   BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU dominated an outmanned South Alabama team in Tiger Stadium to earn a 42-10 victory in front of 102,143 fans. 

   It was perhaps LSU's most complete and consistent performance of the 2024 season, rolling up 667 yards of total offense. 237 yards rushing and 430 yards through the air. 

   Garrett Nussmeier finished the game going 26-39 for a career high 409 yards with two touchdown passes and two interceptions. Nuss also added two rushes for 6 yards with two touchdowns on the ground.

   Caden Durham led the Tigers in rushing with 128 yards on seven carries and a touchdown. Josh Williams finished with 32 yards on five carries with a touchdown. Zavion Thomas had one carry for 26 yards and Kaleb Jackson added 19 yards on seven carries.

   It was another great night for the receiving corp. Aaron Anderson finished with six catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. Kyren Lacy had 107 yards on five grabs. Caden Durham added three catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. Mason Taylor finished with three catches for 43 yards. CJ Daniels contributed three grabs for 40 yards and Zavion Thomas added two catches for 24 yards.

   The defense played their best game of the season, holding an explosive Jaguars offense to 333 total yards on the night. 112 on the ground and 140 yards passing. They registered three sacks and nine tackles for a loss. 
   Greg Penn III led the defense with 14 total tackles, while Whit Weeks finished with nine tackles. Major Burns added 8 tackles on the night and Dashawn Spears had five tackles. It was a solid performance by the LSU defense. 

   
   LSU took the opening kickoff and wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. On the first play of the game, Garrett Nussmeier hit running back Caden Durham out of the backfield and the true freshman outraced the South Alabama defense for a 71 yard touchdown up the near sideline. 7-0 LSU with 14:36 left in the opening quarter. one play, 71 yards in 14 seconds... 

   After a quick three and out, the Jaguars punted the ball back to LSU.

   On first and ten from the LSU 13 yard line, Caden Durham took the handoff and exploded up the middle for an 86 yard run down to the South Alabama one yard line. On the next play, Nussmeier took it in on a quarterback sneak. 14-0 Tigers with 10:47 left in the first quarter. 

   After the LSU defense forced another three and out, the Tiger offense drove down the field, scoring on a 8 yard touchdown run by Caden Durham. 21-0 LSU with 4:45 left in the opening period.

   South Alabama finally got on the scoreboard, driving 44 yards on ten plays, culminating with a 49 yard field goal by Laith Marjan. 21-3, Tigers with 14:15 left in the second quarter.

   LSU answered the Jaguars score, driving 60 yards in five plays. This time it was Garrett Nussmeier taking it into the end zone from five yards out. 28-3, Bayou Bengals. 

​   The Tigers continued to poor it on South Alabama. Nussmeier would hit Aaron Anderson on a 23 yard touchdown to extend the lead to 35-3 with 4:27 left in the first half. The drive covered 69 yards in only four plays. 

   Neither team could produce another score before the break, as LSU held a 35-3 advantage at halftime.


   South Alabama took the second half kickoff and marched right down the field for a score. The Jaguars drove 75 yards in nine plays, scoring on a 27 yard touchdown pass from Gio Lopez to Anthony Eager. 35-10, LSU with 10:17 left in the third quarter.

   LSU responded with a nine play, 75 yard drive, however it ended when Garrett Nussmeier threw an interception at the 8 yard line. Jaden Voisin returned the ball to the Jags' 32 yard line. 

   The Jaguars drove quickly into LSU territory before the Bayou Bengals' defense stood tall and forced a turnover on downs at the one yard line. A very nice goal line stand. 

   The Tigers then drove the final nail into the coffin, driving 99 yards in 12 plays to extend their lead to 42-10 on a four yard touchdown run by Josh Williams with 14:08 left in the contest. 

   With the win the Tigers improve to 4-1 on the season. LSU will have a bye next week before hosting the Ole Miss Rebels in Tiger Stadium on Saturday, October 12. TBA

     BATON ROUGE, LA- LSU defended Tiger Stadium last Saturday in a competitive contest as they picked up their third victory of the season. Although riding some momentum, the Tigers face a test this weekend when the University of South Alabama comes to town. The Sun Belt conference opponent comes to Baton Rouge in hopes of challenging LSU’s defense with one of the most high-powered offensive groups in the entirety of the FBS. 

