Da Boot Sports 6/3/2024 LSU Sports Communications By: William Franques CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina second baseman Alex Madera lined the go-ahead single in the top of the 10th inning as the Tar Heels posted a 4-3 win over LSU in the championship game of the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional. North Carolina, which advances to the NCAA Super Regional this weekend versus West Virginia, is 45-14 this season. LSU completed its season with a 43-23 record. UNC reliever Dalton Pence (4-1) earned the win, as he worked the final 3.2 innings and limited the Tigers to no runs on one hit with two walks and four strikeouts. LSU left-hander Gage Jump (6-2), who entered the game at the start of the ninth inning, was charged with the loss, as he allowed two runs – one earned – on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. “We held the national championship trophy last year,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “I'm equally proud of my team and our program today as I was that day. Where we were in the middle of SEC play to right now epitomizes the character of this team. It is one of the most gratifying coaching years of my entire life. I love these guys. The achievement, the accomplishment – that's obviously what we're here to do. I have a broken heart just simply because I wanted to go to practice on Wednesday.” LSU senior right-hander Will Hellmers entered the game in the second inning and pitched brilliantly, firing 5.2 shutout innings with two hits, two walks and four strikeouts. “This is special right here what Will Hellmers did tonight,” Johnson said. “He is an elite pitcher. Somebody should sign him. If anybody in professional baseball is paying attention, sign Will Hellmers.” “The past four years have meant so much to me,” Hellmers said. “Going out like that, obviously nobody wants to walk away with tears in their eyes and a broken heart. It means a lot to me to just give us a chance in those five innings I threw. That's all I was trying to do, just give us a chance because whoever we turned it over to I had the utmost confidence in.” North Carolina plated two runs in the top of the first inning, as rightfielder Anthony Donofrio drew a bases-loaded walk and a second run scored when designated hitter Alberto Osuna grounded into a double play with the bases loaded. The Tigers narrowed the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the first when third baseman Tommy White singled, advanced to second when first baseman Jared Jones was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on leftfielder Josh Pearson’s groundout. LSU tied the game 2-2 in the third on a solo homer by centerfielder Jake Brown, his fourth dinger of the season. The Tigers took a 3-2 lead in the third when Jones launched his 28th homer of the season. LSU maintained the 3-2 advantage until the top of the ninth inning, when third baseman Gavin Gallaher led off the frame with a double and later scored on shortstop Colby Wilkerson’s single. With two outs and nobody on in the top of the 10th inning, first baseman Johnny Castagnozzi reached second base when his fly ball was misplayed in the outfield. After Gallaher was intentionally walked, Madera slapped a single up the middle, scoring pinch runner Jackson Van De Brake. Pence retired the first two LSU hitters in the bottom of the 10th before Jones reached on a walk and Pearson flied out to center field to end the game. 2024 Chapel Hill Regional All-Tournament Team Catcher - Alex Milazzo, LSU First Base - Jared Jones, LSU Second Base - Steven Milam, LSU Third Base - Gavin Gallaher, UNC (Most Outstanding Player) Shortstop - Michael Braswell III, LSU Left Field - Josh Pearson, LSU Center Field - Andrew Mannelly, Wofford Right Field - Anthony Donofrio, UNC Designated Hitter - Alberto Osuna, UNC Pitcher - Griffin Herring, LSU Pitcher - Dalton Pence, UNC John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. Da Boot Sports 6/2/2024 LSU Sports Communications By: William Franques CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Right-hander Thatcher Hurd worked a season-long 5.2 innings Sunday, and leftfielder Josh Pearson launched a two-run homer as LSU defeated North Carolina, 8-4, in the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional at Boshamer Stadium. Sunday’s LSU win forced a rematch between the Tigers and North Carolina at 5 p.m. CT/6 p.m. ET Monday to determine the regional champion. The television network for the championship game will be determined by Monday morning. The game will be broadcast on affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network, and it can be head on the LSU Sports Mobile App and at www.LSUsports.net. Earlier on Sunday, LSU posted a 13-6 win over Wofford in an elimination game. LSU is now 43-22 on the year, while North Carolina, the NCAA Tournament No. 4 National Seed, is 44-14. Wofford ended its season with a 42-20 record. Hurd (3-4) pitched a season-high 5.2 innings on Sunday, limiting North Carolina to two runs on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts. “Talent