Da Boot Sports 11/30/2024 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The Tigers finished off the 2024 regular season with a convincing 37-17 win over the Oklahoma Sooners in Tiger Stadium on Saturday night. The LSU offense rolled up 395 total yards against the Sooners with a nice balanced attack. Garrett Nussmeier left the game with an injury, but played fantastic after returning. He finished the night going 22-31 for 277 yards with three touchdowns. The Tigers rushed for 110 total yards on the night. Caden Durham rushed for 80 yards on 11 carries, while Josh Williams rushed 13 times for 31 yards. Eight different Tigers caught passes. Josh Williams had five catches for 16 yards. Caden Durham had four grabs for 32 yards. Kyren Lacy caught 3 balls for 41 yards and a touchdown. Mason Taylor added 3 catches for 28 yards. CJ Daniels had 3 grabs for 24 yards. Chris Hilton Jr. finally had hid big game with 2 catches for 85 yards, both grabs went for touchdowns. Ka'Morreun Pimpton had 2 catches for 53 yards and Aaron Anderson had a catch for six yards. The defense was dominating all night long, causing headaches for the Sooners, collecting four sacks and an interception. Whit Weeks led the charge with 15 tackles and a sack. Davhon Keys had 10 tackles and a sack. Greg Penn III added 9 tackles. Jardin Gilbert finished with 8 tackles. The Tigers drew first blood, scoring on a 18 yard touchdown pass from Garrett Nussmeier to a wide open Kyren Lacy. The score ended a seven play, 53 yard drive. 7-0 LSU with 7:09 left in the first quarter. LSU committed the first turnover of the night and it was a costly one. Nussmeier was under pressure after dropping back to throw and had the ball stripped by Gracen Halton. Mason Thomas scooped up the ball and took it nine yards for a Sooners touchdown. 7-7 with 3:26 left on the clock. On LSU's next offensive possession Garrett Nussmeier was injured while being sacked and taken to the locker room forcing backup quarterback AJ Swann into action. Thanks to a beautiful 50 yard run by Caden Durham, the Tigers were able to get on the board again with a 34 yard Damian Ramos field goal to put LSU back up, 10-7 with 8:39 left in the first half. Oklahoma answered quickly, driving 75 yards in only three plays, with Xavier Robinson taking it in from two yards out. 14-10 Sooners with 7:22 left in the second quarter. In a purple flash, Aaron Anderson took the Oklahoma kickoff at the goal line and raced 100 yards for a touchdown to give LSU the lead back, 17-14. The Sooners responded with an 11 play, 49 yard drive that ended with a 44 yard field goal by Zach Schmit, to tie the game at 17-17 with 2:13 left in the first half. Garrett Nussmeier returned to the game and lead the Tigers on a 6 play, 66 yard scoring drive. The score came on a 40 yard touchdown pass from Nussmeier to Chris Hilton Jr., who made an incredible catch in the end zone for the score. 24-17 Tigers. with 45 seconds left on the clock. The game would go to halftime with LSU up by seven. LSU extended their lead mid-way through the third quarter, driving 88 yards on nine plays, ending with a 45 yard touchdown bomb from Garrett Nussmeier to Chris Hilton Jr. 31-17 Tigers with 6:48 left in the quarter. LSU got their first takeaway of the night, when Ashton Stamps put big pressure on Bauer Sharpe, who was attempting a trick play. Sharpe just heaved the ball up for grabs. Sage Ryan intercepted the ball at the LSU 36 and returned it to the Tigers' 48. The Tiger offense looked to drive another nail into the Sooners' coffin, driving 54 yards in nine plays, culminating with a 22 yard Damian Ramos field goal. 34-17 Tigers with 14:47 left in the contest. LSU added to their lead late on a Damian Ramos 32 yard field goal. 37-17 Tigers with 3:19 left on the clock. With the win, LSU finished the regular season 8-4 overall and 5-3 in SEC play... Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - In front of 102,086 fans, the LSU Tigers ended their three-game losing skid at home in a 24-17 victory over the visiting Vanderbilt Commodores. The Tigers looked like the better form of themselves as they looked for a positive note. The Tigers could not have had a more disastrous start. Zavion Thomas fumbled on the opening kickoff, but LSU was able to get back on top of it. A three-and-out drive that included a false start penalty was the result. Vanderbilt wasted no time taking advantage of the Tigers’ poor pass coverage, scoring a 63-yard bomb from Diego Pavia on their first offensive play from scrimmage. Just like that, 7-0, Commodores. In search of a much-needed response, LSU’s Josh Williams delivered a big-time 20-yard rushing touchdown to cap off an 8-play, 90-yard drive for the Tigers that would tie the game at seven apiece. On the next Tiger drive, the offense orchestrated a long 12-play drive that eventually resulted in a turnover on downs inside the Vanderbilt five-yard line. LSU’s Nussmeier tried a jump ball pass