ATHENS, Ga. – Designated hitter Daniel Jackson and centerfielder Rylan Lujo combined for nine RBI Sunday, leading fifth-ranked Georgia to a 12-1 win over LSU at Foley Field.

Georgia improved to 41-11 overall, 21-6 in the SEC, while LSU dropped to 29-24 overall and 9-18 in conference play.

The Tigers return to action at 6:30 p.m. CT Thursday when they play host to Florida in Game 1 of a three-game SEC series in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. Thursday’s game will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and streamed on SEC Network +.

“Georgia won the moments in this series,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “They’re going to score, so you’ve got to capitalize against them when you have scoring opportunities on offense.”

Georgia starting pitcher Caden Aoki (8-0) was the winner, limiting LSU to one run on four hits in 5.0 innings with two walks and seven strikeouts.

LSU right-hander Casan Evans (2-3), making his first appearance since April 17 versus Texas A&M, started the game Sunday and was charged with the loss, working 1.2 innings and allowing four runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

“I thought Casan’s stuff looked great, and that’s good for him from a health standpoint,” Johnson said. “He’s a guy that the more he pitches, the better he is, so there might have been a little bit of rust, but I thought he competed fine.”

Georgia struck for four runs in the bottom of the second inning in an outburst highlighted by Jackson’s two-out, two-run single and an RBI single by second baseman Ryan Black.

The Tigers narrowed the gap to 4-1 in the third when designated hitter Omar Serna Jr. delivered an RBI single.

Georgia extended its lead to 7-1 in the fourth as Jackson launched a two-run homer and centerfielder Lujo lined a run-scoring single.

Lujo unloaded a grand slam in the fifth, giving the Bulldogs an 11-1 advantage.

ATHENS, Ga. – Fifth-ranked Georgia struck for eight runs in the second inning Saturday night to take an 8-0 lead, and the Bulldogs went on to post a 13-8 win over LSU at Foley Field.

Georgia improved to 40-11 overall, 20-6 in the SEC, while LSU dropped to 29-23 overall and 9-17 in conference play.

The teams will conclude the series at 2 p.m. CT Sunday in a game that will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and televised on the SEC Network.

“Georgia is the best offense in college baseball,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “They just put together great at-bats; their power is one thing, but the difficulty in striking them out has probably what has impressed me the most.”

Georgia reliever Paul Farley (6-1) earned the win, firing 3.2 scoreless innings with three hits, two walks and three strikeouts.

LSU starting pitcher Marcos Paz (1-3) was charged with the loss, as he allowed seven runs on five hits in 1.1 innings with four walks and one strikeout.

Georgia erupted for eight runs in the bottom of second inning in an outburst highlighted by a grand slam from third baseman Michael O’Shaughnessy and a two-run homer by designated hitter Jordy Oriach.

A three-run double by LSU catcher Cade Arrambide in the top of the third inning narrowed the gap to 8-3.

Georgia, however, scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, extending its advantage to 12-3.

The Tigers scored four runs in the eighth, as leftfielder Chris Stanfield blasted a three-run homer – his third dinger of the season – and second baseball Jack Ruckert provided an RBI groundout.

O’Shaugnessy’s second homer of the game, a solo shot, in the bottom of the eighth increased the Bulldogs’ lead to 13-7.

LSU added a run in the ninth inning when centerfielder Derek Curiel doubled and later scored from third base on a wild pitch.

ATHENS. GA - LSU played well against Georgia, but fell short, 11-8 on Friday night in Athens. The Tigers led for most of the contest, but once again, the LSU bull pen simply couldn't protect the lead. Georgia's explosive offensive hit four home runs in the game.

William Schmidt took the bump for the Bayou Bengals and went four innings, giving up five runs on four hits. He walked five and struck out six. Deven Sheerin (3-2) was charged with the loss.

Mason Braun led off the contest with a single. Omar Serna grounded out to advance Braun to second. Derek Curiel was walked. Cade Arrambide was issued a base on balls to load the bases with only one out. Steven Milam singled to right field, bringing Braun and Curiel home. Georgia would get back into the dugout with LSU leading, 2-0.

Georgia answered in the bottom of the first when Daniel Jackson blasted a solo home run to dead center field. Schmidt began to really struggle, hitting two batters, then walking two in a row, allowing the Bulldogs to plate another run to tie the game at 2-2. We headed to the second inning even at two.

LSU had another productive inning at the plate in the top of the third. Serna led off with a homer over the center field wall. Curiel singled to center field. Arrambide then launched a two run homer to left center field. John Pearson then blasted a solo homer to left field. We moved to the bottom of the frame with LSU now leading, 6-2.

The Bulldogs plated a run to cut the LSU advantage to 6-3 as we headed to the fourth inning.

William Patrick started the fourth inning with a base on balls. Tanner Reaves then singled to right field. Serna was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with only one out. Curiel hit a sacrifice fly to bring a run home. But the one run was all LSU could manage. We headed to the bottom of the fourth inning with the Tigers leading, 7-3.

Georgia added another run in the bottom of the fourth. 7-4, Bayou Bengals as the fourth inning came to an end.

