Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU run ruled Nicholls in the eighth inning, 12-1 on a walk off homer by John Pearson on Wednesday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium/Skip Bertman Field. Zac Cowan started on the bump for the Bayou Bengals but only went 1.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits, walking one while striking out two. Dax Dathe, Zion Theophilus, Santiago Garcia, Reagan Ricken all made short appearances. Cowan (1-0) got the win, while Ricken registered his first save of the season. LSU had a shaky start as the Colonels plated a run on a solo home run by Nico Rijo-Berger to left field, then loaded the bases before Cowan was able to get the Tigers back into the dugout. 1-0 Nicholls as we moved to the bottom of the frame. Steven Milam got things started with a one out single to right field. Jake Brown then doubled down the left field line, moving Milam to third. Milam was able to come home on a wild pitch to tie the game. Brown moved to third on the play. Zach Yorke walked. Seth Dardar then walked to load the bases with two outs. Trent Caraway stepped to the plate and launched a grand slam to left field. The first inning came to a close with LSU up, 5-1. Cowan was replaced early in the second inning by Dax Dathe after Nicholls put runners on first and second with one out. Dathe did a great job of getting the final two outs with no damage done to end the top of the frame. Mason Braun and Derek Curiel drew back to back walks to start the bottom of the second. Milam grounded out to advance the runners to second and third with one out. Brown grounded out, bringing Braun home and advancing Curiel to third. But Curiel would be stranded as we headed to the third inning with LSU now leading, 6-1. LSU was able to extend their lead in the sixth inning. Tanner Reaves led off with a single to right field. Following back to back outs, Reaves stole second before Milam walked. Brown then singled to center field, scoring Reaves and moving Milam to third. Milam scored on a wild pitch while Brown advances all the way to third on the play. Arrambide and Yorke both walked to load the bases with two outs. But the Tigers would leave the sacks full. We headed to the seventh inning with LSU leading 8-1. LSU added a run in the seventh. Daniel Harden led off by reaching on a throwing error. He then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Reaves then reached on a fielding error by the second baseman. Harden scored on the play. 9-1 Tigers as we moved to the eighth. The Tigers finished off Nicholls in the eighth inning. Brayden Simpson led off with a double to left center. Omar Serna then walked. John Pearson stepped to the plate and homered to left field to end the contest via the ten run rule. LSU improves to 5-0 on the young season. Next up the Tigers travel to Jacksonville, Florida to play in the Jax College Baseball Classic. On Friday, Feb. 20, LSU will play Indiana at 1:00pm CST.
