Da Boot Sports 11/23/2024 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - In front of 102,086 fans, the LSU Tigers ended their three-game losing skid at home in a 24-17 victory over the visiting Vanderbilt Commodores. The Tigers looked like the better form of themselves as they looked for a positive note. The Tigers could not have had a more disastrous start. Zavion Thomas fumbled on the opening kickoff, but LSU was able to get back on top of it. A three-and-out drive that included a false start penalty was the result. Vanderbilt wasted no time taking advantage of the Tigers’ poor pass coverage, scoring a 63-yard bomb from Diego Pavia on their first offensive play from scrimmage. Just like that, 7-0, Commodores. In search of a much-needed response, LSU’s Josh Williams delivered a big-time 20-yard rushing touchdown to cap off an 8-play, 90-yard drive for the Tigers that would tie the game at seven apiece. On the next Tiger drive, the offense orchestrated a long 12-play drive that eventually resulted in a turnover on downs inside the Vanderbilt five-yard line. LSU’s Nussmeier tried a jump ball pass to Trey’Dez Green, but was just a bit out of his reach. After punts were exchanged, Vanderbilt would commit a turnover of their own when a fourth-down pass attempt fell incomplete. LSU’s Williams would find paydirt a second time with a 21-yard score on the ground. The TD would complete a nine-play drive to give the Tigers a 14-7 lead before halftime. Vanderbilt used the first six and a half minutes of the second half to cut into the Tigers’ lead. A Commodore 12-play, 46-yard drive ended with a 47-yard field goal, making the score 14-10, LSU. Garrett Nussmeier showed flashes of what he’s fully capable of on the ensuing LSU drive. He hung in the pocket to deliver a strike to CJ Daniels on a critical fourth-and-five play. The very next snap? Nuss found a WIDE-OPEN Kyren Lacy for a touchdown in the back corner of the endzone. The Bayou Bengals would extend the lead to 21-10 with 3:32 to go in the third quarter. LSU forced another Vanderbilt punt and proceeded to go on its longest drive of the game. The Tigers went 74 yards on 13 plays over 6:08. Tiger Stadium thought that LSU had come away with a touchdown, but after review, the pass to Aaron Anderson was ruled incomplete, forcing a Damian Ramos FGA. The three points put LSU up 24-10. The Commodores were not done fighting. With 10:41 remaining in the game, Diego Pavia led Vanderbilt on a 75-yard drive and capped it off with a touchdown scramble. Vandy’s drive was propelled by a fake punt conversion on a fourth-down attempt. Although it seemed LSU had gotten the stop short of the line-to-gain, refs disagreed upon review. LSU’s lead was cut in half, 24-17. LSU utilized the rest of the game clock, and that would be all she wrote in this chapter of Tiger v. Commodore football. Next up, LSU will host the Oklahoma Sooners in Tiger Stadium for the regular season conclusion. That game will kick off at 6:00 p.m. CST on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