   Last Week (W3): 

​   The Tigers defeated UCLA for the first time in school history in a tale of two halves. The two played into a tie ballgame at halftime; certainly, closer than most would have expected. However, LSU utilized timely pressures and multiple forced turnovers to pull away late from the Bruins. LSU 34- UCLA 17 

​   South Alabama played their first conference game of the season on the road against Appalachian State. The Jaguars finished the game with 474 yards of total offense, but 320 of those were gained by way of rushing. South Alabama not only dominated the Mountaineers, but they were also very efficient, scoring touchdowns on four of their first five possessions. USA 48- App St. 14 

   Series History: 

​   When LSU hosts South Alabama, it will be the first meeting between the two schools. The Tigers have already played another team this season for the first time in the Nicholls State Colonels. LSU will look to replicate the success and notch another win. LSU head coach Brian Kelly has made it well-known that he has a deep respect and high praises for USA coach, Major Applewhite, and their offensive schemes. 

   Injury Report: 

​   Injuries suck. When it rains, it pours. After already losing Guillory and Emery to season-ending injuries, star linebacker/pass rusher, Harold Perkins, is now out for the remainder of the year after suffering a severe knee injury. Perkins will be draft eligible at the season’s close, but Brian Kelly emphasized in Monday’s press conference that Harold, nor his family, will be making the decision to enter the draft or return to LSU anytime soon. Starting CB Zy Alexander also went down with a concussion versus UCLA; he remains questionable to suit up for Saturday. On a positive note, LSU is
expected to add another weapon on the offensive side as they slowly work wideout Chris Hilton Jr. back into the rotation. 
South Alabama’s QB Gio Lopez came off of an injury last week versus App St., but seemed to be throwing and running the football just fine. Expect a clean bill of health for the Jaguars against LSU. 

Keys to Victory: 

   * Limit the Big Plays 

​   South Alabama had six plays last week that went for 20 yards or longer from the line of scrimmage. Defensively, LSU gave up five of the same type of plays to UCLA in Week 4. The Tigers have done a nice job adjusting throughout games, especially in the second half, but chunk yardage gains continue to plague LSU and put them in bad situations. Keeping pressure on Lopez and plugging gaps in the trenches will be key to coming out on top. 

   * Take Advantage when Defense gets a Stop 

​   LSU may have had their best defensive outing in the effort versus the Bruins last Saturday. The Tigers finished with five sacks, two turnovers, and forced one three-and-out against UCLA. You would think LSU would have dominated with as many chances as they were given, but the offense could only muster six points off of the two turnovers (two field goals.) Find a way to turn those extra possessions into more points versus the Jaguars.

   * Do Not Cruise into the Bye Week 

​   The Tigers have not looked like a Top-15 powerhouse football team in one game they’ve played thus far. Yes, you have multiple three-score victories. Yes, you already have a conference win. Yes, your only loss is to the thirteenth-ranked team in the nation. Still, I have not seen good, consistent, kick-ass football played by any positional group this season to the point where the Tigers should feel they walk over USA and strut into their rest week. South Alabama has nothing to lose coming into Tiger Stadium Saturday night. Brian Kelly and LSU cannot afford to be outcoached or outplayed again versus a lesser opponent. They cannot afford to overlook the Jaguars and stumble before Ole Miss comes to Death Valley in two weeks.

​   Where to Watch: 

   Fans can watch LSU v. South Alabama on the SEC Network when the live broadcast kicks from Baton Rouge at 6:45 p.m. CST. 