to Trey’Dez Green, but was just a bit out of his reach. After punts were exchanged, Vanderbilt would commit a turnover of their own when a fourth-down pass attempt fell incomplete. LSU’s Williams would find paydirt a second time with a 21-yard score on the ground. The TD would complete a nine-play drive to give the Tigers a 14-7 lead before halftime. Vanderbilt used the first six and a half minutes of the second half to cut into the Tigers’ lead. A Commodore 12-play, 46-yard drive ended with a 47-yard field goal, making the score 14-10, LSU. Garrett Nussmeier showed flashes of what he’s fully capable of on the ensuing LSU drive. He hung in the pocket to deliver a strike to CJ Daniels on a critical fourth-and-five play. The very next snap? Nuss found a WIDE-OPEN Kyren Lacy for a touchdown in the back corner of the endzone. The Bayou Bengals would extend the lead to 21-10 with 3:32 to go in the third quarter. LSU forced another Vanderbilt punt and proceeded to go on its longest drive of the game. The Tigers went 74 yards on 13 plays over 6:08. Tiger Stadium thought that LSU had come away with a touchdown, but after review, the pass to Aaron Anderson was ruled incomplete, forcing a Damian Ramos FGA. The three points put LSU up 24-10. The Commodores were not done fighting. With 10:41 remaining in the game, Diego Pavia led Vanderbilt on a 75-yard drive and capped it off with a touchdown scramble. Vandy’s drive was propelled by a fake punt conversion on a fourth-down attempt. Although it seemed LSU had gotten the stop short of the line-to-gain, refs disagreed upon review. LSU’s lead was cut in half, 24-17. LSU utilized the rest of the game clock, and that would be all she wrote in this chapter of Tiger v. Commodore football. Next up, LSU will host the Oklahoma Sooners in Tiger Stadium for the regular season conclusion. That game will kick off at 6:00 p.m. CST on Saturday, November 30, 2024. Weil GAINESVILLE, FL - LSU traveled to Gainesville hoping to stop their two game losing streak against the (4-5) Florida Gators. Unfortunately, the Tigers continued their poor play as they fell 27-16 in the Swamp on Saturday night. This was a very bad loss for the Bayou Bengals. Any chance for the SEC Championship game or the 12 team playoff is now gone 100%. The Tigers played with no fire, no emotion and had no sense of urgency. They were super flat all night long. All of a sudden the LSU offense had forgotten how to score touchdowns, only scoring three in the last ten quarters. This is also the first time in the Brian Kelly era that the Tigers have lost three in a row. Tonight's final stats.... Garret Nussmeier finished 27-47 for 260 yards with one touchdown. Nussmeier was sacked seven times. Caden Durham rushed for 91 yards on 20 carries. Josh Williams had 69 yards on 13 carries. Aaron Anderson led the team in receiving with seven catches for 72 yards and one touchdown. Mason Taylor had 59 yards on six grabs. Josh Williams had four catches for 31 yards. Kyren Lacy finished with three catches for 43 yards. CJ Daniels had three grabs for 32 yards. On defense, Davhon Keys led the team with five tackles. Jardin Gilbert had four tackles. Bradyn Swinson, Greg Penn III and Zy Alexander all had four tackles each.. Whit Weeks finished with only three tackles. The defense forced no turnovers or registered any sacks. The last three games have been disturbing and embarrassing. How will this team respond next week against Vanderbilt at home? Only time will tell... The Gators would find the scoreboard first, driving 80 yards on five plays, culminating with a 23 yard touchdown pass from DJ Lagway to Elijhah Badger. With 7:12 left in the first quarter, Florida led, 7-0. LSU responded with a nice 13 play, 41 yard drive, that unfortunately ended with a missed 51 yard field goal attempt by Damian Ramos. The Tigers finally punched it in. Garrett Nussmeier found Aaron Anderson for a 28 yard touchdown to tie the game. The scoring drive went 84 yards in 14 plays, eating 5:51 off the clock. 7-7 with 7:39 left in the first half. Florida answered by driving 44 yards in nine plays to retake the lead on a 49 yard Trey Smack field goal. 10-7 Gators with 3:27 left in the quarter. LSU then drove 47 yards in 12 plays, settling for a 50 yard Damian Ramos filed goal to tie the game at 10-10 with only ten seconds left on the clock. The contest would head into halftime all even at 10-10. The Tigers would strike first in the second half. LSU drove 62 yards in 15 plays and apparently had a touchdown when Garrett Nussmeier found CJ Daniels for a 13 yard touchdown, but offensive pass interference against Kyren Lacy eliminated the score. Damian Ramos then kicked his third field goal of the contest to give LSU a 13-10 lead with 5:54 left in the third quarter. Florida responded with a eight play, 38 yard drive to tie the game on a Trey Smack 55 yard field goal. 13-13 with 3:07 left in the third quarter. On LSU's next possession, Nussmeier fumbled while being sacked on third and six. Emery Jones Jr. picked up the ball and began to run with it, but he fumbled while being tackled. Florida recovered Emery's fumble at the LSU 34 yard line. Thankfully, the LSU defense would stand tall and force a Florida punt to end the Gators' scoring threat. The Gators would retake the lead early in the fourth quarter on a one yard touchdown run by Ja'Kobi Jackson. 