Da Boot Sports 8/31/2024 By: Jason Watson Jr. Las Vegas, NV - Two of college football’s most prestigious programs will battle on the gridiron when the SEC and the Big Ten square off in fabulous Las Vegas. Allegiant Stadium will play host to the top-25 contest over Labor Day Weekend as Louisiana State University and the University of Southern California are eager to begin their 2024 campaign with a victory. Series History: Sunday’s marquee matchup will be just the third all-time meeting between the historic squads. Currently, the series is split at one win apiece with the home team coming out on top each time. USC first defeated LSU 17-12 in a meeting back in 1979. The Tigers followed that up with a 23-3 pouncing of the Trojans in 1984, and just over 30 years to the day, the scale will tilt once again. What a Victory Means (LSU): The Tigers have not had a season-opening victory since their national championship run in 2019. Suffering week-one losses to Mississippi State, UCLA, and Florida State (twice) in consecutive seasons drew questions from skeptics about whether scheduling power five opponents as non-conference games are worth the added risk. Yet, LSU and Brian Kelly have remained adamant about wanting to compete with the best of the best. Kelly will work on reloading the Tiger offense after losing Malik Nabers, Brian Thomas Jr., and Heisman winner, Jayden Daniels, to the first round of the NFL Draft. After having arguably one of the historically worst defensive performances in 2023, defensive coordinator Matt House was replaced with Blake Baker. LSU also added DL coach Bo Davis and secondary coach Corey Raymond, all of whom are no strangers to the Tigers’ coaching staff. LSU fans hope that these additions in coordination with player development will result in a much-improved outing on the opposite side of the ball. In an already loaded Southeastern Conference that added Oklahoma and Texas to its slate this offseason, every opportunity to earn a victory throughout the FBS season is important. LSU would feel a lot better about starting the Garrett Nussmeier era with revamped skill positions and defensive units if they were able to leave Vegas with a 1-0 record and a ranked victory under their belt. What a Victory Means (USC): Lincoln Riley and the Trojans are seeking a rebound season after finishing a dismal 8-5 a season ago. Although they were able to win a bowl game versus Louisville, USC dropped their final three regular season games, all by multiple scores. Riley, like Kelly, is entering his third season as the head coach of his program. He was entrusted to return the Trojans to the powerhouse they once were, and they want to make some headway in that progress this season. Similarly to LSU, the Trojans will be rolling out a revamped coaching staff on the defensive side of the ball. Coordinator D’Anton Lynn took over the reins after the firing of Alex Grinch. USC will now also try to replace their own Heisman-winning quarterback after Caleb Williams was selected by the Chicago Bears with the first overall pick this season. Junior QB, Miller Moss, will step into the starting role. USC is one of four schools realigning to the Big Ten this year. UCLA, Washington, and Oregon join the conference as well. Speculation has circulated about how well they’d be able to handle the increased competition, especially in a larger pool of teams. The upcoming game against LSU is going to be a huge chance for the Trojans to make a statement. If USC can show a competitive fire and hang with an SEC opponent, that would go a long way for their confidence throughout the season, regardless of the final result. Where to Watch Live: LSU v. USC can be seen on Sunday, September 1, 2024, from ABC’s broadcast live from Las Vegas with kickoff slated for 6:30 p.m. CST. Moreau, a former Tigers tight end, has long been regarded among the outstanding voices in the Southeastern Conference as a part of the LSU Sports Radio and Television Network broadcast teams since 1972. He has served as the LSU Football radio color analyst since 1988 and has been on the air for three of LSU’s football national championships. The 2024 season would be Moreau's 47th on the official LSU radio broadcasts, as he was also on the broadcast team from 1972-81. Moreau was an all-American for the Tigers in 1965 and three-time letterwinner from 1963-65. After his collegiate career, he played four seasons in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins. Moreau served as an assistant district attorney, judge, then district attorney in Baton Rouge from 1974 until 2009. “On behalf of all of us at LSU Athletics, we will truly miss having Doug on the air this season and wish him a speedy recovery,” said Clay Harris, LSU Deputy Athletics Director. “We are looking forward to carrying on the tradition of following the action on Saturday Night in Tiger Stadium on the LSU Sports Radio Network. Alongside our