Da Boot Sports 9/13/2025 By: Jason Watson Jr. BATON ROUGE, LA - In front of a 102,158 Tiger Stadium crowd, the #3 LSU Tigers defended their home field with a defensively sound performance that resulted in a 20-10 victory over the Florida Gators. In a chippy game, LSU avenged its 2024 loss to UF. LSU received the ball after Florida won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. The offense would go three-and-out on their opening drive before things got testy in Tiger Stadium. On Florida’s opening offensive series, LSU star linebacker Whit Weeks was ejected from the remainder of the contest following a questionable targeting penalty, not even five minutes into the first quarter of play. Blake Baker’s defense would go on to hold Florida to a field goal, but not before losing a key player. Dashawn Spears put the Tiger defense on his back on the ensuing Gator drive. After a UF timeout and holding penalty set DJ Lagway back, he threw an errant pass on third and ten that wound up in the arms of Spears for the interception. After another LSU punt, the Florida Gators had seemingly scored the first touchdown of the contest on a busted coverage play. However, the score was called back on a second holding flag against UF. LSU would get the ball back inside of Florida territory, but could only muster a game-tying 47-yard Field goal as the second quarter got underway. LSU would force Florida into a punt, then Garrett Nussmeier and the Tigers’ offense took over. LSU scored on back-to-back possessions after a Zavion Thomas 23-yard touchdown reception capped a 76-yard scoring drive. The play put the Tigers up 10-3. The lead would not last long. DJ Lagway led UF to a touchdown series of their own on the ensuing drive. He would hook up with Aidan Mizell for a 10-yard TD with 3:25 left in the first half. An AJ Haulcy interception with just seconds before the end of the first half would set LSU up with an opportunity for a FGA before the break, and Damian Ramos converted a 45-yard attempt to give the Tigers a 13-10 edge. Following an exchange of punts in the second half, Dashawn Spears decided he wanted to play offense. Florida’s Lagway threw away his third INT of the night and second to Spears, but this one went to the opposite end zone for a 58-yard pick-six. The Tigers would extend their lead to ten points. After a mostly uneventful third quarter, Garrett Nussmeier made a big 65-yard pass to Bauer Sharp as he split the middle seam. After that play…? Everything went downhill. The Tigers fumbled for a loss of 17 yards, then Nuss followed that up by throwing an interception himself. The inability to score points on offense just allowed the Gators to hang in this one, but Lagway’s fourth and fifth INTs of the game to Tamarcus Cooley and DJ Pickett gave the Tigers all of the separation they would need to secure the 20-10 victory.