Deven Sheerin replaced Schmidt early in the bottom of the fifth inning and gave up back to back home runs. Kolby branch hit a two run homer to center field, then Ryan Black stepped to the plate and smashed a solo shot to center field. The inning ended with the game in a 7-7 tie.

Tanner Reaves led off the sixth inning with a base on balls. Braun then singled to center field. After a Serna struck out, Curiel singled to right field to load the bases with one out. The Bulldogs were able to turn a questionable double play to end the LSU frame.

The Bulldogs plated a run in the sixth to take an 8-7 lead.

Milam led off the seventh with a base on balls. Pearson grounded out, advancing Milam to second. Milam was then able to move to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Ruckert grounded out, scoring Milam from third. We headed to the bottom of the seventh in an 8-8 tie.

Tre Phelps blasted a three run homer over the left field wall to give Georgia an 11-8 advantage as we moved to the eighth inning.

This was a big game for LSU. The loss increases the pressure on the Tigers to win the next two against the top team in the SEC.

LSU falls to 29-22 overall and 9-16 in the SEC. Next, the Tigers and Dawgs will play game two on Saturday, May 9 at 6:00pm.

BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU senior right-hander Zac Cowan blanked South Carolina through 6.0 innings on Sunday as the Tigers defeated the Gamecocks, 7-0, in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field to complete a sweep of three-game series.

LSU improved to 29-21 overall with its fourth straight victory, and the Tigers moved to 9-15 in the SEC. South Carolina dropped to 22-27 overall and 7-17 in conference play.

The Tigers return to action at 6:30 p.m. CT Tuesday when they play host to Tulane in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. The game will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and streamed on SEC Network +.

“Our players did a great job today, I’m very proud of them,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “We played three baseball games in the span of about 28 hours, and we needed to win these games. The way they played this weekend makes Tuesday’s game important, and they earned the right to have Tuesday’s game matter, and I’m excited about that.”

Cowan (3-3) fired 6.0 shutout innings on Sunday, limiting South Carolina to two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

“Zac is a special player, one of my favorite players that I’ve ever coached in my entire career,” Johnson said. “He’s just a winner; it was an important game today, the team needed him to give everything he had, and he did. He really came through and really simplified the game for us.”

Relievers Santiago Garcia and Gavin Guidry combined to complete the shutout, scattering three hits over the final 3.0 innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

South Carolina starting pitcher Alex Valentin (1-3) was charged with the loss, as he allowed three runs on four hits in 4.0 innings with two walks and six strikeouts.

LSU opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning when designated hitter Omar Serna Jr. launched a two-run homer, his seventh dinger of the season.

LSU added two more runs in the sixth, as the Tigers capitalized on a South Carolina error and Serna Jr. produced a run-scoring groundout.

Second baseman Jack Ruckert’s RBI single in the seventh increased the margin to 7-0.

BATON ROUGE, La. – Freshman right-hander Marcos Paz limited South Carolina to one run through 5.0 innings Saturday night, pacing LSU to a 7-3 win over South Carolina and a sweep of an SEC doubleheader in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

Sophomore right-hander William Schmidt fired 6.0 innings in Game 1 and allowed just one run on five hits, as the Tigers posted a 6-1 victory over the Gamecocks in Saturday’s opener.

LSU improved to 27-21 overall, 8-15 in the SEC, while South Carolina dropped to 22-26 overall and 7-16 in conference play.

The teams conclude the series at 2 p.m. CT Sunday in a game that will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and streamed on SEC Network +.

“These were the best games our team has played this season,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson, “and I’m really proud of our players for playing a really clean brand of baseball with solid fundamentals. We were very team-oriented and reached the standard at which we want to operate.”

Paz (1-2) earned his first career collegiate victory, allowing one run on just one hit in 5.0 innings with three walks and eight strikeouts. Right-hander Deven Sheerin worked the final 4.0 innings – allowing just two unearned runs – to pick up his fourth save of the season.

“Marcos was outstanding today and gave us a tremendous start,” Johnson said. “That’s what is going to happen here for the next three years with him. He’s got his arm back up and re-booted following Tommy John surgery (as a high school senior), and he gave us exactly what we needed today.”

The Tigers collected 13 hits in Game 2, including a two-run homer by first baseman Mason Braun and a solo shot by catcher Cade Arrambide, his 14th dinger of the year.

Arrambide also singled twice and scored three runs, and designated hitter Omar Serna Jr. was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI.

South Carolina starting pitcher Brandon Stone (5-3) was charged with the loss in the nightcap, as he surrendered four runs on six hits in 4.1 innings with one walk and one strikeout.

Schmidt (5-4) pitched brilliantly in Game 1, giving up just one run on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts, firing 97 pitches. Right-hander Grant Fontenot recorded his third save of the season, blanking the Gamecocks over the final 3.0 innings with one hit, no walks and four strikeouts.

“William did a great job today in controlling the count,” Johnson said. “When he got behind, he was able to come back, get some swings, and get some weak contact.”

Arrambide, centerfielder Derek Curiel and shortstop Steven Milam each delivered two RBI to lead the Tigers’ offense in the opening game.

South Carolina starter Amp Phillips (3-6) was charged with the loss after allowing six runs – five earned – on eight hits in 6.0 innings with four walks and three strikeouts.
