Da Boot Sports 9/28/2024 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU dominated an outmanned South Alabama team in Tiger Stadium to earn a 42-10 victory in front of 102,143 fans. It was perhaps LSU's most complete and consistent performance of the 2024 season, rolling up 667 yards of total offense. 237 yards rushing and 430 yards through the air. Garrett Nussmeier finished the game going 26-39 for a career high 409 yards with two touchdown passes and two interceptions. Nuss also added two rushes for 6 yards with two touchdowns on the ground. Caden Durham led the Tigers in rushing with 128 yards on seven carries and a touchdown. Josh Williams finished with 32 yards on five carries with a touchdown. Zavion Thomas had one carry for 26 yards and Kaleb Jackson added 19 yards on seven carries. It was another great night for the receiving corp. Aaron Anderson finished with six catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. Kyren Lacy had 107 yards on five grabs. Caden Durham added three catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. Mason Taylor finished with three catches for 43 yards. CJ Daniels contributed three grabs for 40 yards and Zavion Thomas added two catches for 24 yards. The defense played their best game of the season, holding an explosive Jaguars offense to 333 total yards on the night. 112 on the ground and 140 yards passing. They registered three sacks and nine tackles for a loss. Greg Penn III led the defense with 14 total tackles, while Whit Weeks finished with nine tackles. Major Burns added 8 tackles on the night and Dashawn Spears had five tackles. It was a solid performance by the LSU defense. LSU took the opening kickoff and wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. On the first play of the game, Garrett Nussmeier hit running back Caden Durham out of the backfield and the true freshman outraced the South Alabama defense for a 71 yard touchdown up the near sideline. 7-0 LSU with 14:36 left in the opening quarter. one play, 71 yards in 14 seconds... After a quick three and out, the Jaguars punted the ball back to LSU. On first and ten from the LSU 13 yard line, Caden Durham took the handoff and exploded up the middle for an 86 yard run down to the South Alabama one yard line. On the next play, Nussmeier took it in on a quarterback sneak. 14-0 Tigers with 10:47 left in the first quarter. After the LSU defense forced another three and out, the Tiger offense drove down the field, scoring on a 8 yard touchdown run by Caden Durham. 21-0 LSU with 4:45 left in the opening period. South Alabama finally got on the scoreboard, driving 44 yards on ten plays, culminating with a 49 yard field goal by Laith Marjan. 21-3, Tigers with 14:15 left in the second quarter. LSU answered the Jaguars score, driving 60 yards in five plays. This time it was Garrett Nussmeier taking it into the end zone from five yards out. 28-3, Bayou Bengals. The Tigers continued to poor it on South Alabama. Nussmeier would hit Aaron Anderson on a 23 yard touchdown to extend the lead to 35-3 with 4:27 left in the first half. The drive covered 69 yards in only four plays. Neither team could produce another score before the break, as LSU held a 35-3 advantage at halftime. South Alabama took the second half kickoff and marched right down the field for a score. The Jaguars drove 75 yards in nine plays, scoring on a 27 yard touchdown pass from Gio Lopez to Anthony Eager. 35-10, LSU with 10:17 left in the third quarter. LSU responded with a nine play, 75 yard drive, however it ended when Garrett Nussmeier threw an interception at the 8 yard line. Jaden Voisin returned the ball to the Jags' 32 yard line. The Jaguars drove quickly into LSU territory before the Bayou Bengals' defense stood tall and forced a turnover on downs at the one yard line. A very nice goal line stand. The Tigers then drove the final nail into the coffin, driving 99 yards in 12 plays to extend their lead to 42-10 on a four yard touchdown run by Josh Williams with 14:08 left in the contest. With the win the Tigers improve to 4-1 on the season. LSU will have a bye next week before hosting the Ole Miss Rebels in Tiger Stadium on Saturday, October 12.
