Da Boot Sports 12/31/2024 By: Jason Watson Jr. NRG Stadium; Houston, TX - For the first time since 1985, the Lions, Tigers, and Bears met on the gridiron (Correction: there were no Lions involved) but, oh my, what a game. In front of a crowd of nearly 60,000 strong, LSU bested Baylor in the 2024 Kinder’s Texas Bowl by a score of 44-31. The Tigers earned their ninth victory of the season while Baylor fell to 8-5. The biggest difference maker in this one was LSU’s defense holding the Bears to just 1-6 on fourth down attempts. Garrett Nussmeier would finish with 300+ yards and three touchdowns through the air en route to the MVP award; pairing nicely with his MVP in the ReliaQuest Bowl last season. LSU went 68 yards on 12 plays to go up first in the Texas Bowl with 8:31 left in the first quarter. Garrett Nussmeier found Trey’Dez Green in the back of the end zone to cap the impressive opening drive that featured a fourth down conversion, also by way of a Green reception. On the ensuing series, the Bear offense had put together a promising couple of plays, but to no avail. LSU’s Davhon Keys took a tipped pass back 40 yards for a pick-six. The Tigers’ lone defensive touchdown of 2024 came fittingly on New Year’s Eve to extend the lead to 14-0. Baylor and LSU exchanged punts before the first quarter winded down, but the Bears would get on the scoreboard after the first play in the second period. Baylor’s Sawyer Robertson found Josh Cameron for a 21-yard back-shoulder touchdown. After initially being ruled as incomplete, officials reviewed and found the wideout did regain possession from a bobble before stepping out of bounds. 14-7, Tigers. It would not take long for LSU to strike back. In just 2:30, Nussmeier delivered back-to-back darts with the ladder being a 41-yard touchdown strike to Chris Hilton Jr. who burned the defending cornerback. After a Baylor punt, Hilton came down with another 40+ yard reception but was officially ruled down at the one-yard line. On third and goal, Trey’Dez Green was left wide-open for his second TD of the game. After the extra point, LSU led 28-7 with 8:46 to go in the half. The Tigers got a big stop against the Bears on a fourth and ten attempt to force a turnover on downs, but could not take advantage offensively. LSU would settle for a Damian Ramos field goal attempt that would be blocked. Baylor used the momentum shift to cut into the deficit with a one-yard touchdown rush by tailback Dawson Pendergrass. On the scoring play, LSU linebacker Whit Weeks stayed down with what appeared to be a severe ankle injury. As he was loaded onto the medical cart, the entire LSU sideline jogged to the field, sending their star off. Zavion Thomas took the following kickoff and returned it for a 95-yard TD return in a sort of “right back at cha” type of response. Ramos’ point after would be missed, giving the Tigers a 20-point lead, 34-14. The Bears utilized the two-minute offense to score once more. This time, a made-field goal from Baylor to punctuate a wild first half of football. Although trailing 34-17 at the break, Baylor played well enough to keep themselves within a manageable margin. LSU’s defense bent, but did not break on the Bears’ opening drive of the second half. After driving downfield to the Tigers’ nine-yard line, Baylor went for it on fourth down, but the receiver could not get a foot down in the back of the end zone. Yet another turnover on downs for the green and gold. Just three plays later, another swing of the pendulum came in the back-and-forth affair. LSU’s Aaron Anderson had a 33-yard catch and run before having the ball knocked out and the Bears recovered. Baylor would not waste their next chance inside the Tigers’ five. A four-yard TD throw from Robertson to Ashtyn Hawkins would bring the score to within ten, 34-24. A Nussmeier interception on the next Tiger possession looked like it had all but deflated the LSU sideline. A horrid snap from the Bears center on fourth and one from the LSU 17-yard line led to a 36-yard loss and another turnover. As the end of the third quarter dwindled and the fourth began, LSU held a ten-point advantage and Josh Williams delivered with a direct snap touchdown carry to put the Tigers up 41-24. The Tigers would then add three on a 43-yard Ramos FGM, putting their total at 44. With 6:20 left in the contest, Pendergrass would rush for his second TD of the night to pull the Bears within 13, but that would be all she wrote as LSU was able to salt away most of the remainder of the game clock. Da Boot Sports 12/30/2024 Article Courtesy of Crescent City Sports By: Grant Chachere LSU will face a tough task in the 2024 edition of the Texas Bowl, going up against a solid Baylor squad.Despite starting the season 2-4, Baylor won six straight games to finish the regular season with an 8-4 record. During that stretch, the Bears averaged 41.3 points per game. Baylor’s head coach is Dave Aranda, who served as the defensive coordinator at LSU from 2016 to 2019. He was the defensive architect for LSU’s 2019 national championship team. Since joining Baylor, Aranda has compiled a 31-29 overall record. His best season at Baylor so far was in 2021 when he led the Bears to a 12-2 record, winning both the Big 12 Championship and the Sugar Bowl. The Bears average 434.5 yards per game, ranking 25th in the country, and employ a balanced offensive scheme that thrives on controlling the tempo and exploiting mismatches. Their rushing attack, featuring an experienced offensive line and physical running backs, remains the centerpiece. However, quarterback Sawyer