   Predictions and Final Thoughts: 

​   LSU has begun to find an identity on the defensive side of the ball with aggressive play, blitzes, and getting opportunistic with the football. This is a good thing, but if it is the way Kelly and his coaching staff want to lean, they will need to fully deep-dive into this style before facing some really good offenses in the SEC. South Alabama put up 87 points two weeks ago versus Northwestern State. 87!! I do not care who you’re up against; putting 87 points on the scoreboard does not just happen without the right coaching and personnel. The Jaguars will be a good test for the Tigers Saturday night. Fans should be excited for some more football in Death Valley, and even more so excited about not having to deal with 100+ degree temperatures throughout the duration of the game. I am expecting a high-scoring affair with the Tigers pulling away during the second half once more. I’ll pick LSU, 52-27.

   BATON ROUGE, LA - BATON ROUGE, LA - Brian Kelly held his first press conference of the South Alabama game week on Monday afternoon.. 

   Bad news of the day was the injury to Harold Perkins Jr. He will miss the rest of the 2024 season with an ACL injury. We wish him a quick and safe recovery.

   Garrett Nussmeier was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week and Bradyn Swinson was named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week. 

   LSU will host South Alabama in Tiger Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 28. Kickoff is set for 6:45pm.

LSU vs. UCLA Game Highlights Below

   BATON ROUGE, LA- New Big Ten member, UCLA, traveled to Baton Rouge for a Saturday afternoon bout versus the Tigers. The Bruins kept things interesting through the first half, but LSU pulled away late, securing a 34-17 victory, improving to 3-1 (1-0) on the year. 
   
​   LSU and Garrett Nussmeier wasted no time driving down the field against a depleted UCLA defense on the game's opening series. A mix of air raid and rushing attack offense catapulted the Tigers into the endzone, taking less than three minutes off the game clock. Nuss flipped a touch pass to Zavion Thomas to cap off the drive with a five-yard touchdown. 

   UCLA’s offense responded in a big way. The Bruins found themselves in less-than-ideal situations numerous times on their first series of the game but converted a third and fourth down attempt to extend the drive. They attacked the LSU defense’s Achilles heel early with big chunk plays. Ethan Garbers found Jack Pedersen for a 20-yard touchdown strike, tying the ballgame at seven apiece. 

   After forcing an LSU turnover on downs near midfield, UCLA drove down the field into Tiger territory before eventually settling for a field goal, taking a 10-7 lead into the second quarter. 

   Brian Kelly and Joe Sloan drew up the perfect play on the ensuing drive, and Nussmeier executed nicely. A long bomb down the UCLA sideline right into the bread basket of wideout Kyle Parker put up another six for LSU. Parker never had to break stride as the pass landed directly in his outreached hands before tumbling forward into the endzone. The score gave the Tigers a 14-10 advantage with 13:57 left in the half. 

   Both teams would exchange possessions ending in punts before Bradyn Swinson wreaked havoc against Garbers. Swinson delivered a big hit against the UCLA quarterback, forcing a fumble, and earning the Tigers an extra possession. 

   LSU would make it all the down to the Bruins’ five-yard line before the red zone offense stalled out yet again in the young season. Damian Ramos would drill a 22-yard chip shot field goal, giving the Tigers three points off the turnover and a 17-10 lead.

   UCLA got the ball back with 3:45 left in the opening half, trailing by seven. On the play following the newly installed two-minute timeout, it seemed as though LSU had forced another fumble and recovered, but upon review, officials found the ball carrier’s knee had touched the ground before losing control of the football; still, UCLA ball. 

   The Bruins took advantage of the second chance they were handed. Garbers fired a 32-yard pass to Kwazi Gilmer down to the LSU three-yard line. Even after a holding penalty setback, Garbers once again gashed the Tiger defense. This time, he hit Logan Loya for an 11-yard touchdown pass, tying things up at 17 just before halftime. 

   
   UCLA began the second half with the football but was quickly forced into a punt. A much-needed stop was rewarded by the LSU offense going on a 14-play, 96-yard drive that took over six and a half minutes of playtime, resulting in a touchdown. Running back Josh Williams was the beneficiary, punching the rock in from two yards out. 

   The Tigers forced another punt from the Bruins after a UCLA fumble caused them to fall outside of field goal range. LSU would reclaim possession at their eight-yard line and move beyond the 30 before the clock ran out in the third quarter. 

