Da Boot Sports 12/22/2024 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU welcomed UNO to the Pete Maravich Assembly Center and then went on to earn a very ugly, 86-70 victory over the Privateers. It was the perfect example of a talented LSU team playing flat and down to their opponents level. They played with very little life or spark against a very bad (2-8) UNO team. LSU shot 32-70 from the floor for 46% in the game. They hit 7-29 three point attempts. At the free throw line, the Tigers sank 15-21 for 71%. They committed 13 turnovers while forcing 9. LSU won the rebound battle, 50-37. Vyctorius Miller led the team with 17 points. Cam Carter finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Corey Chest registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Dji Bailey added 12 points on the day. Jordan Sears finished with 10 points. Damion Collins had 8. Curtis Givins III finished with 7 points. Robert Miller III added 4 while Derek Fountain managed 2 points. The Tigers started slow as they usually do, as UNO took an 8-4 lead at the 17:28 mark forcing Matt McMahon to call a timeout. With 10:55 left in the first half, LSU found themselves down by five, 15-10 to the Volunteers. The Tigers continued there inconsistent, sloppy play over the next three minutes. At the 7:52 official's timeout, UNO led, 19-17, with the quiet PMAC crowd patiently waiting for something to cheer about. In an ugly basketball game, we found things all even at 23-23 with 3:57 left in the first half. A terribly played first half mercifully came to an end with LSU leading 30-29 at the break. LSU shot 41% in the first half along with a miserable 2-16 from behind the three point line. They were 2-4 from the free throw line. The Tigers committed nine turnovers over the first 20 minutes, and won the rebound battle, 24-21. Cam Carter led the team at the break with 9 points. Vyctorius Miller scored 7 points. Dji Bailey finished with 6. Corey Chest added 4 points. Both Curtis Givens III and Daimion Collins both has 2 points each. Nothing changed early in the second half as both teams continued their sloppy play, but the Tigers eventually would outscore UNO, 16-8 to take a 46-38 lead at the 12:59 mark. The Tigers finally took control of the contest, going on a 15-12 run over the next five minutes to lead to 68-50 with 7:58 left on the clock. With 3:42 left in the contest, LSU held a 20 point advantage, 77-57, as the crowd slowly began to make their way to the exits. The Tigers improve to 10-2 as they will now take their Christmas break. Next up, LSU will play Mississippi Valley State on Sunday, December 29 at 6:00 pm in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The Tigers held the Hatters scoreless for roughly 10 minutes to open the game, jumped out to a 17-0 lead, and never looked back. LSU went into the half with a 37-point lead and held Stetson to 10 points in the first half, the fewest points by an LSU opponent in a half since 1959. LSU led by as many as 49 points in the game. LSU improves to 9-2 on the season, while Stetson falls to 1-10. LSU also improves to 6-0 this season when shooting over 50.0 percent, and 7-0 when opponents shoot less than 40.0 percent. The Tigers’ final game before Christmas will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21 against UNO inside the Maravich Center. Cam Carter and Vyctorius Miller led the team with 16 points each. Cater was 6-of-10, including two 3-pointers, and logged three assists and a steal, and Miller was 5-of-8 overall, including a flurry of four triples in the second half. Corey Chest turned in his second double-double in three games with a career-high 13 points (6-of-9) and pulled down 10 rebounds, marking his fifth consecutive game with double-digit rebounds. Dji Bailey had 14 points, and Curtis Givens III had 12 and a team-high six assists with two steals to round out the top scorers for the Tigers. Stetson missed its first 10 shots from the floor, and LSU capitalized by taking a 10-0 lead capped by a 3-pointer from Carter that forced an early timeout for the Hatters at the 14:51 mark. The Tigers’ defense forced a shot clock violation out of the timeout and continued to suffocate the Hatters’ offense as the visiting club went into the under 12-minute media timeout trailing LSU 15-0, shooting 0-of-16 from the field. After Robert Miller made two free throws to stretch the lead to 17, Stetson scored its first field goal with 10:19 on the clock before the Tigers responded with an 8-0 highlighted by triples from Jordan Sears and R. Miller, making the score 25-2 with 7:35 remaining in the half. The