BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU played host to Nicholls State on Monday night at Alex Box Stadium/Skip Bertman Field and came away with a 13-3 ten run rule victory in the seventh inning.

Freshman William Schmidt got the start for LSU on the bump and went 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out three.

Nicholls made some noise in the first inning as they started the game with back to back singles. A fielding error loaded the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly to deep right field scored a run from third. LSU was able to get out of the frame without any more damage done. We headed to the bottom of the first with Nicholls up, 1-0.

The Tigers answered in the bottom of the frame.  With two outs, Jared Jones walked. Josh Pearson was then hit by a pitch. Daniel Dickinson stepped to the plate and single to left field, scoring Jones and moving Pearson to second. Ashton Larson drew a base on balls to load the bases. Cade Arrambide walked to bring in a run. Steven Milam then singled up the middle to bring home two more runs. As the game moved to the second inning, LSU now held a 4-1 lead.

LSU added a run to their lead. After back to back fly outs to start the bottom of the second, Jared Jones blasted a solo home run over the left field wall. 5-1 Tigers as we headed to the third inning.

Nicholls got a threat going in the fifth. Irvin for the Colonels singled to center field. He was able to advance to second, to third and then score on back to back to back wild pitches.  DJ Primeaux would replace the struggling Schmidt to try and finish the top of the fifth. Primeaux would issue a base on balls and give up a single against the first two batters that he faced. But would get the final out to end the threat.

Dickinson led off the bottom of the fifth being hit by a pitch. He then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Arrambide drew a walk. Milam then smashed a three run homer over the left field wall.  With still only one out, Chris Stanfield doubled down the left field line. Curiel singled to bring the speedy Stanfield home. Curiel moved to second on the throw home, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jared Jones singled to center field to bring Curiel home. Jones would then steal second, but would be stranded there as the inning ended with LSU now up, 10-2.

Jaden Noot replaced Primeaux on the mound late in the sixth inning and got the last out of the frame for LSU. He faced three hitters in the top of the seventh, getting one out and walking two, before being replaced with Maverick Rizy with runners on first and second with one out. A run would score for the Colonels before Rizy could get the Tigers back into the dugout. We headed to the bottom of the seventh with LSU up, 10-3.

Stanfield led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to left field. Michael Braswell III followed with a single to left center, sending Stanfield to third. Runners were now on the corners with no outs. Mic Paul then walked to load the bases. Jared Jones hit a ball to very deep center field that was dropped by the Nicholls center fielder. Two runs scored. LSU now had runner on the corners with still no outs. Mikey Ryan reached on a fielder’s choice, setting up runners on the corners with one out. With the ten run rule in effect for the contest, Mic Paul would score the game ending run from third on a wild pitch. LSU took the victory, 13-3.

William Schmidt (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the Bayou Bengals.

The Tigers improve to 7-1. LSU will now travel to Texas where they will play four games in five days, starting with Dallas Baptist on Wednesday at 7:00 pm at Globe Life Field in Arlington. The game will be available on FLOSports network.