flagship station Eagle 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge, affiliates across the region, streaming audio, and satellite radio, LSU Football radio broadcasts can be heard by thousands of Tiger fans across the globe every week.” The on-air radio talent for the 2024 LSU Football season will include Voice of the Tigers Chris Blair, color analyst Jacob Hester and sideline reporter Gordy Rush. Blair, who has called national championships for both LSU Football and LSU Baseball, will begin his ninth season as the play-by-play Voice of the Tigers in 2024-25. Along with football, men’s basketball and baseball play-by-play duties, Blair plays host to The Brian Kelly Show, which airs live from TJ Ribs on Thursdays from 7-8 p.m. CT during the season and the weekly Brian Kelly Press Conference. He won the 2020 National Sports Media Association "Louisiana Sportscaster of the Year" award, and has four times been named College Sports Play-by-Play Award Winner by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association (LSWA). Rush, another former Tiger who played defensive back from 1988-90, will serve his 14th season as sideline reporter on the broadcast. Rush is also the Vice-President/General Manager for Guaranty Media. Among many industry honors, Rush was named a finalist for the 2023 “Legendary Manager of the Year” Marconi Award and the 2013 Louisiana Association of Broadcasters “Broadcaster of the Year.” Hester, a 2007 LSU Football national champion, will join the LSU Sports Radio Network crew as a color analyst in the booth alongside Blair in 2024. Hester was an All-SEC fullback and four-time letterwinner (2004-07) who wore No. 18 for the Tigers during his national championship season. Hester currently hosts “Off the Bench” on 104.5 ESPN in Baton Rouge and “Off Campus” on SiriusXM College Football Radio, and he is a frequent contributor on the SEC Network and SEC Radio. “My first memories of LSU Football are listening to Jim (Hawthorne) and Doug (Moreau) call LSU games when I was 10 years old, growing up in Shreveport,” Hester said. “I’ve always believed a home team radio broadcast is one of the greatest pageantries that we have in college football. It will truly be my honor to be able to sit in the booth and call games for the school I love so much.” LSU’s two-hour pregame show will again be hosted by Hunt Palmer, who is joined in studio by two former Tigers, Marlon Favorite (defensive tackle, 2004-08) and Brandon Taylor (safety, 2008-11). Supporting the on-air talent again in 2024 are spotter Jim Nickel, statistician Patrick Wright, who also serves as the play-by-play voice for LSU softball and LSU’s national championship women’s basketball team. Brian Haldane will return to produce the LSU Football broadcasts, while Stan Catron will serve as radio engineer. The 2024 LSU Football season begins on Sunday, Sept. 1, when the Tigers travel to Las Vegas to face USC. Pregame on the LSU Sports Radio Network starts at 4:30 p.m. CT, with kickoff at 6:30 p.m. CT. LSU kicks off its home slate and "100 Years in Tiger Stadium" on Sept. 7 at 6:30 p.m. CT against Nicholls. The first radio broadcasts of the season will be held during the week leading up to the football season opener, with the Brian Kelly Press Conference presented by Farm Bureau airing live at 11:40 a.m. CT on Monday, and The Brian Kelly Show presented by Our Lady of the Lake Health airing live from TJ Ribs on Acadian from 7-8 p.m. CT on Thursday. The LSU Sports Radio Network has been part of the LSU Athletics community since 1946. The network is now comprised of Guaranty Media flagship station Eagle 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge along with more than 15 terrestrial affiliates in Louisiana and across the southeast, streaming platforms and satellite radio. During the 2023-24 season, the LSU Sports Radio Network broadcast 249 LSU Athletics events, coaches' shows and press conferences for football, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball and softball. Kelly presented the No. 18 and No. 7 jerseys to the four LSU leaders following an evening practice in Tiger Stadium on Thursday. It’s the second consecutive year Campbell, LSU’s All-America left tackle, has been presented the No. 7 jersey. As an offensive lineman, Campbell will continue to wear his original No. 66 jersey which will be accompanied by a No. 7 patch. “The number 18 jersey has great historical significance with our program,” Kelly told the team at midfield in Tiger Stadium. “Matt Mauck was the first to wear it. He came to this program after playing professional baseball and won a national championship wearing the number 18. He epitomized all the intangibles of a teammate – he had all the things we talk about when it comes to great traits. He passed that number on to another great LSU player in Jacob Hester who led his team to another national championship. “Throughout the last 25 