Da Boot Sports 10/26/2024 By: Terrill J. Weil COLLEGE STATION, TX - What a disappointing night for the Purple & Gold faithful on Saturday night as LSU fell to the Texas A&M Aggies on the road, 38-23. After leading 17-7 at halftime, LSU found themselves out played and out coached in the second half of the game. Garrett Nussmeier played his worse game of the season, going 25-50 for 405 yards with two touchdown passes and three costly interceptions. The LSU running game sputtered terribly, as the Tigers only rushed for 24 yards on 23 carries. Caden Durham finished with 15 yards on 11 carries, while Josh Williams rushed seven times for 23 yards. LSU had zero rushing yards in the second half. Kyren Lacy led the Tigers with five catches for 106 yards. Caden Durham had four catches for 56 yards. Aaron Anderson finished with 126 yards and a touchdown on three catches. Mason Taylor added three grabs for 21 yards and a touchdown. Chris Hilton Jr. finally saw his first game action of the season, catching two passes for 36 yards. The defense played well until Texas A&M head coach Mike Elco decided to replace Aggie quarterback Conner Weigman with dual threat quarterback Marcel Reed. The gamble paid off as the quarterback change sparked the Texas A&M offense. LSU had no answer for Reed, as he rushed for 62 yards and three touchdowns. Texas A&M rushed for 242 total yards with five rushing scores. Bradyn Swinson finished with seven tackles and a sack. Whit Weeks had seven tackles on the night. Greg Penn III had six tackles and a sack. A week after winning the SEC Special Teams Plater of the Week, Damian Ramos missed two field goals and a third attempt failed due to an errant snap. After the game began with back to back punts, LSU got on the scoreboard first. The Tigers drove 86 yards on 11 plays, but had to settle for a 23 yard Damian Ramos field goal after the drive stalled at the Aggies' six yard line. 3-0 LSU with 6:15 left in the first quarter. On A&M's next possession, Le'veon Bell fumbled and Jardin Gilbert recovered the ball for LSU at the Aggies' 36. A personal foul on Texas A&M moved the ball to the 21 yard line. LSU took full advantage of the turnover. Four plays and 21 yards later, the Bayou Bengals took a 10-0 lead when Garrett Nussmeier found Mason Taylor in the end zone for a two yard touchdown. Texas A&M responded with a 9 play, 74 yard drive, scoring on a seven yard touchdown run by Le'veon Bell. 10-7, LSU with only seven seconds left in the opening quarter. LSU began their next possession at their own 20, as we moved to the second quarter and drove 49 yards in ten plays. The Tigers came away empty handed when Damian Ramos missed a 48 yard field goal attempt. LSU was able to extend their lead late in the second quarter when Nussmeier hit Aaron Anderson on a slant route and Anderson outraced the A&M defense for a 76 yard touchdown. 17-7, Tigers with 4:55 left in the first half. Neither teams could manage another score over the final 4:55 of the half. LSU would take a 17-7 lead into the half time break. With 8:17 left in the third quarter, Garrett Nussmeier forced a throw into coverage and it was intercepted by BJ Mays at the LSU 35 who returned the ball to the LSU eight yard line. On the next play, A&M quarterback Marcel Reed took it into the end zone for the score. With 8:10 left in the third quarter, Texas A&M cut the LSU lead to 17-14. LSU then drove 35 yards on nine plays, but blew a scoring opportunity when LSU had an errant snap on a field goal attempt. A&M responded with a seven play, 60 yard drive, taking their first lead of the contest on a eight yard touchdown run by Marcel Reed. 21-17, Aggies with 1:00 left in the third quarter. Nussmeier threw another interception on LSU's next possession, setting up Texas A&M on the Tigers' 26 yard line. Five plays later, Marcel Reed would score his third touchdown of the game on a four yard run. 28-17, Aggies with 14:07 left in the contest. LSU answered with a nine play, 78 yard drive, culminating with a one yard quarterback sneak by Nussmeier for a touchdown. The Tigers failed at a two point conversion attempt. With 9:57 left in the game, A&M now led 28-23. Texas A&M came right back to increase their lead, quickly moving 75 yards in only four plays. Le'Veon Bell scored on a three yard touchdown run, putting the Aggies up, 35-23 with 8:09 left. The