   Garrett Nussmeier would cap another methodical drive for the Tigers with a 35-yard touchdown on a catch-and-run with Caden Durham. That would be Nuss’ third touchdown on the day and mark Durham’s third career touchdown overall. LSU led UCLA 31-17 with 11:15 remaining in the game. 

   An interception from Ardin Gilbert on the ensuing UCLA drive followed by a 32-yard Damian Ramos field goal would be all LSU needed to salt away the contest and escape with their third victory. The Tigers earn their first-ever win over the West Coast squad, 34-17. 

   Next week, LSU stays home for a matchup with the University of South Alabama when they bring their high-powered offense into Death Valley. That game can be viewed on the SEC Network as the broadcast kicks off live from Baton Rouge at 6:45 p.m. CST on Saturday, September 28th, 2024. Geaux Tigers!

   BATON ROUGE, LA- The LSU Tigers return home to Baton Rouge following a sloppy performance on the road that nonetheless resulted in a victory. Brian Kelly’s team now sits at 2-1 (1-0), and they’ll look to keep up the momentum of back-to-back wins in a contest against the UCLA Bruins. 


   Last Week (W3): 

​   LSU opened up SEC play on the road facing off against the Gamecocks of South Carolina. In a hostile environment with national television coverage, the Gamecocks looked poised to blowout the visitors, jumping out to a 17-0 advantage early. The Tigers dug deep and battled through adversity to claw back into the game, going blow for blow in Columbia, scoring the game-winning touchdown in the final minutes. LSU escaped a must-win game on top as the Gamecocks missed the game-tying field goal attempt as time expired. LSU 36- South Carolina 33 

​   The Bruins are in their first season of Big Ten play, and they were given a warm welcome to the league in UCLA’s home opener. The Indiana Hoosiers traveled down to California to open up conference play, smashing UCLA. The Bruins are 1-1 (0-1) on the year, and will be in search of a bounce back performance when they travel to Death Valley. UCLA 13- IND 42 

   Series History: 

​   UCLA and LSU have only been pitted against one another on the gridiron once before. The Tigers traveled to Pasadena, California for their season-opening game of the 2021 season. In what would ultimately be the beginning to a disappointing season for the Tigers, the Bruins and former head coach Chip Kelly bested LSU, 38-27. The Bayou Bengals will look to even the all-time series at one win apiece on Saturday. 

   Injury Report:

​   The Tigers have a relatively healthy squad aside from two veterans in John Emery (RB) and Jacobian Guillory (DT) out for the season. Wide receiver Chris Hilton Jr. remains questionable with a nagging ankle injury.

   UCLA is dealing with two key injuries on the defensive side of the ball with Keanu Williams (DL) and Kanye Clark (DB) both questionable for Saturday’s tilt after being injured in last week’s matchup with Indiana. 

   Keys to Victory:

   * Start Fast 

   LSU fell behind against both USC and South Carolina before getting onto the scoreboard. Brian Kelly has got to find a way to light a fire underneath his team because the Tigers cannot keep falling behind in football games and still expect to win. Perhaps Joe Sloan should try to pull a page out of Klint Kubiak’s book, and beat the Bruins to the punch. It would be nothing but beneficial for Garrett Nussmeier and the offense to play while they’re ahead instead of from behind. 

   * Cut Down the Mental Mistakes 

   LSU is averaging over eight penalties per game through three weeks. The Tigers have had ten, seven, and nine calls go against them respectively. You would look at those numbers and think the refs may have a vendetta versus Brian Kelly, but the truth of the matter is that a lot of these penalties are just plain dumb. They are super easy to correct, but the players have got to do a better job at blocking out the distractions. Eight… EIGHT false start penalties including three against Will Campbell… simply inexcusable. 

   * Create Your Own Noise 

   Saturday’s contest versus UCLA will not be your typical night in Death Valley. Instead, kickoff is slated for an early-afternoon time slot. Of course LSU is well-renowned for having one of, if not the best, game day atmosphere and crowd attendances throughout the country. However, that status dips a bit when the home crowd has to get up early and sit in the scorching Louisiana sun with sweat beading on their necks to cheer on the Tigers. The folks will still show up, but give them something to get rowdy about and live up to those expectations. Go make a play, knock the Bruins on their heels, and cover the 24+ point spread that you should win by. 

