we have ahead.” LSU right-hander Chase Shores (4-0) earned the win on Sunday, allowing two runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings with two walks and four strikeouts. North Alabama starting pitcher Anthony Pingeton (1-2) was charged with the loss, as he surrendered five runs – three earned – on four hits in 4.0 innings with one walk and three strikeouts. The Tigers took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when first baseman Jared Jones blasted a two-run homer – his sixth dinger of the year – before rightfielder Jake Brown lined a run-scoring single and shortstop Steven Milam scored from third base on a double-steal attempt. “I think we had three two-strike hits in that first inning, including Jared’s home run,” Johnson said. “We got off to a good start to give us a little bit of breathing room, and when your pitcher is throwing strikes and not giving up free bases, you’re doing a good job.” Photos Below By: Michael Bacigalupi John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. Pitching and home runs aplenty led to the early finish in the series opener. Sophomore lefty Kade Anderson had a strong start to his evening with two strikeouts in the top of the first, sitting the Lions in order. In the bottom of the frame, LSU could not muster any runs across, stranding runners on first and second. After turning the order over for the first time, LSU threatened in the second inning as Jared “Bear” Jones stepped to the plate with bases loaded and two outs. A first-pitch swing in the at-bat resulted in just a shallow bloop out, stranding three more Tiger runners. Anderson continued his success through three innings. He earned his fifth strikeout of the night to retire South Alabama in the top half. With one out in the third, LSU finally found pay dirt. Josh Pearson blasted a solo home run deep into the Diamond Deck. Steven Milam then reached on a walk before advancing to second on a pitch that got past the Lions’ catcher. Jake Brown delivered an RBI double, putting the Tigers up 2-0. Luis Hernandez earned a single on a line drive to left field, moving Brown to third base. Tanner Reaves stepped to the plate and delivered a massive three-run homer to right field to give LSU a 5-0 advantage. North Alabama would retire Stanfield and Curiel with flyouts to end the inning. Daniel Dickinson wanted in on the scoring action. He earned the Tigers’ third home run of the night with a solo shot to left field, extending the lead to six. With two outs in the fourth, Milam homered to right field to make the score 7-0 before the Lions made a pitching change. In the top of the fifth inning, LSU’s Anderson would give up his first run of the game by way of a home run to left field from UNA’s Alex Wade. Luis Hernandez picked up his first home run of the season for LSU with one deep into left field to begin the bottom of the frame. Reaves followed that up with a double into the right field corner. He would advance to third on a tag up from second base, but LSU would strand him to head to the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, LSU forced another pitching change from the visiting Lions. The Tigers managed to load the bases with no outs before going up 9-1 with a run walked across. Cade Arrambide reached on a fielder’s choice, earning an RBI in the process to make it a nine-run advantage for the Tigers. John Pearson, the younger brother of Josh Pearson, blasted a three-run home run with runners on the corners to open up the LSU lead, 13-1. Kade Anderson’s night was complete after six as Jay Johnson turned to freshman righty Mavrick Rizy in relief. Anderson finished with 11 strikeouts on 92 pitches, giving up just four hits and one earned run. Rizy would give up a couple of baserunners in the top of the seventh, allowing one to score on a SAC fly, but the third out would be delivered. LSU gets the run-rule victory by a final of 13-2.