meltdown continued on LSU's next possession when Nussmeier threw his third interception of the contest. The Aggies turned the turnover into three points on a 26 yard field Goal by Randy Bond for the game's final margin. With the loss, LSU falls to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in SEC play. Next up, the Tigers will have their second bye week of the season. They will need it to regroup and get ready for their upcoming contest with Alabama at home in Tiger Stadium on November 9th. Da Boot Sports 10/25/2024 By: Jason Watson Jr. COLLEGE STATION, TX- Sole possession of first place in the SEC is up for grabs Saturday when #8 LSU battles #14 Texas A&M on the gridiron. The Week 9 matchup pits the only remaining undefeated in conference opponents against one another in a game that should have big plays galore. College football playoff implications rest heavily on the pendulum that is the final result. Last Week (W8): The Tigers played arguably their best and most complete football of the season last weekend versus the Arkansas Razorbacks. In what many thought would be a potential trap game for 8th-ranked LSU, Brian Kelly’s group rose to the occasion and silenced some doubters with a thumping of the Hogs, on their homecoming of all nights. LSU 34- Arkansas 10 Texas A&M traveled to Starkville for a date with the Mississippi State Bulldogs last Saturday. The Aggies pulled away late in the contest, but never really looked like the lesser of the two teams. The win marked the sixth straight for A&M since losing its opener against Notre Dame. Texas A&M 34- Mississippi State 24 Series History: Although losing the all-time series 36-23-3, Texas A&M suffered defeat in the most recent matchup of Aggies and Tigers. LSU won the 2023 meeting in Baton Rouge by a final score of 42-30. Even though the Tigers have dominated since the Aggies joined SEC play with nine wins to three, the last six years have looked more like a back-and-forth affair. LSU has not had back-to-back victories over A&M since 2016-17. The most memorable game between the two happened back in 2018 in a wild 74-72 shootout that took seven overtime periods to decide before Texas A&M were the victors. Injury Report: LSU’s Chris Hilton Jr. has yet to play in a game this season for the Tigers. Although he has been listed as day-to-day and probable before, he remains questionable to make his debut on the road against the Aggies. Texas A&M is not currently dealing with many injuries for active players on the roster. Keys to Victory: * Do Not Beat Yourself LSU had an astounding seven penalties in the first half alone versus Arkansas. If you thought Razorback Stadium was rowdy and had a factor in the game, certainly a bigger test awaits in Kyle Field. An A&M crowd is almost always raucous, but a big top-15 ranked contest is no doubt going to be rocking. You cannot blame almost double-digit false start penalties solely on crowd noise, so there are plenty of mental mistakes to clean up ahead of Week 9. * Manifest your Destiny The Tigers have an unbelievably good opportunity ahead of them. Georgia knocked Texas down a notch on the SEC totem pole last weekend, leaving A&M and LSU as the lone unbeatens in conference play. With divisions no longer being a factor, the top two teams make the trip to Atlanta for the conference championship week. If the Tigers can somehow escape College Station without an SEC loss, they’d be in outstanding shape to make it that far with just four games remaining. A loss does not completely lock you out, but it makes the path to Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the College Football playoff that much harder. * Protect the Football LSU won the turnover battle at Arkansas 3-0. The Tigers play good football offensively when they take care of the football. While the defense has been good at forcing opposing offenses into hurried mistakes as well as taking advantage of timely opportunistic plays, it will be equally important for the Tigers to be mentally sharp against a stingy Aggie defense. Where to Watch: Fans can watch LSU v. Texas A&M live on ABC or stream from ESPN+ when the game kicks off from Kyle Field at 6:30 p.m. CST on Saturday, October 26, 2024. Predictions and Final Thoughts: This game will be blood pumping, adrenaline rushing, and all-around great football to watch for any fan. LSU and Texas A&M are