20-13 Florida with 13:58 left in the game. LSU answered with a 15 play, 54 yard drive that stalled deep in Florida territory, forcing a field goal attempt. Damian Ramos drilled a 38 yard field goal to pull the Tigers to within, 20-16 with 5:18 left on the clock. Florida drove a huge nail into the coffin on their next offensive possession. Jadan Baugh took a toss pitch, turned the corner and raced 55 yards for a touchdown. With only 3:48 left in the contest, the Gators led, 27-16. The LSU offense was unable to produce anymore points, as the Tigers dropped their third straight. With the loss, LSU falls to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in SEC play. Next up, the Tigers return home to Tiger Stadium to host Vanderbilt on Saturday, November 23. Kickoff is still TBA.... Both teams are reeling from blowout conference losses last week, and will be in search of a rebound performance. Last Week (W11): LSU has had every opportunity this season to take a firm grasp over the SEC, but once again, fell short. After last weekend’s pitiful loss at home against the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Tigers find themselves on the outside looking in. They no longer control their own destiny of reaching the SEC Championship or College Football Playoff and will need some help along the way. LSU 13- Alabama 42 Florida put on a disheartening effort versus the Texas Longhorns last Saturday after the announcement of Head Coach Billy Napier will be retaining his position into next season. Just one week after hanging tough with the Georgia Bulldogs in a hostile environment, the Gators showed regression on the road. How will they fare at home against an inconsistent LSU team desperate to win a game? Florida 17- Texas 49 Series History: If you look solely at the overall record, you would think that LSU and Florida have gone blow for blow throughout their rivaled history. However, although LSU only has one more victory in the matchup (34-33-3), the Tigers have dominated in the last decade. The Gators have only managed two wins in the previous ten meetings, but have dropped all of the last five. The last Florida win came in 2018 when they came out on top at home, 27-19. Injury Report: Garrett Dellinger will miss his second consecutive game at Florida after having a surgical procedure performed during LSU’s last bye week. Although the hope was that the starting lineman would be able to return for the road trip, he will remain sidelined and look to recover. With top backup Tyree Adams still listed as questionable, it seems that Paul Mubenga will get his second start in as many weeks. The biggest question surrounding Florida practices this week is the status of quarterback DJ Lagway. Lagway suffered a hamstring injury in Week 10 and even though initial thoughts were his season may be over, Napier said he is “trending in the right direction” for a possible return against the Tigers. If Lagway is unable to go, the Gators will turn to Aidan Warner to lead the offense again this Saturday. Keys to Victory: * Get Home with Pressure LSU has only managed two sacks over their last six quarters played. That includes no sacks versus Marcel Reed or Jalen Milroe. The Tigers have got to gameplan for collapsing the pocket as well as maintaining containment on the outside against stretch plays and scrambling quarterbacks. LSU’s got the talent and playmakers to cause havoc, they’ve just got to execute at a high-level. * Use Your Playmakers Against the Tide, running back Caden Durham toted the ball just a total of eight times. Even worse? He got 45 of his 63 rushing yards on his first carry of the game. Kyren Lacy was held without a reception in the first half. Zavion Thomas can only do so much on special teams. He touched the ball just three times offensively. Josh Williams had as many catches as Aaron Anderson and CJ Daniels combined. Notice an issue? * Control What You Can With a midseason collapse, LSU has to win out the rest of their schedule to have a chance at making any noise. The Tigers face their final road game of the season Saturday versus Florida, then return home to close out against Vanderbilt and Oklahoma. All three are winnable, but it starts with just that. You’ve got to win out to salvage your season. * Where to Watch: Fans can watch LSU v. Florida live on ABC or stream from ESPN+ when the game kicks off from The Swamp at 2:30 p.m. CST on Saturday, November 16, 2024. * Predictions and Final Thoughts: At this point, nothing would surprise me in this one. LSU, though chances are