Da Boot Sports 3/15/2026 By: Terrill J. Weil NASHVILLE, TN - LSU defeated Vanderbilt, 16-9 on Sunday afternoon to avoid the sweep. LSU stepped up with a much better performance on the day, both hitting and pitching. William Schmidt started on the bump for the Tigers, going four innings, giving up three runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out six. Rizy, Garcia, Sheerin and Williams all saw action on the bump for the Tigers. Deven Sheerin (2-0) got the win. LSU jumped out to a quick, early lead. Steven Milam started things off with a lead off walk. Jake Brown was then it by a pitch. Derek Curiel was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Milam was able to score on a passed ball, while the other runners moved up. Cade Arrambide stepped to the plate and doubled to left field, scoring Brown and moving Curiel to third. Seth Dardar grounded out, but Curiel was able to score on the play and Arrambide advanced to third base. Omar Serna hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring Arrambide home. We headed to the bottom of the first with LSU on top, 4-0. The Tigers were able to increase their lead in the second. John Pearson led things off with a walk. Micael Stanfield singled and moved to second on a throwing error that also allowed Pearson to round the bases and score. Milam flied out to move Stanfield to third. Brown then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Stanfield. 6-0, Tigers as we headed to the bottom of the frame. Vanderbilt scored on a solo home run by Mike Mancini. 6-1, LSU as the second inning came to a close. Tommy Goodin led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer for Vandy. Jay Johnson decided to bring in Mavrick Rizy to replace Schmidt after the homer and a walked batter. Rizy gave up three runs on three doubles sending him to the dugout. Santiago Garcia took to the mound next to try and get the final out of the inning with a runner on second. Garcia was able to quickly get LSU back into the dugout. As we headed to the sixth inning, LSU held a 6-5 lead. Goodin hit his second solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 6-6. LSU answered to retake the lead in the top of the seventh. Pearson led off being hit by a pitch. Stanfield singled to third base. Pearson advanced to third on a throwing error on the play. Milam then singled to left field, bringing Pearson home and moving Stanfield to second base. Jake Brown stepped to the plate and homered to deep center field. Curiel then hit a triple to left center. After Arrambide grounded out, Dardar flied out to left field, bringing Curiel home. We headed to the bottom of the seventh with LSU now on top, 11-6. Vanderbilt battled back in the bottom of the frame, as Matt Whitcomb hit a three run homer to left field. We moved to the eighth with LSU leading 11-9. Zach Yorke led off the eighth with a single to center field. John Pearson was issued a base on balls. Yorke and Pearson were able to move up a base on a passed ball. Milam was hit by a pitch. Brown then singled down the left field line, scoring Yorke and Pearson. Milam moved to second on the play. Curiel reached safely on a fielder's choice. Brown was out at second while Milam advanced to third. Arrambide then singled to right field, bringing Milam and Curiel home. Ruckert walked. Serna singled to bring home Arrambide. We headed to the bottom of the eighth with LSU now leading, 16-9. Cooper Williams entered the game in the ninth to try and finish off the Commodores and that he did, taking down the Vandy hitters in order to get the victory. LSU improves to 14-7 overall and 1-2 in the SEC.