two programs consistently improving as the season progresses, and I expect to see a clash of those results during Saturday night’s bout. Expect emotional play from both sides. Although the Aggies are favored slightly at home, I’ve got to trust coach Kelly and the Tigers to pull out a must-win in a close affair. I’ll take LSU, 33-27. Weil FAYETTEVILLE, AR. - LSU traveled to Fayetteville, Arkansas where they started fast and finished strong, defeating the Razorbacks, 34-10. Victory for LSU. The Tigers showed up and took care of business, jumping on the Razorbacks early, then cruising to an impressive win on the road. Garrett Nussmeier continued his fine play, going 22-33 for 224 yards. He completed passes to eight different receivers and took care of the football all night long. Caden Durham had a great game, rushing for 101 yards on 21 carries with three touchdowns. Kaleb Jackson added 30 yards on five carries and Josh Williams had five carries for 18 yards. CJ Daniels led the team in receiving with seven catches for 86 yards. Kyren Lacy finished with six catches for 49 yards. Aaron Anderson added three grabs for 36 yards. Mason Taylor had 16 yards on two catches. The defense continues to improve each week. They played fast and physical, holding the Hogs to only 38 yards rushing, while forcing three turnovers and recorded three sacks. Whit Weeks led the defense with 9 tackles, a sack and an interception. Major Burns and Greg Penn III both finished with six tackles each. Sage Ryan finished with five tackles on the night. Damian Ramos had a fantastic game, hitting four field goals from 33, 33, 47 and 48 yards. He was awarded the game ball by Brian Kelly after the contest. The Tigers took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards in eight plays, culminating with a beautiful 22 yard touchdown run by Caden Durham. 7-0, LSU with 10:21 left in the first quarter. Arkansas responded with a 52 yard drive that stalled at the LSU 24 yard line. But Arkansas faulted as Hog's kicker Matthew Shipley missed a 42 yard field goal attempt. LSU would take over at their own 24 yard line with 6:21 left in the opening quarter. The LSU offense extended their lead, driving 60 yards in 14 plays, having to settle for a Damian Ramos 33 yard field goal. 10-0 Tigers with only 38 seconds left in the quarter. On the Hog's next possession, Dubinion Rashod fumbled and Major Burns recovered the ball at the Arkansas 38 yard line. The Tiger were unable to move the football and had to settle for a 48 yard field goal by Damian Ramos. 13-0 with 13:04 left in the second quarter. The Razorbacks finally got on the board, driving 75 yard on nine plays, scoring on a 25 yard touchdown pass from Taylen Green to Andrew Armstrong. 13-7 Tigers at the 8:25 mark of the second quarter. LSU answered with a ten play, 59 yard drive that ended with another Damian Ramos field goal to extend the lead to 16-7. The contest would go scoreless over the final 3:10 seconds of the first half with LSU taking their 16-7 lead into the locker room at the break. The Hogs took the second half kickoff and drove 42 yards in 11 plays before settling for a 51 yard Matthew Shipley field goal. 16-10 LSU with 9:57 left on the clock in the third quarter. LSU then drove into Arkansas territory but the drive stalled as the Tigers ended up moving backwards after committing a string of penalties to kill the drive. Blake Ochsendorf's punt, LSU's only punt of the game, was fair caught at the Razorbacks' 14 yard line. On Arkansas first offensive play of their next possession, Taylen Green was under extreme pressure and had his attempted pass deflected into the air and intercepted by Whit Weeks at the six yard line. Weeks fell forward to the Hog's two yard line to set the LSU offense up with a first and goal. On first and goal from the two, Cade Durham punched it into the end zone. Nussmeier then hit Trey'Dez Green for a two point conversion to extend the lead to 24-10. LSU would take their next possession into the 4th quarter and add to their lead. Damian Ramos would drill a 47 yard field goal, his fourth of the night, to give the Tigers a 27-10 advantage with 11:57 left in the contest. With 10:42 left in the game, LSU took the ball and drove the final nail into the coffin. The Tigers went 80 yards in 14 plays, taking 8:22 off the clock, scoring on a 1 yard touchdown