Da Boot Sports 10/9/2024 By: Jason Watson Jr. BATON ROUGE, LA- After a Week 6 bye, LSU is back in Tiger Stadium this Saturday for an SEC battle with #9 Ole Miss. Before the bye, the Tigers played arguably their most complete game of the year against the South Alabama Jaguars. Coach Kelly and his team will look to replicate the success and carry momentum into a tough conference schedule. Last Week (W6): LSU Bye Lane Kiffin, Jaxson Dart, and the Rebels bounced back last week versus the Gamecocks after suffering a defeat at the hands of the Kentucky Wildcats in Week 5. Ole Miss put on a defensive showcase, holding SC to just three points. With the victory, the Rebs moved to 5-1 (1-1) on the year, and moved up in the polls to ninth in the nation. Ole Miss 27- South Carolina 3 Series History: Since 1894, LSU and Ole Miss have battled one another on the gridiron 105 times. Saturday will mark the 106th edition of the historic matchup. Although they were victorious in the first and most recent meetings, Ole Miss actually trails the all-time series versus the Tiger with a record of 38-64-3. In last year’s contest, two offensive powerhouses went blow for blow before Ole Miss would come from behind in the fourth quarter to win 55-49. Injury Report: Outside of season-ending injuries, LSU will roll into some serious SEC play with a mostly healthy roster. Players of note are Caden Durham (RB), Chris Hilton Jr. (WR), CJ Daniels (WR), and Zy Alexander (CB). Even with minor injuries or limited availability, Brian Kelly expects those listed to be active and play versus the Rebels after the open week allowed some extra rehabbing. Ole Miss’ star wideout Tre Harris went down with an injury in the first half of last week’s game versus South Carolina. He was unable to return to the game and his status remains questionable for Saturday’s matchup with LSU. Harris is the Rebels’ leading receiver through the first half of the season; not having him would obviously be a huge blow to the offensive gameplan. Keys to Victory: * Put the Pressure on Dart LSU’s front seven has got to get after Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart if they expect to get off of the field and win this game. Although talented with a clean pocket, Dart has been known to make mistakes and rush his decision-making when under duress. The Tigers have gotten after opposing QBs and will need to cause havoc in the backfield once more with the likes of Bradyn Swinson, Sai’Vion Jones, Ahmad Breaux, and others. * Don’t Turn Away from what Works Ole Miss will try to make Saturday’s contest a high-scoring shootout; Kelly and the coaching staff cannot let that happen. Defense has got to play with a mindset of stopping the next play. The Rebels will make their plays, but LSU has got to make them uncomfortable and attack aggressively with smart decision-making. Look for the playmakers on offense, if it’s Durham, feed him. If it’s Aaron Anderson or Kyren Lacy, feed them. Mason Taylor is big too, get him the rock. Do. Not. Be. Complacent. * Let Your Play do the Talking LSU and Ole Miss are always going to provide some fireworks. Stakes are going to be high on Saturday with college football playoff implications on the horizon. Fans will be rowdy, weather should be perfect for football, and it will have players’ emotions and adrenaline running high. For LSU, they have got to keep their heads in the game, blocking out the outside noise, and just play their game. You’re not going to win a game like this with unsportsmanlike penalties, taunting, false starts, etc. Go out there, make plays, put points on the scoreboard, and come out of the game with another victory. That’s how you talk a big game. Where to Watch: Fans can watch LSU v. Ole Miss live on ABC or ESPN+ when the game kicks off from Baton Rouge at 6:30 p.m. CST. Predictions and Final Thoughts: Saturday’s game has all the potential in the world for LSU to make a statement to the rest of the college football world. The Tigers have been ranked right around the top-15 teams all season, but have yet to get higher than 13th. Defending the home turf and defeating a ninth-ranked Ole Miss squad would go a long way towards boosting LSU’s resume for making the new 12-team playoff at the season’s close. It should be a close, competitive game throughout the evening, but LSU has what it takes to pull it out. I expect a Tigers victory, 34-28. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - Week six of the college football season delivered some fun, surprising and fantastic moments for most of us. #1, #4, #9, #10 and #11 all became victims of the upset bug. #11 USC fell to Minnesota, 24-17..... #10 Michigan lost to Washington, 27-17..... #9 Missouri was dominated by Texas A&M, 41-10..... #4 Tennessee was shocked by the Razorbacks in Arkansas, 19-14..... Then the biggest surprise of the day came in Nashville as Vanderbilt defeated #1 ranked Alabama, 40-35. So what do these results mean for our LSU Fighting Tigers? It opens up a huge door of opportunity for the Bayou Bengals who were sitting at #13 with a 4-1 record during their first bye week. Many feel, including myself that next weekend's matchup with the Ole Miss Rebels, Black Bears, LandSharks, whatever the hell they call themselves now, looms large for LSU. Perhaps the biggest game for Brian Kelly in his three year reign as head coach of the