   * Where to Watch: 

   Fans can find LSU v. UCLA as the game broadcasts live from Tiger Stadium on ABC. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CST. 

   *Predictions and Final Thoughts:

   Through three weeks, it is still a cloudy forecast on the season for the Tigers. They went into a dangerous environment last week and were able to escape with a conference victory. Brian Kelly and the coaching staff still have a lot of areas to improve in before ramping up to the SEC once again, but for now, LSU fans should rejoice in having a winning record and a return home for two weeks before a bye. In a game that the Tigers should come out on top in, I believe the offense will shine against a banged-up UCLA defense. I think controlling the time of possession will be an important factor as giving the Tiger defense opportunities to catch their breath is critical. I will tab the Tigers as the victors in this one, 38-23.

   BATON ROUGE, LA - The Tigers improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in SEC play as they came out of William-Brice Stadium in Columbia with an exciting 36-33 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks this past Saturday. 

   After trailing, 17-0 in a loud, hostile environment, LSU battled back with ten unanswered points, cutting the lead to 17-10 at the 12:19 mark on the 2nd quarter. The contest would go to the halftime break with the Gamecocks holding a 24-16 advantage. South Carolina lost their starting quarterback, LaNorris Sellers to an ankle injury, which was the turning point in the game. With South Carolina's offense becoming basically one dimensional, now needing to depend mainly on their rushing game, LSU was able to take control of the contest. The Tigers outscored the Cocks, 20-9 over the final 30 minutes to come away with a huge road win.


   THE NEGATIVES

   * LSU's slow start. The Tigers can't continue to fall behind early in a game. They will need to start strong and play consistent football for a full 60 minutes in each game ahead. The offense needs to score early and often. No more slow starts.

   * Still struggling to finish off drives deep in opponent's territory. Another failed attempt on 4th down from the goal line and having to settle for two field goals instead of getting the ball into the end zone is a huge concern. This offense must execute better in the red zone.

   * The defense has got to stop committing mental mistakes. Giving up these big plays needs to be addressed. They allowed a 75 yard touchdown run by La Norris Sellers and a 66 yard touchdown run by Raheim Sanders because of players being out of position at the snap. Needs to be corrected. The defensive backs need to start turning their heads and look at the ball while attempting to make a play.

   * Garrett Nussmeier's two poor decisions on his throws that were intercepted and returned for apparent touchdowns. Thankfully South Carolina committed penalties on both plays, allowing LSU to avoid a fatal bullet that likely would have cost them the game. Nuss has been doing a great job of taking care of the football and making great decisions, however, the few reckless throws that he's been lucky enough to get away with needs to stop or it will cost the Tigers dearly at some point. Keep taking care of the football.

   
   THE POSITIVES

   ​* The play of Garrett Nussmeier. Nuss continues to show he is the leader of this team and has control of the offense. He continues to make smart decisions (other than the two bad throws he made that was mentioned above in the negative section.) and great throws with the football. He thrives under pressure. Never gets rattled and spreads the ball around nicely. Nuss went 24-40 for 285 yards with two touchdowns and one interception on Saturday. He also lead another late game winning drive 

   * Cadum Durham. I have been waiting for one of the running backs to step up and single themselves out from the rest of the pack. The true freshman did just that on Saturday. Durham showed great speed, power, vision and desire as he rushed for 98 yards on 11 carries with two impressive touchdown runs. The LSU running game looked much better on Saturday. They finished the game with 132 total rushing yards on 32 carries with three rushing touchdowns against a very good defense. 

   * The play of the defense. The defense made nice strides after a slow start. They did a good job defending the run, other then the two long runs allowed. They put solid pressure on the quarterback. Forcing three turnovers and collecting five sacks. The secondary played well. All of the defense's mistakes are fixable. Once they fix the few issues they are having, expect to see some fine defensive football. They are getting there. Lets hope it's fixed by the Ole Miss game. 