Fighting Tigers’ run increased to 12 unanswered points – their second-longest run of the half, and ultimately went into the locker room with a 47-10 lead behind a 30-8 run to end the opening half. LSU shot 50.0 percent from the field (16-of-32), including 40.0 percent from behind the arc (6-of-15), while holding Stetson to a 12.9 field goal percentage on 4-of-31 shooting. Stetson scored eight of the first 11 points in the second half to cut the deficit to 32 points, but that was as close as the margin would get as LSU pushed its lead to 38 after Chest scored his seventh point of the frame, putting LSU ahead 59-21 at the 15:07 media timeout. The Tigers’ largest lead came late in the second half at 99-50 with 1:12 remaining to play as they cruised to victory, outscoring the Hatters 52-43 in the second half. LSU finished with a season-high 48 rebounds, highlighted by a season-best 34 defensive rebounds, keeping the Hatters possessions short. The Tigers also outscored the Hatters 19-3 in second-chance points, 42-18 in paint points, 40-20 bench points and 21-1 in fastbreak points. Stetson concluded the game shooting 30.5 percent (18-of-59) from the floor and 32.0 percent from 3-point range (8-of-25). Mehki Ellison led Stetson with 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting and was 4-of-8 from the 3-point line. Jordan Wood added 10 points for the Hatters. Weil FRISCO, TX - The Tigers went on the road to Lone Star State to take on SMU, but unfortunately suffered a tough loss to the Mustangs, 74-64. After leading by six at the half, LSU sputtered in the second half with poor shooting and sloppy ball handling. Give credit to the Mustangs. They were a different team in the second half, owning the paint and dominating LSU in a physical manner. LSU finished shooting 43% from the floor. They only hit 4-15 from behind the three point line, while sinking 14-18 from the free throw line for 78%. Seventeen turnovers haunted the Tigers with 13 of them coming in the second half. The Mustangs out-rebounded LSU, 41-31. Jordan Sears led the Tigers in scoring with 21 points. Dji Bailey added 13 points. Cam Carter finished with 11. Daimion Collins scored 9 points. Corey chest contributed 6 points, while both Millers, Robert and Vyctorius added 2 points each. Both teams played even over the first five minutes of the contest as we sat at a 5-5 tie at the 15:29 media timeout. The Mustangs came out of the timeout with a 7-0 run to take a 12-5 lead, but that seemed to wake the Bayou Bengals up, as LSU would respond with a 8-0 run to take the lead, 13-12 at the 12:06 mark. The pace of the game began to speed up as both teams pushed to ball up and down the floor quickly, but both teams would go cold, struggling to sink a basket. At the next official's timeout, LSU held a 17-13 lead with 8:00 minutes left in the first half. Over the next four minutes, LSU would outscore the Mustangs, 11-9 to increase their lead to 28-22 at the 3:51 mark. The Tigers would go into the locker room at the half with a six point lead, 33-27. LSU shot well in the first half, going 13-29 from the floor for 45%. They hit 2-7 from behind the arc for 29%. They sank 5-6 from the charity stripe for 83%. The Tigers only turned the ball over four times in the first half while forcing eight. The Mustangs won the rebound battle over the first 20 minutes, 24-16. Jordan Sears led the team at the break with 12 points. Dji Bailey scored 7. Cam Carter, Daimion Collins and Corey Chest all added 4 points each and Robert Miller III finished with 2 points. LSU started the second half with sloppy play, turning the ball over often and allowing SMU to score easy baskets in the paint. The Mustangs out-raced LSU with an 8-2 run to tie the contest at 35-35, forcing Matt McMahon to call a timeout at the 17:28 mark. SMU shifted into another gear and exploded out to an eight point lead, 47-39, forcing a LSU timeout with 12:33 left in the contest. After only committing four turnovers in the first half, LSU turned the ball over ten times in the first eight minutes of the second half to contribute to the Mustangs' surge. The Mustangs remained in control with a 57-49 lead with 7:41 left on the clock. The big story of the second half so far was LSU's 13 turnovers. The sloppy play helped fuel the SMU dominating run. But as they have done all season, this LSU team showed no quit. The Tigers battled back to cut the lead to five, 64-59 with 3:35 left in the game. With 57 seconds left, the Tigers trailed by four, 68-64. But SMU did what they needed to do to hold LSU off for the win. The Tigers are now 8-2 on the season.