purple & gold. Ole Miss (5-1, 1-1) comes to Baton Rouge on Saturday, October 12 for a 6:30pm kickoff after bouncing back from a 20-17 loss at the hands of Kentucky, to solidly defeat South Carolina in Columbia, 27-3. A huge test for the Tigers on Saturday night. Hopefully with Death Valley roaring and rocking, LSU can somehow pull out a tremendous victory, putting themselves in a prime position to qualify for the 12 team playoff by season's end. But, if LSU can find away to defeat Ole Miss, the road ahead still remains a difficult one. It's life in the SEC. I feel like the Tigers will need to go 3-0 over the next three weeks if they want to inch closer to reaching their goal of post-season play. After Ole Miss, the Tigers travel to Arkansas, followed by a trip to College Station to face the Texas A&M Aggies before going into their second bye week of the season. Both Arkansas and A&M are playing really good football right now. Winning on the road in the SEC is a brutal accomplishment if you can escape with a 'W'. LSU is sitting in a good position. Now it's up to the rested Tigers to take advantage of a talented, but beat up Ole Miss team to begin the relentless road ahead. Do the Tigers have it in them? Questions will be answered. Have the Tigers been holding back some of the playbook waiting for this point of the season to begin? How good are the LSU Fighting Tigers? Well, Tiger fans, I think we are about to find out. Hold your breath and enjoy the ride. Make sure you go to DaBootSports.com for all of your LSU, Saints and Southern University coverage all season long. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU won their fourth straight contest, downing the South Alabama Jaguars, 42-10 in Tiger Stadium this past Saturday night. It was perhaps the Tigers' most complete victory of the season. The Tigers started fast, scoring on their first four drives of the game. They would take a commanding 35-3 lead into the locker room at the half, before coasting the rest of the way for the win. LSU continues to show improvement each week. It was refreshing to see them dominate a weaker opponent from beginning to end. THE NEGATIVES * LSU's slow start in the second half. They allowed South Alabama to take the second half kickoff and drive right down the field to score a touchdown. The Tigers were simply flat throughout most of the third quarter as they weren't able to score a point until the 14:08 mark of the fourth quarter. * Garrett Nussmeier's two bad decisions that led to a couple of interceptions. Nuss has done a great job of taking care of the football most of the season, but ended up making two bad throws. The first came with 21 seconds left in the first half. It was just a bad off balance throw into coverage. The second came during the Tigers' first drive of the second half. After driving deep into Jaguars' territory, Nussmeier forced a bad throw that was intercepted at the South Alabama's eight yard line and returned out to the USA 32 yard line to end a scoring opportunity. * Disappointing how early fans decided to leave Tiger Stadium. I know it's their choice, but I wish the stadium would stay full deeper into a contest. These young men are playing hard, showing improvement each week and need to see the fan's support in the stands. Keep it Death Valley late into the game and cheer the Tigers on. THE POSITIVES * Caden Durham and the running game. Durham was explosive until he left the contest with a dislocated big toe. After having the toe popped back in place at halftime, Durham could have returned if needed, but because of the opponent, Kelly decided to sit him the rest of the night. He rushed for an amazing 128 yards on only seven carries and a touchdown, finishing with a 18.3 yards per attempt rushing average. He also had three catches for 89 yards, including a 71 yard receiving touchdown that came on the first play of the game. The Tigers finished the night with 237 total rushing yards with four rushing touchdowns. The running game needs to keep improving as we head into the meat of the schedule. * Garrett Nussmeier finished the night going 26-39 for a career high 409 yards with two touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns. He keeps making great throws and is doing a fantastic job of spreading the ball around, completing passes to 11 different players on Saturday night. * The play of the offensive line. Once again they did a solid job of protecting Nuss and continue to improve on their run blocking each week. * The receivers continue to play at a high level. Each week this group gets the job done. Aaron Anderson and Kyren Lacy each had a big game They are impressive each and every week. * The play of the defense. Everyone was wondering how the defense would respond after losing Harold Perkins Jr. for the season with a bad knee injury. They stepped up and played their best game of the season, limiting an explosive South Alabama offense to 10 points and only 333 total yards. They collected three sacks and finished with nine tackles for a loss. * LSU special teams. Zavion Thomas continues to impress in the return game. The punters continue to perform at a high level. The Tigers have their first of two bye weeks of the season before they host Ole Miss in Tiger Stadium on Saturday, October 12 at 6:30pm. John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life.
