3/31/2021 By: Jordan Taylor Da Boot Sports BATON ROUGE, LA: The Tigers would return home to Alex Box Stadium with a bad taste in their mouth after being swept by #9 Tennessee this past weekend. But there is no time for LSU to feel sorry for themselves as they would host a talented South Alabama baseball team Tuesday evening. Heading into today's contest LSU sits at 16-8 on the season, while South Alabama is 13-9. LSU would start Will Hellmers as usual for a mid-week contest as the Tigers will look the play well and earn a win before hosting #1 ranked Vanderbilt this weekend. Below is our recap of the Tuesday evening contest between the Tigers & Jaguars. 1st INNING: South Alabama would leave one stranded after a two out walk to go scoreless in the top half.... After back to back walks to begin the inning, LSU would cash in to strike first after a RBI single from Gavin Dugas but would fail to get anything else out of the inning leaving two stranded. 1-0 Tigers.. 2nd INNING: Will Helmers would work quick as he would only see three batters to have a clean scoreless inning. Three up-three down... LSU would have Travinski and Morgan each walk, followed by Stafford getting hit by a pitch to load them up with two outs. Dylan Crews would then step up to bat with a golden opportunity and he would cash in with a swinging bunt. The pitcher would slip fielding the ball that would result in a RBI single. With the bases still loaded, LSU would add to their lead after Dugas would draw a walk. Cade Doughty would send a loud roar into the night after he would hit a base clearing double to extend the Tigers lead to 6-0. Tigers big inning would continue after Beloso would paint the right field line for a RBI double to add another run to make it 7-0. 3rd INNING: Blake Money would enter the game on the mound and would be pure money in the top half of the 3rd, mowing down the Jaguars quickly, involving some stellar defense behind him and even better pitching to keep the lead at 7-0. The Tigers would manage to load the bases again in the bottom of the 3rd, but could only manage to plate one run out of it as they would leave the bases loaded. We would head to the 4th inning with LSU up, 8-0. 4th INNING: The Jaguars go three up three down after Blake Money pitches well in his second inning of work.. After the first two outs were recorded quickly, Hayden Travinski would send one into the night that fell into the Left Field Landing to add to an already big lead. Nothing more for the Tigers as they would go into the 5th inning with a 9-0 lead. 5th INNING: Both teams would go quietly in the 5th inning..... 6th INNING: LSU would bring a no hitter into the 6th inning that South Alabama would eventually end following a single to right field. Tissue would eventually come around to score following a RBI triple by Wilson. The single run would be all the Tigers would allow, as the Tigers would now lead, 9-1. The Tigers would go down quietly in the 6th inning 7th INNING: The Jaguars couldn't get anything going in the top half of the 7th as the lead would remain the same at 9-1 Tigers looked like they were well on there way to having a 1,2,3 inning before they would extend the inning with Thompson coming through with a two out single. Dylan Crews would then add to the lead with a monstrous shot that cleared the left field wall to give the Tigers a 11-1 lead. 8th INNING: Both teams have quick innings going scoreless to send us to the 9th with LSU still leading 11-1. 9th INNING: The Jags would send four hitters up, but the Tigers would end the contest with a 11-1 victory... “I’m just so proud of our guys for coming out tonight and playing a great ball game after a tough weekend,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “They didn’t hang their heads, and they came to the park tonight with a positive attitude. We had a great pregame batting practice, and it carried over into the game. South Alabama has a very good club and a strong tradition, so we knew we would be challenged, and I thought our kids played with great effort and enthusiasm.” Final Score- LSU 11 South Alabama 1 LSU now improves their record to 17-8 on the season as South Alabama falls to 13-10. LSU played well in all three phases tonight, keying the win with offense, defense, and strong pitching. The Tigers would use eight pitchers tonight that all pitched well when called upon. The winning pitcher tonight would be Will Hellmers who improves his record to 5-1 on the season. LSU will now shift gears to prepare for this weekend's three game series with the #1 ranked team in the nation, the Vanderbilt Commodores..
