Da Boot Sports 3/16/2025 LSU Sports Communications By: William Franques BATON ROUGE, La. – Designated hitter Ethan Frey tied his career high with three hits Sunday, and he drove in a pair of runs as top-ranked LSU recorded a 10-5 win over Missouri in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. LSU, which has won 15 straight games, improved to 20-1 overall and 3-0 in the SEC, while Missouri dropped to 8-11 and 0-3. LSU opened SEC play with a three-game sweep for the first time since 2019, when the Tigers swept Kentucky in Baton Rouge. The Tigers’ 15-game win streak is their longest since the 2017 team won 17 in a row from May 11 through June 17. “Ethan was clutch today, big hits, executed a hit and run,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “I thought he was great, and that’s a guy that wasn’t even in the lineup yesterday.” Frey was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI on Sunday as LSU collected 14 hits, including five doubles and one homer. Rightfielder Jake Brown launched a two-run homer in the first inning – his first dinger of the year – and shortstop Steven Milam contributed two hits and two RBI. Left-hander Conner Ware (3-0) was LSU’s winning pitcher for the second day in a row, as he entered the game in the fourth inning in relief of starter Chase Shores. Ware worked 0.2 inning with no hits, no walks and on strikeout. “Conner Ware coming back on back-to-back days was big, as left-handed heavy as Missouri is,” Johnson said. LSU also received an excellent relief outing from freshman right-hander Mavrick Rizy, who pitched 2.0 innings and allowed one run on no hits with one walk and one strikeout. Right-hander Zac Cowan pitched the final 2.1 innings, limiting Missouri to one run on two hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Missouri starting pitcher Kadden Drew (2-1) was charged with the loss, as he surrendered four runs on four hits in 2.0 innings with one walk and two strikeouts. “In the SEC, you’re playing some better opponents that make the game harder,” Johnson explained. “So, you get challenged, and what’s important is how you respond to those challenges. I thought our team showed up, and that’s my big takeaway from the weekend. If these guys show up in that way, we’ll be in every game that we play.” Photos Below By: Corey Perrillioux Photos Below By: Michael Bacigalupi John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. LSU, which won its 14th straight game, improved to 19-1 overall and 2-0 in the SEC, while Missouri dropped to 8-9 and 0-2. LSU and Missouri conclude their series at 1 p.m. CT Sunday in a game that will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and streamed on SEC Network +. Braswell was 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI, as he produced bunts that scored runs from third base in the second and fourth innings to go along with a run-scoring single in the fifth. “There are a lot of ways to affect winning,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson, “and the plays Michael made tonight both at the plate and at third base ultimately proved to be the difference in the game. He executed a suicide squeeze and a safety squeeze, and he had a big two-out, two-strike hit after a couple of two-strike foul balls.” Left-hander Conner Ware (2-0) earned the relief win, entering the game in the fourth inning and firing 1.1 scoreless frames. Ware allowed no hits and no while recording two strikeouts. Ware followed LSU starter Anthony Eyanson, who pitched the first 3.2 innings. LSU, which has won 13 straight games, improved to 18-1 overall, 1-0 in the SEC, while Missouri dropped to 8-9 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Shortstop Jackson Lovich unloaded a two-run homer in the top of the second inning to give Mizzou a 2-0 lead, but LSU responded in the bottom of the frame when catcher Luis Hernandez slugged a two-run dinger, his second of the season. A first-pitch swing in the at-bat resulted in just a shallow bloop out, stranding three more Tiger runners. Anderson continued his success through three innings. He earned his fifth strikeout of the night to retire South Alabama in the top half. With one out in the third, LSU finally found pay dirt. Josh Pearson blasted a solo home run deep into the Diamond Deck. Steven Milam then reached on a walk before advancing to second on a pitch that got past the Lions’ catcher. The Tigers managed to load the bases with no outs before going up 9-1 with a run walked across. Cade Arrambide reached on a fielder’s choice, earning an RBI in the process to make it a nine-run advantage for the Tigers. John Pearson, the younger brother of Josh Pearson, blasted a three-run home run with runners on the corners to open up the LSU lead, 13-1. The game will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and