plunge by Caden Durham, his third rushing score of the game. 34-10, Tigers with 2:20 left on the clock. On Arkansas next offensive snap, Javien Taviano forced a fumble. Devon Keys recovered the ball on the Arkansas 35 and returned it to the 27 yard line. LSU would run the clock out to earn their 34-10 victory on the road and keep possession of The Golden Boot Trophy. With the win, the Tigers are now 6-1 overall and 3-0 in SEC play. Next up, LSU will travel to Brian-College Station to take on the Texas A&M Aggies, in a battle between the only two undefeated teams left in the SEC. The Battle for the Golden Boot is a matchup that is always sure to provide fireworks. Saturday’s game will be the second Top-10 ranked opponent that Arkansas hosts in as many weeks. Last Week (W7): LSU made a big time statement against the Ole Miss Rebels in a thrilling final resulting in an overtime win. The Tigers trailed for the duration of the game until taking their first lead on the game-winning touchdown pass from Garrett Nussmeier to Kyren Lacy. With the victory, LSU moved to 5-1 (2-0) on the year. They also jumped from 13th to 8th in national polls. LSU 29- Ole Miss 26 Arkansas is coming off of a bye week after hosted and defeated the fourth-ranked team in the country, Tennessee Volunteers. The Razorbacks stifled the Vols’ high-powered offense en route to a gritty low-scoring affair. Arkansas overcame a 14-3 deficit midway through the second half, and eventually scored the winning touchdown with a little over a minute remaining in the game. Arkansas 19- Tennessee 14 Series History: The Tigers lead the all-time series versus the Razorbacks with a record of 44-23-2. LSU has won the previous two games, but five of the last six contests have finished with a one-score difference. Arkansas’ last victory came in 2021 when they left Baton Rouge with a 16-13 final. Injury Report: Brian Kelly expects LSU to have wideout CJ Daniels back in the lineup on Saturday after he was sorely missed in the short-passing game last week versus the Rebels. As for Chris Hilton, he remains sidelined and has yet to play this season for the Tigers. Another injury worth noting is that of Tyree Adams (OL.) Adams is LSU’s top backup lineman, but went through a surgical procedure recently. The Razorbacks have a nearly spotless injury report. Only two players were listed on the Razorbacks’ most recent availability update. Defensive back Jaylon Braxton and running back Rodney Hill were noted as out and doubtful respectively. Quarterback Taylen Green is expected to play against the Tigers after suffering a knee injury in the matchup with Tennessee. Keys to Victory: * Limit the Turnovers Although capable of showing flashes of greatness, LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier continues to struggle with interceptions. Nuss has thrown at least one INT in four of the Tigers’ six games this season, including two in each of the last two games. Arkansas does not want to get into a shootout with anybody on the field. Their offensive mindset is to drive the football methodically down the throat of the defense, and keep the opposing offenses on the sideline as long as they can. The Tigers can ill afford to give the Razorbacks free possessions if they expect to win Saturday. * Rankings are Not the Full Story Arkansas is not ranked. They’ve already had two losses on the season, but that is not to say the Razorbacks do not have a talented group of players and coaches. Arkansas beat a top-five team two weekends ago, and they’d love nothing more than to beat another ranked opponent this week. Arkansas also played a very talented Oklahoma State team to a one-score loss in OT earlier this season. The Razorbacks should not be taken lightly. They have momentum, but so do the Tigers. LSU is facing a trap game, one that would all but gash any hopes at the CFB playoff this postseason. * Get Arkansas Behind the Chains I spoke on it earlier, and I’ll say it again. Taylen Green and the Razorbacks are going to try moving the football methodically down the field. They want to dominate the time of possession for the best opportunity to knock off the Tigers. If LSU can attack early and force pressure on Green, knocking the offense back on their heels, they stand a good chance at escaping the road test. Blake Baker’s group cannot allow positive yardage gains every