years the number 18 has been passed down to a player who brings all those traits of a great teammate. Somebody who has given himself up for the team. A guy you can count on, a guy you want next to you when adversity hits, a guy that’s going to be there when you need him. That’s number 18.” Williams, a two-time LSU graduate and four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, told his teammates after being presented with the number 18 jersey, “I’ve had a long journey, coming here as a walk-on in 2019 and now in my sixth season. Being able to represent LSU with the number 18 jersey means a lot to me. Seeing the number 18s that I have played with over the years and seeing what they meant to the team and what they mean to LSU, I just want to thank coach Kelly and the coaching staff for giving me the opportunity to wear this special number.” Penn was one of the most productive players on LSU’s defense last year with 89 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks and an interception that helped spark the Tigers to a comeback win over Texas A&M. “He (Greg Penn) kept our defense together last year,” Kelly said. “We won 10 games last year and he kept our unit together through some difficult times, because he was about LSU football. He was about, when we brought a transfer in at his position, all he did was work harder. He represents all the principles of being a great teammate and a guy you can count on.” When presenting the number 7 jersey, Kelly told the team, who were all huddled in the middle of the field in Tiger Stadium, “(this number) is about somebody that brings an incredible ability, is from the state and calls Louisiana his home. This number is about a player that brings up others around him. You can’t just be a great player - if it’s just about him - the number 7 jersey doesn’t work. You have to bring others up around him and that’s what these two do. They elevate the play of those around him.” Before Kelly presented Perkins with his jersey, Campbell offered the following about the newest number 7, “he comes to work and sets the tone for us every day on defense. I think he’s the most electrifying player in college football and this year’s he going to show it.” Perkins, also a first-team preseason All-America, has become a game-wrecker for opposing offenses in his first two seasons with the Tigers, tallying 26 tackles for loss, 13 sacks and being credited with nine forced turnovers. It’s what Perkins has done during the offseason and in preseason camp that made him a natural selection for number 7. “He has uplifted the other 10 players on the defensive side of the ball and he’s ready to wear this jersey,” Kelly said. Outside of Billy Cannon’s retired No. 20 jersey, the Nos. 18 and 7 are two of the most iconic LSU football numbers and have been worn by some of the all-time greats in school history. LSU’s No. 18 (since tradition started in 2003) Matt Mauck (2003) Jacob Hester (2004-07) Richard Dickson (2008-09) Richard Murphy (2010) Brandon Taylor (2011) Bennie Logan (2012) Lamin Barrow (2013) Terrence Magee (2014) Tre’Davious White (2015-16) Christian LaCouture (2017) John David Moore (2017) Foster Moreau (2018) K’Lavon Chaisson (2019) Lloyd Cushenberry III (2019) Chris Curry (2020) Damone Clark (2020-21) BJ Ojulari (2022) Mekhi Wingo (2023) Greg Penn (2024) Josh Williams (2024) LSU No. 7 (since tradition started in 2008) Patrick Peterson (2008-10) Tyrann Mathieu (2011) Leonard Fournette (2014-16) DJ Chark (2017) Grant Delpit (2019) Ja’Marr Chase (2020) Derek Stingley Jr. (2021) Kayshon Boutte (2022) Will Campbell (2023, 2024) Harold Perkins (2024) John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The 2024 college football season is right around the corner for the LSU Fighting Tigers. Coming off of a 10-3 season, Brian Kelly begins year three at the helm of the Bayou Bengals. Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels, Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. are now playing in the NFL. But the LSU offense is still loaded with plenty of dangerous weapons. Needless to say, the LSU offense will have a different look in 2024. It's now Garrett Nussmeier's turn to run things after patently waiting for his opportunity. Nussmeier's talent is stellar. He can make all the throws and is versatile enough to tuck the ball and run when necessary. How do you replace Jayden Daniels' 1,134 rushing yards? LSU offensive coordinator Joe Sloan will need to establish a successful running attack. Last season's starter at running back Logan Diggs is gone, but the LSU backfield has a full stable of talent. Josh Williams, Kaleb Jackson, John Emery Jr. and Caden Durham will all see carries. Even after losing Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas LSU is still loaded with great talent at wide receiver. Kyren Lacy is the returning veteran in this group. Chris Hilton Jr. has been turning heads in fall camp and