Da Boot Sports 10/1/2024 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU won their fourth straight contest, downing the South Alabama Jaguars, 42-10 in Tiger Stadium this past Saturday night. It was perhaps the Tigers' most complete victory of the season. The Tigers started fast, scoring on their first four drives of the game. They would take a commanding 35-3 lead into the locker room at the half, before coasting the rest of the way for the win. LSU continues to show improvement each week. It was refreshing to see them dominate a weaker opponent from beginning to end. THE NEGATIVES * LSU's slow start in the second half. They allowed South Alabama to take the second half kickoff and drive right down the field to score a touchdown. The Tigers were simply flat throughout most of the third quarter as they weren't able to score a point until the 14:08 mark of the fourth quarter. * Garrett Nussmeier's two bad decisions that led to a couple of interceptions. Nuss has done a great job of taking care of the football most of the season, but ended up making two bad throws. The first came with 21 seconds left in the first half. It was just a bad off balance throw into coverage. The second came during the Tigers' first drive of the second half. After driving deep into Jaguars' territory, Nussmeier forced a bad throw that was intercepted at the South Alabama's eight yard line and returned out to the USA 32 yard line to end a scoring opportunity. * Disappointing how early fans decided to leave Tiger Stadium. I know it's their choice, but I wish the stadium would stay full deeper into a contest. These young men are playing hard, showing improvement each week and need to see the fan's support in the stands. Keep it Death Valley late into the game and cheer the Tigers on. THE POSITIVES * Caden Durham and the running game. Durham was explosive until he left the contest with a dislocated big toe. After having the toe popped back in place at halftime, Durham could have returned if needed, but because of the opponent, Kelly decided to sit him the rest of the night. He rushed for an amazing 128 yards on only seven carries and a touchdown, finishing with a 18.3 yards per attempt rushing average. He also had three catches for 89 yards, including a 71 yard receiving touchdown that came on the first play of the game. The Tigers finished the night with 237 total rushing yards with four rushing touchdowns. The running game needs to keep improving as we head into the meat of the schedule. * Garrett Nussmeier finished the night going 26-39 for a career high 409 yards with two touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns. He keeps making great throws and is doing a fantastic job of spreading the ball around, completing passes to 11 different players on Saturday night. * The play of the offensive line. Once again they did a solid job of protecting Nuss and continue to improve on their run blocking each week. * The receivers continue to play at a high level. Each week this group gets the job done. Aaron Anderson and Kyren Lacy each had a big game They are impressive each and every week. * The play of the defense. Everyone was wondering how the defense would respond after losing Harold Perkins Jr. for the season with a bad knee injury. They stepped up and played their best game of the season, limiting an explosive South Alabama offense to 10 points and only 333 total yards. They collected three sacks and finished with nine tackles for a loss. * LSU special teams. Zavion Thomas continues to impress in the return game. The punters continue to perform at a high level. The Tigers have their first of two bye weeks of the season before they host Ole Miss in Tiger Stadium on Saturday, October 12 at 6:30pm. John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior) *John 3;16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