down. Where to Watch: Fans can watch LSU v. Arkansas live on ESPN when the game kicks off from Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium at 6:00 p.m. CST on Saturday, October 19, 2024. Predictions and Final Thoughts: Brian Kelly and LSU are well aware of what is at stake in Saturday’s bout with the Razorbacks. Although the Tigers are trending in the right direction, I believe Arkansas can smell a Tiger’s Blood snow-ball on the horizon. I expect a close, tightly-contested game between the rivaled SEC foes, but LSU is too talented to lose this one. I’m not sure I’d narrow this one to just one score like recent matchups allude to. However, LSU will need to pull this one out late. I’ll take the Tigers in this Battle for the Boot, 34-23. Nussmeier earned SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Weeks was tabbed as the league’s defensive player of the week and Swinson the defensive lineman of the week. The honor is the second for Nussmeier this year, while Swinson garnered his third player of the week honor in 2024. Nussmeier, a junior, directed the Tigers on a game-tying drive late in the fourth quarter and then hit Kyren Lacy with a 25-yard TD pass on LSU’s first play in overtime to secure the win over the Rebels. Nussmeier, who leads the SEC in touchdown passes with 18, completed 22-of-51 passes for 337 yards and three TDs in the overtime win. After the Tigers fell behind 23-16 with 3:15 to play, Nussmeier led LSU on a 13-play, 75-yard drive capped with a 23-yard TD pass to Aaron Anderson on fourth-and-5 to tie the game at 23-23. In seven career starts, Nussmeier has led the Tigers to fourth quarter comebacks three times, including a road victory over South Carolina earlier this year and the ReliaQuest Bowl win over Wisconsin. Earlier on that possession, Nussmeier converted a fourth-and-6 situation with a 14-yard completion to Mason Taylor that kept LSU’s chances for the win alive. Nussmeier also rushed for a pair of first downs in the game as LSU overcame a 10-0 deficit to beat Ole Miss for the eighth straight time in Tiger Stadium. Weeks recorded a career-best 18 tackles, including 2.0 tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble, in an inspiring performance that held Ole Miss to only three field goals in the second half and overtime. Ole Miss entered the contest averaging 44.0 points a contest. Weeks’ forced fumble with less than a minute to go in second quarter led to an LSU field goal and pulled the Tigers to within 17-13 at halftime. He also sacked Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart for a 6-yard loss on final play of regulation, sending game to overtime. Swinson also tallied a career-high eight tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss, a pair of sacks, and batted down two passes in the victory. As a unit, LSU sacked Dart six times. The victory propelled LSU up to No. 8 in the national rankings as the Tigers improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in league play. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The stage was set for a huge SEC show down in Tiger Stadium between #9 Ole Miss and #13 LSU. Facing a must win situation, the Tigers made the big plays when needed to pull out an exciting 29-26 overtime victory. Garrett Nussmeier took his lumps in an epic, tough battle, but continues to pull out late game heroics. He finished the game going, 22-51 for 337 yards, with three touchdowns and two interceptions. The running game sputtered against a tough Ole Miss defense. Caden Durham led the team with 37 yards on 12 carries. Josh Williams had nine rushes for 34 yards, while Nussmeier added 16 yards on two rushing attempts. Kyren Lacy had a big night for the purple and gold, catching five balls for 111 yards and the winning score in overtime. Mason Taylor has five catches for 43 yards. Aaron Anderson finished with 81 yards on three catches and a touchdown. Josh Williams had three catches for 43 yards. Caden Durham added three catches for 11 yards. Zavion Thomas finished with 36 yards on two grabs and Trey'Dez Green had a one catch for a 12 yard touchdown. The defense played amazing throughout the night, collecting six sacks while forcing two turnovers, (one fumble and one interception). Whit Weeks led the defense with an amazing 18 tackles and a sack. Greg Penn III finished with 9 tackles. Bradyn Swinson