Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The 3rd ranked Tigers started the 2025 baseball season with a 14-0 victory over the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons on Friday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium/Skip Bertman Field. Kade Andersson got the start for LSU and the win, pitching five innings, giving up no runs on four hits. He walked one and struck out eight. Chris Stanfield started things off for the Tigers with a leadoff triple to left field in the bottom of the first. Stanfield was able to come home thanks to an error on Port Wayne's center fielder who dropped a fly ball hit by Jared Jones. Josh Pearson then drew a base on balls. With runners on first and second and one out, Daniel Dickinson singled to left center to clear the bases. Jake Brown then singled to right field, advancing Dickinson to third. Dickinson then scored on a throwing error by the Fort Wayne catcher. Steven Milam singled to the right side of the diamond to score Brown from second. The first inning would come to an end with LSU up, 5-0. Derek Curiel hit a two out single down the third base line. He then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Pearson walked before Dickinson doubled to left field, bringing Curiel and Pearson home. We headed to the third inning with LSU now leading, 7-0. The Mastodons mounted their first threat of the contest as they got back to back singles to start the top of the fourth, but Kade Anderson sat down the next three batters to take us to the bottom of the frame with no damage done. Chris Stanfield led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to left field, followed by a single by Curiel. Both runners would advance on a wild pitch. Pearson was able to bring Stanfield home, grounding out to first. So the Bayou Bengals increased their lead to 8-0 as we headed to the fifth inning. In the fifth, Luis Hernandez was hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, then moved to third on a passed ball. Michael Braswell III doubled to right field to score Hernandez. 9-0 Tigers after five. Freshman Casan Evans replaced Anderson on the bump to start the sixth inning and got the Fort Wayne batters out in order. Jared Jones drew a one out walk in the bottom of the sixth. He was able to advance to second on a wild pitch. Josh Pearson then stepped to the plate and doubled to right field to bring Jones home. Daniel Dickinson singled to left field to bring Ethan Frey home who pinch ran for Pearson. After six innings, LSU held an 11-0 advantage. In the bottom of the seventh John Pearson lined a one out double to right field. Ryan Costello then walked. Jared Jones stepped up next and doubled to right field, scoring Pearson and advancing Costello to third. The inning would end with LSU now up, 12-0. LSU stared the bottom of the eight with Mic Paul knocking a single to center field. He would advance to second on a wild pitch. Mikey Ryan then drew a base on balls. Aston Larson loaded the bases with a walk with only one out. John Pearson drew a walk to bring home a run, keeping the bases loaded. Ryan Costello flied out to right field to bring Paul in from third. LSU added two more runs to the lead. 14-0 Tigers as we headed to the final inning. Cooper Williams took the mound for LSU in the ninth to end the contest, as he struck out the side. LSU starts the season, 1-0. They will play game two of the series on Saturday morning at 11:00 am.
