Weil AUSTIN, TX - LSU returned to play in Austin on Sunday afternoon for the rubber match against the Longhorns and unfortunately fell, 6-2 as Texas takes the series. Chase Shores started on the bump for the Tigers and went only four innings, giving up five runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out three. He is now 4-1 after suffering his first lost of the season. Texas jumped on the board early, plating a run in the bottom of the first, then adding two more in the second. The Longhorns added to their lead in the fourth. Shores issued a two out walk, setting up Max Belyeu at the plate who blasted a deep, monstrous home run over the right field wall. We headed to the fifth inning with Texas now leading, 5-0. Meanwhile, Texas starting pitcher Ruger Riojas was having a very solid day, keeping the LSU bats quiet and under control with five shutout innings. Casan Evans replaced Shores on the mound in the fifth inning and did a great job of getting LSU back into the dug out quickly. LSU would finally get on the board in the sixth. Daniel Dickinson started things off being hit by a pitch. Josh Pearson then reached first on a fielder’s choice as Dickinson was out at second base. Steven Milam doubled down the right field line, advancing Pearson to third. Jake Brown then stepped to the plate and singled to right field to bring Pearson home while moving Milam to third. LSU then tried to execute a double steal. Brown was thrown out at second, but not before Milam successfully crossed the plate. We headed to the bottom of the frame with Texas now up, 5-2. Texas responded with another run. With a runner on first and two outs, Derek Curiel tried to make a running catch in left field, couldn’t make the play, allowing the ball to get by him and roll to the wall. The run scored and Max Belyeu ended up on third base. The Tigers got out of the inning, but now trailed, 6-2 as the game moved to the seventh inning. There would be no comeback as LSU fell to Texas, 6-2. The Tigers fall to 22-3 overall and 4-2 in the SEC. Next up, LSU returns home to Alex Box Stadium to host UL-Lafayette on Tuesday night, March 25 at 6:30 pm before Hosting Mississippi State Thursday, March 27 through Saturday, March 29.