had another great game with 8 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for a loss. Major Burns added 8 tackles with 1.5 sacks. Zy Alexander had a fantastic night, as he made several big plays in the secondary including an interception. Both teams traded punts to start the contest, until Ole Miss mounted the first scoring threat of the evening. The Rebels went 65 yards in 11 plays, but Caden Davis missed a 32 yard field goal attempt, keeping the game scoreless at the 6:54 mark of the opening quarter. The Tigers took over, but Garrett Nussmeier was intercepted when his pass was deflected off of Will Campbell's helmet high into the air and intercepted by Jamarious Brown at the LSU 23 who returned the ball to the Tigers' 13 to set up the Rebels, 1st and ten. The LSU defense stood tall, keeping Ole Miss off the board, stopping them on a 4th and one at the four when Bradyn Swinson tackled Henry Parrish for a one yard loss. After a LSU punt, Ole Miss would drive 51 yards on six plays, settling for a 49 yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter for a 3-0 lead. LSU then moved 34 yards on ten plays to the Ole Miss 38 yard line, where they faced a 4th and two. Brian Kelly decided to go for it. Kaleb Jackson was tackled for a three yard loss, turning the ball over on downs. The Rebels took advantage of the LSU turnover on downs, extending their lead to 10-0 on a 50 yard touchdown run right up the middle on 4th and one by Ulysses Bently. LSU responded with a six play 75 yard drive, culminating with a 12 yard touchdown pass from Garrett Nussmeier to Trey'Dez Green. The Rebels now led, 10-7 with 5:33 left in the first half. Ole Miss then drove 75 yards in 11 plays to extend their lead to 17-7 on a 15 yard touchdown pass from Jaxon Dart to Tre Harris with 1:42 left in the second quarter. The Tigers were able to kick field goals on back to back quick possessions to end the first half, cutting the Rebels' lead to 17-13 at the break. Ramos hit the two field goals from 33 yards and then from 45 yards for the Bayou Bengals. Ole Miss took the second half kickoff but was unable to score, punting the ball to LSU. The Tigers responded with a 54 yard drive in seven plays, but Damian Ramos missed a 46 yard field goal attempt. With 7:17 left in the third quarter, Ole Miss still held a 17-13 advantage. Ole Miss got on the board first in the second half, driving 54 yards in ten plays, kicking a 35 yard field goal to extend their lead to 20-13 with 4:41 left in the third quarter. LSU responded with a 49 yard field goal by Ramos after driving 51 yards in ten plays. With 1:10 left in the third, Ole Miss held a 20-16 lead. Ole Miss answered with a long drive into LSU territory before Jaxson Dart was intercepted by Zy Alexander in the back of the end zone to kill the drive. But Garrett Nussmeier gave it right back to the Rebels, throwing a deep ball on first down that was intercepted by the Ole Miss defense. After a three and out by the Rebels, the Tigers were unable to move the football and punted the ball back to Ole Miss with 6:26 left in the contest. The Rebels drove 54 yards in seven plays and Caden Davis kicked a 37 yard field goal to put Ole Miss up, 23-16 with 3:14 left on the clock. Garrett Nussmeier slowly began driving the Tigers down the field, reaching the Ole Miss 23 yard line where they would face a 4th down and five with only 32 seconds left in the game. Nussmeier hit Aaron Anderson in the end zone for a 23 yard touchdown. Ramos kicked the extra point to tie the game at 23-23 with 27 seconds left. LSU drove 75 yards in 13 plays to tie the ball game, converting two 4th down conversions on the drive. OVERTIME!! Ole Miss got the first offensive possession in the opening overtime period heading towards the South End Zone. The LSU defense stood tall holding Ole Miss to a field goal attempt. Cade Davis hit from 57 yards out to give Ole Miss a 26-23 lead with LSU up next for their possession in the first OT frame. On LSU's first offensive snap of the extra period Garrett Nussmeier fired a rocket into the end zone that Kyren Lacy grabbed for the winning touchdown! The fans charged the field to celebrate the huge victory with their Fighting Tigers on a night that many will remember for a long time. What an epic night in Death Valley! The 102,212 LSU fans showed up in force on Saturday night and