Da Boot Sports 2/21/2025 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The Tigers return to the diamond on Friday afternoon where they defeated the Omaha Mavericks, 4-2. The big surprise of the contest was how well the Omaha pitching staff kept the LSU hitters guessing and under control, limiting the Bayou Bengals to only four runs on seven hits. Kade Anderson got the start on the bump for the Tigers and went 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits. He walked two and struck out eight. Steven Milam led off the bottom of the second by reaching first on a fielding error by the first baseman. Michael Braswell III walked, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Jake Brown then singled to right field, scoring Milan and advancing Braswell to third. LSU now had runners on the corners with still no outs. Luis Hernandez grounded into a double play, but scored Braswell from third on the play. LSU led 2-0 as we headed to the third inning. Braswell started off the fourth with a walk, but was picked off at first. Jake Brown doubled to left center field. Hernandez then doubled down the left field line, scoring Brown. After four innings, LSU led, 3-0. Jared Jones led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk. Larson then drew a base on balls. Next, Dickinson laid down a nice sacrifice punt to advance the runners to second and third. Milam flied out to the second baseman, scoring Jones and moving Larson to third. The game would head to the sixth inning with LSU now up, 4-0. The Mavericks’ had their first scoring threat of the day. Anderson walked the leadoff hitter, who advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. The runner, Beck moved up to third on a passed ball. Anderson then walked Babin. Zipay then singled to left field to score Beck and move Babin to second. Omaha now had runners on first and second with only one out. Trout singled to left to load the bases with only one out. Jay Johnson decided to replace Anderson with Connor Benge. A sacrifice fly would plate another run for the Mavericks. Omaha now had runners on first and second with two outs. Benge would get the final out of the inning to send us to the bottom of the sixth with LSU leading, 4-2. Mavrick Rizy entered the game to pitch for the Tigers to start the seventh and would get through the top of the frame with no damage done. In the bottom on the seventh, Jones would hit a one out single, followed by a walk by Larson. Dickinson then flied out to deep right center, advancing Jones to third. Milam walked to load the bases with two outs. But the Tigers couldn’t take advantage, leaving the bases loaded. The score still stood at 4-2, LSU as we headed to the eighth inning. Casan Evans started the eighth inning on the mound for LSU. He faced four hitters, walked one, struck out three. Hernandez would hit a one out double to right field to start the bottom of the eighth. The Tigers left Hernandez stranded, as we headed to the ninth with LSU clinging to a 4-2 lead. Evans got the Mavericks out in order for the 4-2 victory. The Tigers improve to, 5-0 on the season. On Saturday, Feb. 22, LSU will play Omaha in a double header. First game will begin at 12 noon. The second contest is scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm.