   * The play of Bradyn Swinson. Swinson was a beast on Saturday. He had five tackles, three sacks, a forced fumble and three tackles for a loss. He was awarded the SEC defensive player of the week. 

   * LSU as a team, not giving up. They could have just quit after falling behind 17-0, but this team showed a never give up attitude and played with heart as the fought back. They kept battling and found a way to win the ball game. 

   * The receivers continue to play at a high level. Mason Taylor, Aaron Anderson, Kyren Lacy and CJ Daniels all played well on Saturday. What a solid, talented group of receivers the Tigers have. 


   LSU will host UCLA in Tiger Stadium this Saturday afternoon. This is a very winnable contest for the Tigers, as UCLA seems to be having their troubles so far in 2024. It will be a great opportunity for LSU to make improvements, continue to take steps in the right direction and build their confidence before the meat of their schedule arrives. LSU is a 25.5 point favorite in the game.

   BATON ROUGE, LA - Brian Kelly held his first press conference of the UCLA game week on Monday afternoon.. One of the more popular games on the home schedule, this weekend's contest against the Bruins should have Tiger Stadium rocking... #16 LSU (2-1) is coming off an exciting 36-33 victory on the road against a good South Carolina team. UCLA (1-1) fell to Indiana this past weekend, 42-13.

   In other news, LSU defensive end Bradyn Swinson has been named SEC Defensive Player of the Week.  Swinson recorded a career-best three sacks, forced a fumble and tallied five total tackles in the LSU's 36-33 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks.

   COLUMBIA, SC - LSU hit the road for their first SEC contest of 2024, as they took on a good South Carolina football team in Columbia.

   The Tigers showed poise, heart and a never give up attitude as they battled back for an exciting 36-33 win against the Gamecocks. 

   Trailing 33-29 with 3:46 left in the game, Garrett Nussmeier lead the Tigers on a 8 play, 55 yard touchdown drive, taking the lead for good on a two yard touchdown run by Josh Williams to put LSU up, 36-33 with 1:12 remaining. South Carolina moved into field goal range, but missed a 49 yard attempt on the last play of the contest. 

   Garrett Nussmeier finished the game going, 24-40 for 285 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception.

   The Tigers finally had a solid day running the football, rushing for a total of 132 yards on 32 carries with three rushing scores. True freshman Caden Durham led the team with 98 yards on 11 attempts and 2 touchdown runs. Kaleb Jackson had 27 yards on seven carries. Josh Williams rushed for 20 yards on ten carries and a touchdown and Zavion Thomas had one rush for 12 yards. 

   Mason Taylor led the Tigers in receiving with 58 yards on six catches and a touchdown, Aaron Anderson had a great game catching five balls for 96 yards. Kyren Lacy finished with five catches for 63 yards and a touchdown and CJ Daniels had 53 yards on four catches. 

   The defense struggled in the first half, but stepped up their play over the final 30 minutes. They gave up 398 total yards to the Gamecocks, but made big plays when needed while collecting five sacks and three turnovers, (2 fumbles and an interception).  Whit Weeks led the team with 11 tackles. Bradyn Swinson was a force finishing with five tackles, three sacks and three tackles for loss. Greg Penn III had five tackles, Sai'vion Jones had five tackles and a sack. Ashton Stamps contributed four tackles and Sage Ryan had three tackles and a huge sack, forcing a fumble. 

   
   LSU won the toss and deferred. The Gamecocks took the opening kickoff and quickly went on a 7 play, 75 yard drive in 2:46, culminating with a LaNorris Sellers 4 yard touchdown run. 7-0 Cocks with 12:14 left in the opening quarter. 

   The Tigers were forced to punt the ball back to the home team after a three and out. Zy Alexander then ended the next South Carolina drive with a nice interception in the end zone. 