and experience wins,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “Our players have talent, they’re experienced. We’ve been in games like that today and have come through and when that happens, our players should draw a lot of confidence from that. I have confidence in them, just like I had confidence in giving the ball to Thatcher tonight. “North Carolina is an elite team, so you’ve just got keep playing. You just have to keep playing. I have a saying that everything is training for something. We’re trained and ready for tomorrow.” Relievers Justin Loer, Fidel Ulloa, Kade Anderson and Gavin Guidry followed Hurd and combined to allow two runs on three hits over the final 3.1 innings with seven strikeouts. North Carolina starter Aidan Haugh (4-2) was charged with the loss, as he surrendered four runs on five hits in 3.0 innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Pearson’s two-run homer – his eighth dinger of the year -- against Haugh in the bottom of the first inning gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead. LSU stretched the margin to 3-0 in the third when shortstop Michael Braswell III provided a two-out RBI single. The Tar Heels narrowed the gap to 3-1 in the top of the fourth when first baseman Parks Harber doubled and scored on an RBI single by rightfielder Anthony Donofrio. LSU struck for four runs in the bottom of the fourth as third baseman Tommy White lined an RBI single, second baseman Steven Milam smacked a two-run single, and the final run of the frame scored on Pearson’s double-play groundout with the bases loaded. The Tigers increased the margin to 8-1 in the fifth on a solo shot by designated hitter Hayden Travinski, his 16th homer of the season. North Carolina scored a run in the sixth and two in the seventh, and the Tar Heels loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but Guidry struck out catcher Luke Stevenson and retired third baseman Gavin Gallaher on a fly ball to left field to end the game. LSU pounded out 21 hits in the win over Wofford, as the Tigers rebounded from a 5-0 first-inning deficit. Pearson was 3-for-4 in the game with a homer, two doubles and four RBI to pace the Tigers’ offense. LSU reliever Griffin Herring (6-1) earned the win, limiting the Terriers to one run on five hits in 6.1 innings with no walks and seven strikeouts. Da Boot Sports 6/1/2024 LSU Sports Communications By: William Franques CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina centerfielder Vance Honeycutt homered twice Saturday to lead the Tar Heels to a 6-2 win over LSU in the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional at Boshamer Stadium. North Carolina improved to 44-13 on the season, while LSU dropped to 41-22. The Tigers will face Wofford at 11 a.m. CT/12 p.m. ET Sunday in a regional elimination game. The winner of the LSU-Wofford game will meet North Carolina at 5 p.m. CT/6 p.m. ET Sunday. If North Carolina wins Sunday’s second game, the Tar Heels are the regional champions. If LSU or Wofford win Sunday’s nightcap, it would face North Carolina again on Monday in a winner-take-all regional championship game at a time to be announced. Honeycutt collected four RBI Saturday with a three-run homer and a solo dinger, increasing his season home run total to 24. North Carolina reliever Ben Peterson (2-2) was credited with the win, as he worked 2.0 innings and allowed two runs on three hits with two walks and one strikeout. LSU starting pitching Luke Holman (9-4) was charged with the loss after limiting North Carolina to four runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings with one walk and 11 strikeouts. Reliever Dalton Pence earned his seventh save of the season, firing 2.2 scoreless innings with no hits, one walk and two strikeouts. North Carolina starting pitcher Shea Sprague pitched 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing four hits with two walks and three strikeouts. “Sprague is tough; he has a good change-up,” LSU coach Jay Johnson said. “One of the better ones I’ve seen in a while, to be honest. I thought we did a great job of making him work. He was out of the game before the fifth inning. We just didn’t capitalize on our opportunities. “It was a good effort by Carolina’s pitching staff tonight. That’s why they’re a good team.” The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Honeycutt launched a three-run home to give the Tar Heels a 3-0 lead. LSU plated two runs in the seventh when first baseman Jared Jones and pinch hitter Ethan Frey each drew bases-loaded walks. Honeycutt, however, homered in the seventh inning to extend North Carolina’s lead to 4-2. The Tar Heels added two runs in the eighth as third baseman Gavin Gallaher lined an RBI single, and second baseman Alex Madera drove in a run with a bases-loaded groundout. “I have complete confidence in our team and their ability to respond positively to adversity,” Johnson said. “I’ve never been so excited to have the chance to play a doubleheader as I am about that opportunity tomorrow.” John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life.