slim, still has a path to the SEC Championship. Pressure is rising for Brian Kelly and the coaching staff to get the Tigers back in contention for high rankings and playoff appearances. Florida and Napier, on the other hand, have little if anything to lose at this point in the season. A “don’t hold anything back” type of win at home against a Top-25 team would bode well for not just confidence, but in preparation for next season. Kelly knows his seat is hot, and I think he gets his message across this week. I think, hope, and pray that LSU comes out on top, but I expect the Gators to make it tough. I’ll go with the Tigers, 31-23. Make sure you go to DaBootSports.com for all of your LSU, Saints and Southern University coverage all season long. As for the Tigers, they have all but been officially eliminated from the College Football Playoff and now wait to find out how far they will drop in the polls and rankings. The offense couldn't get into any kind of rhythm and had perhaps their worse performance of the season. It was a dismal, wet night in Death Valley as Garrett Nussmeier struggled, finishing his night going, 27-42 for 239 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Once again, the running attack was MIA. Caden Durham rushed for 63 yards on eight carries. Zavion Thomas rushed twice for 18 yards. Josh Williams had 9 yards on six carries. Josh Williams led the Tigers in receiving with 38 yards on six catches. Kyren Lacy finished with 5 catches for 79 yards and a touchdown grab. Mason Taylor added 50 yards on four catches. Penalties hurt LSU throughout the night on both sides of the ball. The defense had no answer for Jalen Milroe who rushed for 185 yards and four touchdowns. Whit Weeks finished the night with 15 tackles. Bradyn Swinson had 8 tackles. Ashton Stamps, Grag Penn III and Jardin Gilbert all finished with 7 tackles each. LSU won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. The Tiger defense knew that containing Jalen Milroe would be a difficult task, but Alabama exploited the advantage from the get-go. Milroe displayed his mobility on a 39-yard scamper to the end zone to give the Crimson Tide an early 7-0 advantage. The Tigers responded quickly as Zavion Thomas took the ensuing return back to midfield. Freshman tailback Caden Durham then got LSU to the five-yard line, knocking on the end zone. The offense would stall out, forcing Brian Kelly to settle for a short field goal even after the big plays. Tigers trailed 7-3. Alabama would take the ball back for the next seven minutes en route to a 15-play 75-yard drive that resulted in another rushing touchdown. The Tide extend their lead to 14-3 with just over two minutes to play in the first quarter. Garrett Nussmeier and the LSU offense went back to work as the first-quarter clock ran out and the sky opened up with heavy showers. After the second timeout of the half was called, LSU would be forced to punt. Alabama would do the same on their next drive. Although the Tigers’ drive would look promising, penalties would ultimately set the offense back, forcing yet another field goal attempt. Damian Ramos would connect from 43 yards to chip into the Tide’s lead. The score read 14-6 with 8:26 to go in the half. On the next Crimson Tide series, the Bama offense opted to go for it on fourth-and-one just beyond midfield. LSU’s defense came up with a massive stop to put the ball back in Garrett Nussmeier’s hands. Except, the very next play, Nuss would get strip-sacked, allowing Alabama to take over on the Tigers’ 32-yard line. Jalen Milroe would cap off the extra possession with his second rushing score of the game, putting the Tide in front, 21-6, just before halftime. The LSU Tigers’ first drive of the second half was… less than ideal. After converting two fourth downs and getting the football down inside the Alabama five-yard line, Garrett Nussmeier tried to force a ball into a smothered CJ Daniels, but it was intercepted in the end zone as a result. Another empty possession with time dwindling on LSU’s playoff hopes. Just when it looked like LSU would get another defensive stop and the first sack of the contest, officials flagged Sai’Vion Jones for a personal foul face mask penalty, extending the Crimson Tide’s drive. Following the play, Tiger fans began throwing debris onto the field, marking the fourth consecutive week the situation has occurred across the country since the controversial penalty overturn during the Texas and Georgia game in Week 8. Jalen Milroe would then gash the Tigers for his third and fourth rushing touchdowns of the game during the second half to cap off Alabama’s huge blowout victory. An abysmal performance, to say the least, was put forth by the Tigers. Up next, LSU will travel to Gainesville, Florida for a road game against the Gators. That game can be watched live on ABC when the teams kickoff at 2:30 p.m. CST on Saturday, November 16, 2024. Win, Loss, or Tie… Rain or Shine… Geaux Tigers!
