Da Boot Sports 3/30/2025 Article Courtesy of Crescent City Sports By: Rene Nadeau The Nussmeiers, father Doug and son Garrett, figure to have a profound impact on the success of their respective teams—Doug, the new Saints’ offensive coordinator, and Garrett, one of the top signal-callers in all of college football at LSU.Doug was a fourth-round draft pick of the New Orleans Saints in 1994, chosen behind Heath Shuler and Trent Dilfer, before spending four seasons with the Black and Gold. It was in New Orleans where he met his future wife, Christie, a Lake Charles native and former New Orleans Saintsation. The 25-year coaching veteran has experienced success at every level of football. He served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the 2012 College Football National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide, was the offensive coordinator for the most recent Super Bowl LIX champion Philadelphia Eagles, and played as a backup quarterback for the British Columbia Lions’ 2000 Grey Cup championship team. He also quarterbacked Idaho to a Division II national title. Now 54 years old, Doug is glad to be back on familiar soil in the Big Easy. “We’re blessed. You never see this happening when you first start out,” Doug Nussmeier reflected on his journey. “In this profession, it’s hard enough just to get a job, let alone getting a job in New Orleans, where it all started. We’ve been blessed.” Even though he wore different hats over the years, he and his family always maintained ties to the Crescent City. “There was always a Fleur-de-lis somewhere in the house,” he laughed. Garrett Nussmeier is now just 80 miles away from his dad’s office, much closer than the 1,127 miles that separated them last season from Philadelphia to Tiger Stadium. “It’s going to be really cool, not just for me and my dad, but for my entire family,” the Lake Charles-born LSU quarterback mused. “My whole life, I’ve always been a Saints fan. Since he’s been in the NFL, I haven’t had the opportunity to really be that,” Garrett continued. “He’s really excited to be with the Saints. I’m excited for him.” The rabid Saints fan base is ecstatic about the arrival of new head coach Kellen Moore and his staff, including Doug Nussmeier. “They’re getting a dog,” Garrett said about his dad’s hiring. “They’re getting a guy who is going to work his tail off. Someone who is not afraid to speak his mind and do what he believes is right. His track record speaks for itself.” The recently turned 23-year-old quarterback takes the same approach as his father, the coach. Both are immersed in their respective tasks. “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. We both have to focus on what we’ve got going on,” Garrett said. “We’re both locked into what we’re supposed to do. I’m that way because of him. It will be awesome whenever we have some free time. My younger sister attends LSU.” Returning to LSU for his senior campaign required much deliberation on Garrett’s part. He was raised to always weigh all options. “I think it was a good decision because it was his decision,” Doug elaborated. “He did it for his own reasons. He spent a lot of time reflecting, thinking, and praying. He felt like the best decision for him to have the type of career he wants was to go back and play at LSU. I’m proud of him for that. It’s an exciting opportunity, and he’s really looking forward to this season.” A strong team bond, the type of offense LSU employs, and the challenge of playing in the SEC all factored into Garrett’s decision. “He loves LSU, that’s one reason,” Doug continued. “He’s always wanted to play at LSU. For him, that’s reason number one—to be there. Some players really want to be where they are. You get the most out of those types of players.” Garrett arrived at LSU as part of the 2021 recruiting class, ranked as the 19th quarterback in his class behind current NFL signal-callers Caleb Williams, J.J. McCarthy, and Drake Maye, as well as future NFL prospects Jackson Dart and Kyle McCord. At Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas, he threw for 8,160 yards, 83 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions, completing 65.8% of his passes. He has competed with Myles Brennan and Jayden Daniels during his time in Tigertown. His father allowed him the freedom to choose his path. “He never forced me to play or love football,” Garrett said. “What he did do was give me an opportunity to create my own connection and love for the game. He allowed me to be around practices. When I was really young, I would sit on his lap and watch game tape with him. He helped me develop this love for the game internally. It speaks to his character.” Saints offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier and head coach Kellen Moore arrived from the Super Bowl champion Eagles after directing the eighth-best offensive unit in the league in 2024. It wasn’t always flashy, but it was effective. However, don’t expect the 2025 Saints to be a mirror image of the Super Bowl champions. The goal is always to maximize the roster’s potential. “Every offense is different,” Doug analyzed. “It depends on your personnel. We are not going to say that we are going to run this type of offense. The offense we ran with the Eagles was different in Dallas, different in Los Angeles, and different in Philly. It will be different here in New Orleans.” Quarterback Doug Nussmeier is one of 37 left-handed throwers in NFL history, five of whom have played for the Saints: Nussmeier, Ken “Snake” Stabler, Bobby Douglass, Mark Brunell, and Tyler Palko. A sixth former NFL southpaw, Kellen Moore, is now the Saints’ head coach. “Players come in all different shapes, sizes, and forms,” Doug said about the individuality of NFL players. “Ultimately, you want someone who can win. You’re looking for guys who are wired the right way and have the ability and capacity to succeed in your offensive system.” Nussmeier has coached some outstanding quarterbacks during his NFL tenure, including Dak Prescott (three-time Pro Bowler), Justin Herbert (one Pro Bowl), and Jalen Hurts (two Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl victory). Former Saints sixth-round pick in 2000, Marc Bulger, bounced around the NFL before gaining his footing in 2006. He became the fastest quarterback in NFL history to reach 1,000 completions while Nussmeier was his quarterbacks coach with the Rams. “Guys come from all parts of the draft and free agency,” he said, as the Saints prepare for the 2025 NFL Draft. “It’s hard to make a roster and be successful. Every player has a different path. It’s not how you get to the NFL—it’s what you do when you get there.” Garrett Nussmeier appears to have a future in the NFL, but his first priority is the upcoming season. He is the leading returning passer in all of college football, having thrown for 4,052 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions last season, completing 64.2% of his passes. He had eight games with 300 or more passing yards, including 409 yards against South Alabama and 405 yards against Texas A&M. He is currently 3,353 yards shy of surpassing Tommy Hodson as LSU’s all-time leading passer. Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels, like Nussmeier, returned for their senior seasons and experienced monumental success, including winning the Heisman Trophy. Garrett is the early Heisman favorite with +900 odds, while Arch Manning trails slightly at +950. “That’s not my focus,” he deflected any talk of personal accolades. “I’m more concerned about helping LSU win a National Championship. That’s the intensity and energy I bring every day. We set the standard for where we expect to be. We’re not afraid to admit it. We expect to be playing football in January next year.” The Nussmeier father-son duo is hoping to lead both the Saints and the Tigers to the pinnacle of success.