Robertson has shown flashes of brilliance, delivering timely throws to keep defenses honest. Although Baylor’s defense can be inconsistent, it is experienced and performs well in high-pressure situations, excelling at stopping offenses on third down and in the red zone. Here is everything you need to know about Baylor heading into the Texas Bowl on December 31. Offense Robertson anchors Baylor’s passing attack and has enjoyed a great season in his first full year as a starter. Robertson, who became the starter in Baylor’s third game of the season, has completed nearly 63% of his passes for 2,626 yards, with 26 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His 155.0 passer efficiency rating ranks 14th in the country, making him one of the most efficient quarterbacks nationally. The Bears provide Robertson with a wealth of reliable pass-catching targets. Redshirt junior Josh Cameron is Baylor’s leading receiver, with 44 receptions for 643 yards and nine touchdowns. Cameron is also a prolific punt returner, averaging over 20 yards per return, earning a spot on the All-Big 12 First Team. Ashton Hawkins, a Texas State transfer, is Baylor’s second-leading receiver with 41 receptions for 512 yards and four touchdowns. Tight end Michael Trigg, an All-Big 12 Second Team selection, has recorded 30 catches for 395 yards and four touchdowns, establishing himself as one of the best in the country. Baylor’s running game is led by redshirt freshman Bryson Washington, who has carried the ball 170 times for 1,004 yards and 12 touchdowns. Washington has rushed for 100 or more yards in five of the last six games. When Washington needs a breather, sophomore running back Dawson Pendergrass steps in capably, contributing 100 carries for 608 yards and four touchdowns. The offensive line is highly experienced, with four of the five starters having at least two years of starting experience. This unit has been instrumental in Baylor’s balanced attack, enabling the Bears to rush for 188.5 yards per game (34th nationally) and nearly five yards per carry. The standout of the offensive line is guard Omar Aigbedion, an All-Big 12 honorable mention. Aigbedion, a former Montana State player, has started 38 games in his career and was an All-Big Sky performer in 2023. Defense LSU’s offense should feel confident. Baylor’s defense has been inconsistent throughout the season, ranking in the bottom half of the Big 12 in total defense. The Bears allow 382.8 yards per game, placing them 10th in the Big 12 and 83rd nationally. This includes 227.6 passing yards allowed per game (85th nationally) and 155.2 rushing yards per game (78th nationally). Despite these struggles, Baylor excels at forcing turnovers and performing in high-pressure situations. The Bears have intercepted 13 passes, ranking 31st in the nation, and are tied for 43rd in turnovers gained. Baylor ranks second in the Big 12 and 36th nationally in third-down defense, allowing conversions just 34.9% of the time. Additionally, Baylor ranks second in the conference and 37th nationally in red zone defense, an area where LSU’s offense has struggled, ranking 74th in red zone efficiency. Baylor’s defensive line features two All-Big 12 performers at defensive end—Treven Ma’ae and Jackie Marshall. Defensive tackle Elinus Noel, a New Orleans native, anchors the interior. Ma’ae has 37 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. Marshall has recorded 39 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, four quarterback hurries, and a forced fumble. Noel, who previously played at Nicholls and Texas Southern, has collected 17 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and 0.5 sacks. Linebackers Matt Jones and Keaton Thomas, both All-Big 12 First Team selections, form one of the best linebacker corps in the Big 12. Jones has 103 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, a forced fumble, and six pass breakups. Thomas leads the team with 107 tackles, including seven for loss, along with 2.5 sacks and an interception. At the JACK position, Garmon Randolph and Steve Linton rotate effectively, each contributing three sacks. In the secondary, four of Baylor’s five starters have at least one interception. Cornerbacks Caden Jenkins and Lorando Johnson lead the unit, with Jenkins recording an interception and four pass breakups, while Johnson has one interception and 10 pass breakups. Free safety Devin Lemear and strong safety Devyn Bobby contribute significantly to pass coverage. Lemear has one interception and two pass breakups, while Bobby has 66 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, three interceptions, and two pass breakups. Corey Gordon, who rotates with Bobby, also has three interceptions. Carl Williams IV starts at the STAR position, assisting with pass coverage and run support near the line of scrimmage. Special Teams Baylor boasts one of the best special teams units in the country. The Bears rank first in punt returns (20.71 yards per return), fifth in net punting (43.55 yards per punt), and eighth in kickoff return defense (allowing just 15.68 yards per return). Kicker Isaiah Hankins has made 13 of 18 field goal attempts, with a long of 51 yards. He is perfect from 39 yards or less but has gone 6-for-11 from beyond 40 yards. Palmer Williams, an All-Big 12 First Team punter, averages 49.6 yards per punt. He has downed 14 punts inside the 20-yard line and recorded 21 punts of 50 yards or more. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - On Friday, December 17, the Tigers added another offensive lineman through the portal. Former Northwestern offensive lineman Josh Thompson sign with LSU. Previous reports predicted that Thompson had decided to sign with Tennessee, but apparently Brian Kelly made a strong last minute pushed that flipped him to Baton Rouge. Thompson has graded extremely high both as a run blocker and pass protector, making him an impact full package player. Exactly what LSU needs after losing four starters from the offensive line. With the addition of Braelin Moore and Thompson, LSU has added two quality offensive linemen who rate very high in their run blocking skills, something that the Bayou Bengals struggled with in 2024. Expect Brian Kelly to remain active and aggressive in the transfer portal. The portal winter session closes at the end of tomorrow, Saturday, December 28 and will re-open in the spring for ten days, from April 16 to the April 25. *Harold Perkins made the announcement that he will be returning to LSU in 2025. The news had unofficially leaked a couple of weeks ago, but the star LSU Linebacker made it official on Friday. He missed a majority of the 2024 season after suffering a torn ACL in the UCLA game on September 21. Moore started 12 games in each of the last two seasons at Virginia Tech. He started at guard in 2023 before transitioning to center this past season. With LSU losing four starting offensive linemen, Moore helps fill an immediate need. Another former Florida State Seminole has transferred to Baton Rouge. Defensive End Patrick Payton will now wear the purple and gold. He registered 110 tackles and 16 sacks in three season at FSU. He joins LSU's roster with one year of eligibility, Payton will be a force rushing from the edge. That's 13 key transfer portal signings by Brian Kelly. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - Brian Kelly continues to land quality talent at key positions in the transfer portal. Former Middle Tennessee State Punter Grant Chadwick signed with LSU. Last season he averaged 43.4 yards per punt and was on the Ray Guy watchlist. Louisiana native and Edna Karr graduate, wide receiver Destyn Hill has transferred to LSU from Florida State along with Oklahoma transfer WR Nic Anderson. Both possess speed and big play capability. On defense the Tigers inked Defensive End Jack Pyburn from Florida and today, on Friday, signed massive Defensive Tackle Sydir Mitchell from Texas. Mitchel is 6-6, 350 lbs. A major run stopper with a high motor. Last week the Tigers landed corner back Mansoor Delane from Virginia Tech. Delane is a solid defensive back and will no doubt add key depth to the secondary. The Tigers are still waiting on decisions from Georgia Tech WR Eric Singleton, (most are expecting him to sign with Auburn),,.. and Virginia Tech Center Braelin Moore. (LSU is currently the favorite to land Moore)... The Tigers are also targeting DE Patrick Payton from Florida State, Ex-Washington State star offensive tackle Fa’alili Fa’amoe and Northwestern offensive lineman Josh Thompson. Both Fa'amoe and Thompson would bring much needed playing experience to a huge position of need. The portal closes on December 28th until reopening again in the spring from April 16 to April 25. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The Tigers have been busy, signing some impressive new players through the transfer portal this past week. Each player signed is a position of need for the Bayou Bengals... Former Oklahoma Tight End Bauer Sharpe inked with the purple and gold and should be a nice replacement for Mason Taylor. Next, the Tigers landed a new weapon at wide receiver with former Kentucky Wildcat Barion Brown. Brown should be a key target for Garrett Nussmeier in 2025 after the departure of Kyren Lacy and CJ Daniels. With Rickie Collins opting for the transfer portal, LSU added freshman quarterback Michael Van Buren from Mississippi State. Van Buren started for the Bulldogs for most of the season. On the defensive side of the ball the Tigers have signed Cornerback Ja'Keem Jackson from Florida as LSU looks to continue to rebuild the secondary. With LSU needing depth on the defensive line, they were able to add a nice addition to the roster with Nebraska Defensive End, Edge Rusher Jimari Butler. Butler had a solid season for the Cornhuskers in 2024. The Tigers are in the running for another offensive weapon. Georgia Tech WR Eric Singleton has LSU in his top five. If Singleton chooses the Bayou Bengals that would add another exciting weapon for Nussmeier. After four starters from the O-Line have moved on in their careers, LSU is pursuing Offensive Line help, hoping to sign Virginia Tech Center Braelin Moore. More news to come.... Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve at NRG Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN. It will be the first meeting between LSU and Baylor on the gridiron since the 1985 Liberty Bowl. LSU leads the overall series with the Bears, 8-3. The Tigers, winners of their last two games, stand at 8-4 overall after closing the regular-season with victories over Vanderbilt and Oklahoma. LSU is making its third bowl appearance under head coach Brian Kelly, who has guided the Tigers to a 28-11 mark since taking over the program in 2022. LSU is 2-0 in bowl games under Kelly, beating Iowa, 63-7, in the Citrus Bowl in 2022 followed by a 35-31 win over Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl last year. The Tigers bring one of the nation’s most explosive passing offenses into the game led by junior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who has thrown for 3,735 yards and 26 touchdowns.
