Da Boot Sports 8/6/2024 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - We received sad news on Monday that Coach Steve Kragthorpe passed away on August 4th due to complications of Parkinson's disease. He was 59. Kragthorpe was born in Missoula, Montana and went on to attend Highland High School in Pocatello, Idaho. He played high school football with former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Merrill Hoge. Kragthorpe started his college football career at Eastern New Mexico University where he played quarterback in 1983 and 1984. He then transferred to West Texas State. After sitting out the 1985 season, he once again played quarterback in 1986 and 1987. He started his coaching career as the quarterback coach at Northern Arizona (1990-91), he then became their offensive coordinator (1992-92). Coach Kragthorpe then became the offensive coordinator at North Texas (1994-95). He then took the quarterback coach position at Boston College in 1996. He would then move to College Station, Texas to become the quarterback coach for the Aggies in 1997 before being promoted to offensive coordinator from 1998-2000. Kragthorpe would then move on to the NFL, taking the quarterback coaching position with the Buffalo Bills from 2001-2002. He would return to the college ranks as Tulsa hired him as their head coach. He led the Golden Hurricanes from 2003-2006. He then became the head coach at Louisville from 2007-2009. From 2011-2012, Kragthorpe became the quarterbacks coach at LSU, where the decline of his health forced him to retire from coaching. While at LSU Coach Kragthorpe always took time to talk to me. He was a very kind person. I had the pleasure of taking pictures of his son, Brad Kragthorpe who was a quarterback on the LSU roster from 2012-2015. He was very appreciative of that. I'll alway remember the fun conversations that we had. Below are a few photos that I took of Coach Kragthorpe during his stay at LSU. RIP coach...