made Tiger Stadium a special place. It was loud! It was amazing! Incredible job Tiger fans! I'll end it with, Geaux to Hell Ole Miss! Before the bye, the Tigers played arguably their most complete game of the year against the South Alabama Jaguars. Coach Kelly and his team will look to replicate the success and carry momentum into a tough conference schedule. Last Week (W6): LSU Bye Lane Kiffin, Jaxson Dart, and the Rebels bounced back last week versus the Gamecocks after suffering a defeat at the hands of the Kentucky Wildcats in Week 5. Ole Miss put on a defensive showcase, holding SC to just three points. With the victory, the Rebs moved to 5-1 (1-1) on the year, and moved up in the polls to ninth in the nation. Ole Miss 27- South Carolina 3 Series History: Since 1894, LSU and Ole Miss have battled one another on the gridiron 105 times. Saturday will mark the 106th edition of the historic matchup. Although they were victorious in the first and most recent meetings, Ole Miss actually trails the all-time series versus the Tiger with a record of 38-64-3. In last year’s contest, two offensive powerhouses went blow for blow before Ole Miss would come from behind in the fourth quarter to win 55-49. Injury Report: Outside of season-ending injuries, LSU will roll into some serious SEC play with a mostly healthy roster. Players of note are Caden Durham (RB), Chris Hilton Jr. (WR), CJ Daniels (WR), and Zy Alexander (CB). Even with minor injuries or limited availability, Brian Kelly expects those listed to be active and play versus the Rebels after the open week allowed some extra rehabbing. Ole Miss’ star wideout Tre Harris went down with an injury in the first half of last week’s game versus South Carolina. He was unable to return to the game and his status remains questionable for Saturday’s matchup with LSU. Harris is the Rebels’ leading receiver through the first half of the season; not having him would obviously be a huge blow to the offensive gameplan. Keys to Victory: * Put the Pressure on Dart LSU’s front seven has got to get after Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart if they expect to get off of the field and win this game. Although talented with a clean pocket, Dart has been known to make mistakes and rush his decision-making when under duress. The Tigers have gotten after opposing QBs and will need to cause havoc in the backfield once more with the likes of Bradyn Swinson, Sai’Vion Jones, Ahmad Breaux, and others. * Don’t Turn Away from what Works Ole Miss will try to make Saturday’s contest a high-scoring shootout; Kelly and the coaching staff cannot let that happen. Defense has got to play with a mindset of stopping the next play. The Rebels will make their plays, but LSU has got to make them uncomfortable and attack aggressively with smart decision-making. Look for the playmakers on offense, if it’s Durham, feed him. If it’s Aaron Anderson or Kyren Lacy, feed them. Mason Taylor is big too, get him the rock. Do. Not. Be. Complacent. * Let Your Play do the Talking LSU and Ole Miss are always going to provide some fireworks. Stakes are going to be high on Saturday with college football playoff implications on the horizon. Fans will be rowdy, weather should be perfect for football, and it will have players’ emotions and adrenaline running high. For LSU, they have got to keep their heads in the game, blocking out the outside noise, and just play their game. You’re not going to win a game like this with unsportsmanlike penalties, taunting, false starts, etc. Go out there, make plays, put points on the scoreboard, and come out of the game with another victory. That’s how you talk a big game. Where to Watch: Fans can watch LSU v. Ole Miss live on ABC or ESPN+ when the game kicks off from Baton Rouge at 6:30 p.m. CST. Predictions and Final Thoughts: Saturday’s game has all the potential in the world for LSU to make a statement to the rest of the college football world. The Tigers have been ranked right around the top-15 teams all season, but have yet to get higher than 13th. Defending the home turf and defeating a ninth-ranked Ole Miss squad would go a long way towards boosting LSU’s resume for making the new 12-team playoff at the season’s close. It should be a close, competitive game throughout the evening, but LSU has what it takes to pull it out. I expect a Tigers victory, 34-28.
