Da Boot Sports 1/29/2025 By: Jason Watson Jr. BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU played host to the #1 Auburn Tigers in a matchup of SEC big cats. No matter what, the Tigers were coming out on top, but unfortunately for the home crowd, it was the visiting team that came out on top in an 87-74 triumph. It marked the first time this season that LSU would lose when scoring 74 or more in a game. LSU was ignited by a fiery start on the defensive front holding Auburn scoreless for nearly three minutes out of the gate. The Tigers jumped to a 6-0 lead before the top-ranked team responded with back-to-back buckets. Costly turnovers allowed Auburn to keep within striking distance of the lead, but efficient shooting and relentless effort from the LSU frontcourt led the Tigers to a 16-14 lead midway through the first half. A flagrant-one foul against LSU’s Cam Carter pushed the momentum meter in Auburn’s favor as they went on a 12-0 run before a Jordan Sears fast break layup halted the scoring drought. LSU would enter the bonus with 6:16 remaining in the half but struggled to find a reliable option on the offensive side. Although having better shooting splits than Auburn, LSU was being out-rebounded heavily. The Tigers also had double the turnovers of Auburn. With less than three minutes to play in period one, LSU trailed 33-24. A poor finish to the first half from Matt McMahon’s squad allowed Auburn to move out to a 12-point advantage at the break. LSU’s struggles with turnovers continued with a woeful 15 through the first 20 minutes of play. Auburn had 22 more shot attempts than LSU after the first period… hard to beat the top-ranked team in the nation with that kind of advantage given. Seven minutes into the first period, Auburn was forced into a timeout after LSU went on a 12-5 run of their own, cutting the deficit to just five. With 11:56 to go in the game, Auburn had reached the limit for team fouls giving LSU the green light to be aggressive and attack the inside paint. As the second period progressed, the lead stretched and shrunk like an accordion. Every time LSU made a small run, it seemed Auburn had an answer. Too many wasted opportunities from the charity stripe and an inability to box out around the glass proved to be LSU’s Achilles heel throughout the second period. LSU would eventually succumb to the top-ranked Auburn Tigers in a valiant effort. Next up, LSU will host the Texas Longhorns in a battle of teams fighting for a March Madness tournament spot. After dropping six of its last seven since beginning conference play, Saturday’s contest is one the Tigers certainly cannot afford to drop. Geaux Tigers! Da Boot Sports 1/25/2025 By: Terrill J. Weil TUSCALOOSA, AL - LSU traveled to Tuscaloosa to take on the #4 ranked Crimson Tide on Saturday night and played a hard, but fell short, falling to Bama, 80-73. LSU only trailed by five, 69-64 with 3:45 remaining, but couldn't generate enough offense to pull out the keep pace. After falling behind by 12 with two minutes left, the Tigers fought and scratched until the end, battling back to within six, 79-73 with 39 seconds remaining, but Bama would hold on for the victory. As well as they competed, poor shooting late in the game doomed the Bayou Bengals. They finished the night shooting only 39% from the floor. They were horrible from behind the three point arc only hitting 3-23 for 13%. The Tigers left five points at the free throw line, sinking 14-19 for 74%. The eight Tiger turnovers in the second half came at crucial times and were costly. Jordan Sears led the team with 21 points. Cam Carter finished with 17. Corey Chest scored 12 points with 18 rebounds. Daimion Collins added 11. Five other Tigers finished with single digit scoring. LSU opened the game with a 7-2 run, but Bama would then run off seven straight to take a 9-7 lead at the 15:49 media timeout. Over the next five minutes the Bayou Bengals would go on a 10-4 run to take a 17-13 lead at the 11:01 mark. In a game of runs, the Tide responded with a 10-4 run over the next four minutes to take a 23-21 advantage at the 7:28 official's timeout. After trailing by six, LSU would fight back pull to within one, 31-30 with 3:27 left in the first half. In a very well played and entertaining ball game, the Tigers headed into the locker room at the half all even with the 4th ranked Crimson Tide, 40-40. LSU shot 15-38 from the floor in the first half for 