   The Tigers avoided disaster to start their next possession. Garrett Nussmeier was intercepted by O'Donnell Fortune who raced 25 yards into the end zone for an apparent score. But a personal foul  penalty on the Gamecocks gave the ball back to LSU. However, the Tigers' offense was unable to take advantage of the break, as a sack on 3rd and ten forced a LSU punt. 

   The Cocks increase their lead on a 28 yard field goal by Alex Herrera, after driving 65 yards in 13 plays. 10-0 Carolina with 13:49 left in the first half. 

   With no sign of life by the LSU offense, the Tigers were forced to punt again. South Carolina blocked the punt and returned the ball to the LSU ten yard line.

   Raheim Sanders scored up the middle on the first play of the drive for a 10 yard touchdown. 17-0, Gamecocks at the 12:19 mark of the second quarter.

   LSU finally found a spark, driving 75 yards in eight plays to get on the score board. On 3rd and nine from the Carolina 26 yard line, freshman running back Caden Durham took the hand off the made an incredible run to get into the end zone. 17-7 South Carolina with 8:08 left until the halftime break.

   The LSU defense then came away with their second turnover of the game, when the Tigers' blitz reached the quarterback on 3rd and 12. Sage Ryan hit LaNorris Sellers from behind, forcing a fumble. Harold Perkins Jr. recovered the ball at the Gamecocks' 18 yard  line. 

   LSU had to settle for a Damian Ramos 28 yard field goal to cut the Carolina lead to 17-10 with 4:28 left in the second quarter.

   The Gamecocks answered immediately, as South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers took off up the middle and raced untouched for a 75 yard touchdown on the first play of the drive. 24-10, Cocks with 4:15 left on the clock. 

   The Tigers battled back, driving 75 yards in six plays to get in the end zone on a 12 yard touchdown pass from Nussmeier to Kyren Lacy. The extra point failed due to a bad snap. LSU now found themselves trailing, 24-16 at halftime.


   LSU took the second half kickoff and drove right down the field on a beautiful nine play, 74 yard drive, but turned the ball over on downs at the one yard line. 

   The Tigers began their next drive on the South Carolina 45 yard line, thanks to the defense forcing a quick three and out deep in Gamecocks' territory. LSU then cut the lead to 24-22 on a 9 yard touchdown run by Caden Durham, his second of the game. The two point conversion failed. 

   The Tigers took their first lead of the contest on the first play of the 4th quarter. LSU finished off their 80 yard, ten play drive with a two yard touchdown pass from Nussmeier to a wide open Mason Taylor. 29-24 LSU, with 14:56 left in the game.

   The Tigers didn't have the lead long, as South Carolina answered quickly on a 66 yard touchdown run by Rahiem Sanders. The two point conversion failed and with 13:51 left in the game, South Carolina now held a 30-29 advantage.

   With South Carolina now holding the momentum, the Tigers committed their first turnover of the day. An errant snap by center DJ Chester gave the ball back to the Gamecocks. 

   Carolina was able to extend their lead to 33-29 as they settled for a 42 yard field goal. 33-29, Cocks with 10:34 to go.

   The Tigers came up with another big turnover when Bradyn Swinson caused a fumble and Major Burns recovered the ball on the Carolina 12 yard line. But LSU gave it right back to the Gamecocks when Nussmeier threw an interception in the end zone a few plays later.

   The defense was able to stand tall late, getting the ball back for the offense to set up the game winning drive.. 36-33, Victory for LSU!!! 

   With the win LSU is now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in SEC play. 

   Next up, LSU will return home to Tiger Stadium to play UCLA on Saturday, September, 21. Kickoff time will be announced on Monday morning.

   BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU played their first game in Tiger Stadium of 2024 this past Saturday night. After losing a close game to USC the weekend before, many thought the 46.5 point favorite Bayou Bengals would take their frustrations out on the Nicholls State Colonels in an easy, blowout victory. That wasn't the case. Nicholls State came to play, frustrating the LSU crowd of 100,242 all night long. 

   It looked like the game would go as expected early on as the Tigers got a safety off of a Nicholls' special teams miscue, then a quick touchdown to go up 9-0.