is expected to have a break out year. Liberty transfer CJ Daniels adds depth and speed to the position. Aaron Anderson, Zavion Thomas and Kyle Parker are all very talented. The tight end position has has some phenomenal athletes who will create mismatches against defensive secondaries. Mason Taylor is expected to have a big year. Ka'Morreun Pimpton, Trey'Dez Green and Gi'Vanni Peterson are large, fast and powerful. All can catch and block. The heartbeat of this offense will no doubt be the offensive line. A unit that you could argue may be the best in the nation. It starts with the tackles. Emery Jones Jr. and Will Campbell. Miles Frazier and Garrett Dellinger are the guards. The only newcomer is at center, where redshirt freshman DJ Chester will have big shoes to fill. If this group stays healthy and plays up to their expectations, LSU will once again have one of the top offenses in the country. The biggest question mark on this team is the defense. They have nowhere to go but up after last season's garbage dumpster fire. Watching the LSU defense last season was a painful experience. Brian Kelly has brought in an entire new defensive coaching staff. Blake Baker has the responsibility of returning the roar back into the Tigers' defense. The defensive line will be led by defensive tackle Jacobian Guillory. Wisconsin transfer Gio Paez will lineup next to Guillory. These two should give LSU a huge improvement over last season. Sai'vion Jones and Bradyn Swinson will be the edge rushers. Both have the potential to be game changers. The linebackers will be led by Harold Perkins Jr.. Baker will move Perkins around, allowing him to cause havoc. Greg Penn III will man the middle. The Weeks brothers, Whit and West are the back ups and will see playing time. Da'Shawn Womack will contribute. Major Burns returns and will play the 'Star' position. Look for Burns to become a big playmaker for the Bayou Bengals. The secondary has been a huge concern over the past couple of seasons. Look for major improvement in 2024. Ashton Stamps and Sage Ryan should be the starters at cornerback. Stamps will be the next great DBU star. PJ Woodland, KJ Johnson and Zy Alexander will be huge contributors in the secondary. Jordan Allen and Jardin Gilbert will be the starters at safety. The key to the defense will be pressure on the quarterback and steady, consistent play by the secondary. Special teams is another area that has been a concern under Brian Kelly. LSU's return game has been non-existent. Look for improvement in 2024 with Mississippi State transfer Zavion Thomas to add a spark to the return game. Aaron Anderson and Kyle Parker will see time as return men. The Tigers will have a new punter. Todd Peyton and Blake Ochsendorf have been in a battle for the spot. Kelly may use both during the year. Place kicker Damian Ramos returns. Ramos is a dependable, accurate kicker and is the strength of the special teams unit. The 12th ranked Tigers kickoff the 2024 season on Sunday, September 1, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas against the #23 USC Trojans. Game Time is set for 6:30pm CST and will be televised on ABC. Also, don't forget that Tiger Stadium is celebrating 100 years in 2024. Death Valley will have new improvements and upgrades made that will add to the excitement of the LSU game day experience. The backup quarterback race is still close. It will be interesting to see who earns the spot. The running backs are still looking sharpe. LSU will be determined to establish a strong running attack. Also, watch for a lot of swing passes to the backs out of the back field. The tight end position is loaded. It may be the deepest and most talented group of tight ends that LSU has ever had. Look for Mason Taylor to be featured often, but watch for #88 Ka'Morreun Pimpton and #14 Trey'Dez Green to see the field at times. Count on seeing some multiple tight end formations. Wide receiver Kyle Parker has been making noise while Chris Hilton is out nursing a bruised bone injury. Hilton's injury isn't considered major and he will return next week for game preparation. LSU has been fortunate, avoiding any serious injuries in fall camp up to this point. Only minor type of camp injuries. Hilton's bruised bone, Sage Ryan, Whit Weeks and Miles Frazier are all dealing with minor injuries. All are expected back next week. Word from Brian Kelly today is that there's a bug going through some of the team. Starting center DJ Chester missed practice with the bug while others chose to practice through it. Garrett Nussmeier continues to look sharpe and in control of the offense, while the backup quarterback position still seems to be neck and neck between AJ Swann and Rickie Collins. Chris Hilton left practice with a minor ankle injury. Brain Kelly said it wasn't anything serious. The decision to sit him down was precautionary. The defense continues to show steady improvement. The Tigers