39%. They only hit 2-14 from three point range for 14%. From the free throw line, they sank 8-10 for 80%. LSU turned the ball over only six times while forcing Bama into eight. The Tigers out-rebounded the Tide in the first 20 minutes, 23-17. The contest had seven ties and eight lead changes in the first half. Jordan Sears and Corey Chest both led the team at the break with 10 points each. Chest registered a double-double in the first half with his 10 points and an amazing 15 rebounds. Daimion Collins scored 7 points. Cam Carter added 6. Mike Williams III finished with 3, while Robert Miller III and Trey'Dez Green both added 2 points each. The back and forth battle continued in the second half with Bama out-scoring the Tigers, 12-10 over the first five minutes to lead, 52-50 at the 15:02 mark. Bama would go on a 11-8 run over the next four minutes to take a 63-58 lead, forcing a Matt McMahon timeout with 11:10 left in the contest. LSU continued to hang tough with the Tide, keeping within striking distance, trailing by five, 69-64 with 3:45 left on the clock. The Tigers simply went ice cold the rest of the way allowing Bama to pull away late. With 2:03 left, the Tide led, 77-64. With the loss LSU falls to, 12-7 overall and 1-5 in conference play. Next up LSU returns home to host top ranked Auburn on Wednesday, January 29. Tipoff is set for 6:00 pm. The game will be televised on the SEC Network. Once again, the Tigers had a serious issue with turning the ball over as they committed 18 on the night. LSU played the Aggies tough until halfway through the second half, then began to meltdown. Poor shooting and turnovers. You can't win in the SEC if you don't play well for 40 minutes. 57 points scored is a season low for LSU. LSU shot only 36% from the floor for the night. They were a poor, 7-29 from behind the three point arc for 24%. They sank 16-18 free throws for 89%. A&M outrebounded the Tigers, 38-33. Cam Carter led the team with 16 points. Jordan Sears finished with 11. Dji Bailey added 7 points. Curtis Givens III and Robert Miller III had 6 points each. Daimion Collins and Mike Williams III scored 4 points each and Derek Fountain finished with 3 points. LSU started slow, allowing A&M to race out to an 11-2 lead at the 15:48 mark. The Tigers finally scored their first basket with 15: 13 left in the first half on a shot by Daimion Collins. 11-4 Aggies. The Tigers finally settled down and raised their level of play, outscoring A&M, 8-5 over the next four minutes to cut the Aggie lead to 16-12 at the 10:20 official's timeout. LSU went on a 11-7 run, but could only hold onto the lead briefly, as the Aggies held a two point lead, 27-25 at the 3:11 mark of a very competitive contest. The Bayou Bengals refused to back down to the 11th ranked Aggies, playing them to a tie at halftime. 30-30. LSU shot 33% from from the floor in the first half. They sank 4-16 three point attempts for 25%. The Tigers continue to shoot great from the free throw line, sinking 8-9 from the line for 89%. LSU turned the ball over seven times while forcing A&M into five and the Tigers out-rebounded the top rebounding team in the county, 21-19 at the break. Jordan Sears led the Tigers at halftime with 6 points. Dji Bailey scored 5. Cam Carter, Robert Miller III, Mike Williams III and Daimion Collins all finished with 4 points each. Curtis Givens III added 3 points. The pace of the game picked up with both teams pushing the ball up and down the floor. A&M barely outscored the Tigers 9-8 over the first four minutes of the second half. 39-38, Aggies with 15:45 left on the clock. LSU once again, briefly held the led, but could build on it, allowing the Aggies to outscore them, 6-5 over the next four minutes to hold a 45-43 advantage at the 15:00 official's timeout. Both teams would go scoreless for nearly four minutes. Then all of a sudden, like pushing a button, LSU did nothing but miss shots badly while turning the ball over and over and over again. A&M took advantage, going on a 7-0 run to build a nine point lead, 52-43 with 8:13 left in the contest. The rest of the way, Texas A&M got hot and LSU was not. The Tigers continued to take poor shots, missing badly, terrible offensive play and the Aggies poured it on to build a 65-52 lead with only 3:18 left. LSU now falls to 12-6 overall and 1-4 in SEC play. Next up, the Tigers stay on the road, traveling to Tuscaloosa to play Alabama on Saturday, January 25 at 7:30 pm.