streamed on SEC Network +. “I think our team has been very tough-minded in how our players have approached each day,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “Today was a great example of that. We had a great, emotional game (Saturday) night (vs. Nebraska), and I wanted to see how they would respond today. I don’t think it could have been better, to be honest with you.” The game was scoreless in the bottom of the second inning when LSU erupted for seven runs, sending 10 hitters to the plate. Shortstop Steven Milam led off the inning with a home run, his second of the season. Centerfielder Chris Stanfield provided an RBI groundout and first baseman Jared Jones lined a two-run single before designated hitter Ethan Frey punctuated the inning with a three-run homer, his second dinger of the year. Sam Houston narrowed the gap to 7-2 in the third, but LSU responded with two more runs on another RBI groundout by Stanfield and a run-scoring single by leftfielder Derek Curiel. The Tigers added two runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Milam and an RBI single by catcher Luis Hernandez, and Curiel provided a run-scoring single in the sixth. LSU starting pitcher Chase Shores (3-0) earned the win, as he worked 5.0 innings and limited Sam Houston to four runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts, firing a career-high 89 pitches. Sam Houston starter Connor Zaruba (0-1) was charged with the loss, as he surrendered seven runs on six hits in 1.2 innings with two walks and no strikeouts. LSU’s final five pitchers – Cooper Williams, Connor Benge, DJ Primeaux, Mavrick Rizy and Jaden Noot – combined to throw four shutout innings. Noot was credited with the his first career save by retiring the final two Sam Houston hitters with two runners on base. “Our team is very together,” Johnson said. “Our players are genuinely happy for their teammates’ success. We’re going to continue to get tested, and this weekend was a step in the right direction.” John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." LSU, which won its fifth straight game, improved to 10-1 on the season, while Nebraska dropped to 4-5. The Tigers return to action at 3 p.m. CT Sunday, when they will face Sam Houston in the final game of the Frisco College Classic. The game was originally scheduled to start at 4 p.m., but the start has been moved one hour earlier due to the possibility of inclement weather in the Frisco area. Sunday’s LSU-Sam Houston game will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network, and it will be streamed on D1Baseball.com. Nebraska held a 5-0 lead entering the top of the fourth inning, but LSU scored 10 runs over the next four frames to seize control of the game. Designated hitter Josh Pearson paced the Tigers’ 17-hit attack by going 4-for-5 at the plate with three doubles, one RBI and three runs. Pearson, who delivered the game-winning hit in the Tigers’ 10-inning victory over Kansas State on Friday, tied the LSU single-game record for doubles on Saturday. “We don’t have to totally rely on pitching or totally rely on offense to win games,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “We’re a very well-rounded team with high-character guys, and I’m glad everyone has been able to see that the last couple of days.” LSU starting pitcher Anthony Eyanson (2-0) earned the win after allowing five runs in the first three innings. Eyanson, however, blanked Nebraska over the final three innings of his six-inning outing, and he finished with one walk and seven strikeouts over a season-high 96 pitches. “Anthony began to execute better pitches; his intent led to better conviction, and his pitches seemed sharper,” Johnson said. “He’s obviously in great condition; maybe he’s one of those guys who gets better as the game goes along.” Nebraska reliever Carson Jasa (0-1) was charged with the loss, as he surrendered three runs on three hits in 1.0 inning with one walk and two strikeouts. Facing the five-run deficit in the top of the fourth inning, the Tigers struck for three runs, as shortstop Steven Milam lined a run-scoring double, catcher Cade Arrambide provided an RBI groundout and centerfielder Chris Stanfield delivered an RBI single. LSU added another run in the fifth on a run-scoring single by rightfielder Jake Brown. The Tigers exploded for six runs on six hits in the seventh, as Milam smacked an RBI single to tie the game, and Brown gave LSU the lead with a sacrifice fly. With two outs in the frame, Stanfield, leftfielder Derek Curiel and first baseman Jared Jones lined run-scoring base hits to produce four more runs. LSU relievers Zac Cowan and William Schmidt combined to pitch the final three innings, limiting Nebraska to one run on four hits with one walk and one strikeout.