   That's when the Colonels buckled their chin straps and went to work, going on a 13 play, 83 yard drive while eating 7:17 off the clock. The drive culminated with a two yard rushing touchdown by Collin Guggenheim, cutting the score to 9-7. 

   LSU responded with a scoring drive to extend the lead to 16-7, but the Nicholls State offense came right back with another 13 play drive. This time going 75 yards in 7:59. Nicholls head coach Tim Rebowe went to his bag of tricks, putting his Colonels back in the end zone on a lateral, then pass trick play that covered 18 yards. The Tigers now only led 16-14 with 4:18 left in the first half.

   The Tigers answered on a four yard touchdown pass from Garrett Nussmeier to running back Ju'Juan Johnson. The five play, 75 yard scoring drive put LSU up 23-14.  The Tigers would then miss a short field goal on the final play of the half. 

   Nicholls wasted little time scoring to start the second half. After receiving the kickoff, on the second play of the 3rd quarter, running back Colin Guggenheim went right up the middle and out-raced the LSU defense for a 67 yard touchdown. The Tiger Stadium crowd sat in shock as the Tigers now held a slim 23-21 advantage. 

   LSU finally began to step up their play and slowly pulled away from Nicholls the rest of the way, to earn the sloppy 44-21 victory for their first win of the season. 


   THE NEGATIVES

   * LSU's inability to run the football, especially against a much inferior opponent. The Tigers only gained 64 yards on 21 carries on the night. This offensive line just can't run block. It's a complete mystery. 

    * The play of the defense. After showing some improvement against USC in week 1, they resorted
back to 2023 type of play. Little to no pressure on the quarterback. They struggled to stop the run for the first two and a half quarters, giving up 150 yards on the ground and two rushing touchdowns on the night. They looked terrible, allowing the Nicholls State players to believe that they belong on the same field with them. An embarrassing performance. In week one, the defense took a couple of nice steps forward. On this night they took steps backwards. Then to add insult to the situation, the Tigers lost their best defensive lineman, Jacobian Guillory for the season with a torn achilles. 

   * Nothing look right on the night. Just a complete sloppy, poor performance by the Bayou Bengals. They played like they didn't have a heart beat. There simply was no fire or motivation. No consistency.

   
   THE POSITIVES

   * Garrett Nussmeier. Nuss finished the night going 27-37 for 302 yards with six touchdown passes. He did a great job of spreading the ball around to eight different receivers while making smart choices and throwing some very nice and accurate passes. 

   * The play of the receivers. They looked solid in the win, running nice routes and making some fantastic grabs. Kyren Lacy led the team with 5 catches for 65 yards and three touchdowns. Aaron Anderson had a very good game with five catches for 63 yards. Zavion Thomas finished with five catches for 50 yards and a score. C.J. Daniels added 71 yards on 4 grabs and Mason Taylor had 4 catches for 40 yards.

   * The offensive line once again was outstanding in pass protection. Nussmeier had time to throw all night long and was never sacked. 

   * The LSU return game. Needless to say, it's refreshing to see the Tigers finally have a threat at the kick return position. Zavion Thomas has added the spark that LSU has lacked for a very long time. Thomas finished with 114 yards on four kickoff returns. 51 coming on the return after the safety early in the contest. 

   * LSU Punters are doing a solid job. After a good game against USC in Las Vegas, both LSU punters continued to perform nicely. Todd Peyton punted four times for 130 yards. A 43.3 average with a long of 48 yards. Blake Ochsendorf had one attempt for 37 yards. Great job guys. 

   * The Golden Band from TigerLand! The band continues their incredible, perfect performances. From their normal game routine, to the fantastic halftime show, to playing the Alma Mater at the conclusion of the game. The Golden Band from TigerLand is simply the best in the country. 


   This week's game in Columbia, South Carolina is a huge one for LSU. This very well could be a major swing game for the Tigers. If they can show up, play a solid game and come away with a win it could do marvels for LSU's confidence. But a defeat could send this team into a dangerous tail spin. A tail spin that could even jeopardize a successful season. I'm calling this a must win for the purple and gold.
