NICEVILLE, Florida – The LSU men’s basketball team scored on 13 of its first 14 possessions and went on to an easy 96-63 win over DePaul Saturday night in the championship game of the Emerald Coast Classic at the Raider Arena at Northwest Florida State College.
The Tigers are now 7-0 for the first time since the 2021-22 season and won the ECC for the second time, winning in 2021.

Max Mackinnon was named to the All-Tournament team representing LSU and the MVP of the tournament was junior point guard Dedan Thomas Jr.

Seven Tigers scored in double figures this year led by Pablo Tamba with 14 points and a team best seven rebounds. Mike Nwoko, Mackinnon and Jalen Reece each scored 13 points, while Thomas and Robert Miller III posted 12 each and Rashad King 11.

Nwoko scored in double figures for the seventh straight game and Reed had six assists and no turnovers.

Kruz McClure led DePaul with 22 points.

LSU dominated the game almost from the start with LSU scoring the first six points and getting its first double digit lead at 18-8 with 12:36 to go in the first half. The Tigers used a 13-2 run to advance the lead to 27-10 at the 10:49 mark and led by as much as 28 in the final two minutes, leading at intermission, 50-22.

LSU did not let up in the second half, despite playing a lot of combinations, quickly getting the lead into the 30s, leading by as much as 35 for the first time at the 13:20 mark of the half.

LSU for the game shot 68.6 percent (35-of-51) for the game, the second-best scoring percentage away from Baton Rouge since 1956-57. The 33-point victory margin was the largest margin away from home since Feb. 16, 2000 when LSU defeated Ole Miss in Oxford, 97-53. The 96 points was the most points scored by LSU against a Big East team topping the mark scored against Villanova several years ago in the Hall of Fame Tipoff Classic.

LSU, after an off night, was also efficient at the free throw line, making 21-of-26 for 80.8 percent.

LSU had 22 assists on 35 baskets and outrebounded DePaul, 37-19, with 54 points in the paint to just 16 for DePaul.

LSU held DePaul to 42.3 percent overall (22-of-52) and the Blue Demons were just 12-of-23 from the free throw line.

The Tigers now return to Baton Rouge to leave Monday for the ACC/SEC Challenge game at Chesnut Hill, Massachusetts against Boston College. That game is set for Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. on the ACC Network.

Quotes from LSU Head Coach Matt McMahon on the LSU Sports Radio Network:

Opening Statement
“That was a lot of fun to watch. I’m proud of our guys. To play twice in 20 hours. We finished up our postgame meal last night at about 1:00 in the morning. We didn’t go shoot around, we did all of our prep work in the meeting room and in the film room. I thought our guys handled it with great maturity and came out ready to go. It was all aspects of the game. I loved our defensive intensity and effort in the first half. And then the unselfishness, 22 assists on 35 baskets, 70% from the floor. I thought our guys were fantastic.”
On LSU’s historic night…
“I just love that it was efficiently done. We missed 16 shots for the whole day. We continued to impose our will and get to the free throw line. 22 assists to 15 turnovers and some of them were late there in garbage time. Then the balance, I believe it was seven guys in double figures and an eighth guy had eight points. So, I love that. I thought Rashad King, this was a big event for him, he really played well in the two games and that’s kind of my expectation for him. He was awesome. Then, I would love to praise, I know DJ Thomas was the tournament MVP and deservingly so, Max MacKinnon was fantastic all tournament, but I thought Jalen Reece was awesome today. 6/6 from the floor, 6 assists, no turnovers. And then Pablo Tamba, he’s been kind of an unsung guy for us, just plays hard, that’s all he does. He plays hard. He gets 14 points and seven rebounds. Elite defender.”

NICEVILLE, Florida – The LSU Tigers used two 10-0 runs in the first half of play to gain control and score a 71-62 win over Drake Friday night in the semifinals of the Emerald Coast Classic at Raider Arena on the campus of Northwest Florida State College.
The Tigers will face DePaul, a 75-61 winner over Georgia Tech in the other semifinal game. That contest will be at 6 p.m. Saturday and televised on the CBS Sports Network. The broadcast of the game with JD Byars and Coach John Brady will be available in the Baton Rouge area on Guaranty Media affiliate WTGE-FM, 100.7 The Tigers.

The Tigers fell behind in the first half after a 7-0 Drake run, 12-10, before its first 10-0 run which started with a Dedan Thomas Jr., three-pointer to give LSU the lead back for good, 13-12, with 11:46 to go in the first half. Marquel Sutton followed with a bucket with Thomas getting a layup for two more point and Rashad King hitting a triple off a Drake turnover to make the LSU lead, 20-12 with 9:48 to go in the first 20 minutes.

Later in the half, LSU was up 23-17 with 7:02 to play and LSU posted another 10-0 run as following layups by King and Pablo Tamba, Mike Nwoko scored LSU’s next six points to push the advantage to 33-17 with 4:12 to go before halftime.

LSU would lead, 71-62, at the half.

Drake made a couple of runs at LSU in the second half, closing to within six points with 52 seconds left, but the Tigers, despite their worst night of the season from the line, made the ones that counted toward the end to send LSU to 6-0 for the first time since the 2021-22 season, the last year the Tigers were in and captured the championship of the Emerald Coast Classic.

Thomas had 18 points and five assists to lead LSU, with Nwoko finishing with 14 points and Max Mackinnon 11 points and four assists.

Jalen Reed left the game late in the second half with what described as a potential ankle issue, but no details were available after the contest.

Jalen Quinn scored 20 to lead Drake with Jaehshon Thomas getting 16 and Griffen Goodbary 10. Drake drops to 4-3 on the young season.

LSU shot 46.4 percent for the game (26-of-56), but just 5-of-19 from distance (26.3%). LSU was 14-of-22 from the free throw line. Drake came in at 36.1 percent (22-of-61), making 8-of-30 from deep (26.7%) and a healthy 10-of-13 at the line.

LSU outrebounded Drake, 41-34, and had a 40-20 advantage in points in the paint. LSU led for 38:18 of the contest, while Drake led for 14 seconds.

LSU SPORTS RADIO NETWORK POSTGAME QUOTES

LSU vs Drake
November 28, 2025
LSU Head Coach Matt McMahon
Opening Statement
“I really liked our defensive effort and intensity tonight. I think Drake’s got a really good team. They don’t beat themselves. Defending the three-point shot, we knew was going to be really critical. They made 11 in their win at Charleston the other day. To limit them to 8-of-30 was key for us. Then in the second half, we were 0-of-1 from the free throw line in this first half which has been a strength of ours. Drake is second in the country in fewest free throws allowed. We got there 21 times in the second half on a night where we weren’t shooting it well. I thought that was a big key for us.”
On stopping Drake’s three point shot…
“That’s what we talked about with our players. We expected them to take 30 or more (three-point attempts). We told our players we can’t let them come out and make 12 or 14 of them. I thought our guys did a really good job. We forced their five men to take eleven threes on the night. They are lower percentage guys. I thought that was really important for us. We couldn’t put them away. I thought we had some opportunities there where we’re up 10 or up 12. We miss an open three, we got the offensive rebound and kick it out and miss another open three. We just couldn’t finish them. but it was good for us. We played in five games that weren’t close. To get in some of those situations, we made a big mistake there in the last minute. So we can learn from that and get better. All in all, it’s a good win for us over a really good team. Drake had won their last three SEC games, been to the tournament four years in a row. We’re thankful to win and excited to play again (Saturday).”