will need to remain consistent on that side of the ball to avoid giving up the big play. The linebackers and edge rushers will be this team's strength. Brian Kelly said game prep for USC will begin next week. A huge congratulations to all of the LSU student athletes who received their degrees and graduated. Fantastic job! This season is LSU’s 100th year of football in Tiger Stadium and the school announced a sellout of season tickets with 71,250 being sold for 2024. LSU head coach Brian Kelly used Wednesday’s workout as an opportunity to challenge his team from a mental standpoint as the 12th-ranked Tigers continue to prepare for the season-opener against 23rd-ranked USC on Sept. 1 in Las Vegas. Battling sweltering heat and humidity, LSU used the final three periods of practice to work on goal line situations with the focus on building a mindset on both sides of the ball in that area of the field. “Today was trying to put our guys in stressful situations, both on offense and defense, and being able to handle those with the right balance of emotional control, execution, and smart decisions,” Kelly said. “Offensively, we are going to have to be much more efficient and more balanced. Defensively, we are going to have to be much-improved over last year. More importantly, we are going to have to win close games. We are going to have to be mentally strong late in games and we are going to have that mindset that when things get difficult, we are going to able to overcome and win, in particular on the road. “That’s the kind of day we had today. It was a mindset day. I was happy with a lot of things, but today was a growth day for our football team.” LSU closes out the week with three straight practices. The Tigers will use Sunday as a recovery day before returning to practice on Monday. Kelly said he plans to use the final three practices of the week to see which players can “stack” days as the Tigers continue to get closer to game-week preparation. “We are getting close to moving day, like in golf,” Kelly said. “These guys need to understand that over the next few days we need to see who are the guys who can stack days together. Thursday, Friday and Saturday are kind of moving days for us, we need to see those guys who can stack days together.” John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU returned to the practice field on Tuesday morning as they continue to prepare for the 2024 season. The wide receivers and tight ends continue to look fantastic, making great grabs and big plays. The quarterbacks had a nice day. The running backs were taking snaps in the following order, Josh Williams, then Kaleb Jackson, followed by John Emery Jr., then Caden Durham. Expect the Tigers to begin the season with running back by committee until one of them steps up and separates himself from the crowd. Each one of the backs look capable of carrying the load. The Tigers are in great shape at running back. The defense is practicing like they're on a mission to regain respect. If they can put it together and play some solid, consistent defense the Tigers could be a surprise team in 2024. After practice Whit Weeks, Gio Paez, Emery Jones Jr, and CJ Daniels met with the media. Video of the player's press conference are posted below. 19 days until kickoff!! Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU returned to practice on Saturday morning as they continue to prepare for the 2024 season. After practice LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker met with the media. Garrett Nussmeier continues to look really good. The wide receivers continue to shine. Kyren Lacy, Chris Hilton Jr. and CJ Daniels are looking great. Aaron Anderson looked good making some nice grabs. Kyren Lacy is going to shine in 2024. The running backs are looking strong. John Emery Jr. is still looking impressive as he returns from last season's injury. Kaleb Jackson continues to show off his speed and power. The Tigers defensive line continues to work hard and looks to make improvement every day. Jacobian Guillory without a doubt will be the leader of this unit. The linebacker position will be the strength of this defense. Harold Perkins Jr. and Greg Penn III are looking solid as expected. Perkins is all over the field. The secondary is showing occasional flashes of improvement as they are continuing to battle against the talented LSU receivers. Consistency will be the key. They will need to play more man to man in 2024. The defense is a work in progress. Look for steady improvement as the season goes on. The team worked on 7 on 7 drills, which was won mainly by the offense. The defense responded with a strong performance in 11 on 11 drills. The offense is definitely ahead of the defense right now. Lots of work to be done over the next three weeks. The Tigers will have Sunday off to rest before returning to work on Monday morning. Video of Baker's press conference is posted below.
