Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU earned a lackluster 4-2 victory over Northwestern State on Tuesday night at Alex Box Stadium/Skip Bertman Field. Zac Cowan got the start on the bump against the Demons and only lasted two innings, giving up one run on three hits with two strike outs. Connor Benge (1-0) recorded the win, while Deven Sheerin got his third save of the season. LSU used eight pitchers on the night. The Demons grabbed the early lead in the top of the second inning, when Mason Wray blasted a solo homer over the left field wall. 1-0 NW State. Brayden Simpson led off the bottom of the third with his first home run of the season, launching the baseball over the center field wall. We headed to the fourth inning all even at 1-1. Northwestern State plated a run in the top of the fifth to retake the lead. 2-1, Demons as we moved to the bottom of the frame. LSU got things going in the fifth. Brayden Simpson reached safely on a throwing error. Derek Curiel singled to right field after Chris Stanfield flied out. Curiel advanced to second and Simpson to third on a wild pitch. Cade Arrambide reach on a fielder's choice and Curiel moved to third as Simpson was thrown out at home. Jake Brown then homered to right center field. As the fifth inning came to an end, LSU now led, 4-2. Deven Sheerin entered the contest in the eight inning to get LSU out of a bases loaded jam, protecting the lead, then finished of the Demons in the ninth for the victory. With the win, LSU improves to 23-15. Next up, the Tigers will host #9 Texas A&M this weekend at the Box.
