LSU vs Southern Miss

December 29, 2025
Post-game quotes

   LSU Head Coach Matt McMahon

Opening Statement…
“As we wrap 2025, I want to acknowledge several members of our program who earned their college degrees. Rashad King, Pablo Tamba, Marquel Sutton, Jaden Bobbett and PJ Carter. Then we had two managers – Peyton Bourgeois and Kobe Haynes. I’m really proud of those guys and wanted all seven of them to earn their college degrees; five of them are working on another degree and one of them is working on his third degree.
As for the game – I’m a big believer in that you’re going to play the way you practice. I thought our guys came back from Christmas break hungry. There was some disappointment and some things that happened on the defensive side of the ball in our last game before the break and our guys did a good job of taking that challenge tonight to hold Southern Miss to 30% from the floor and 20% from three. We played with great unselfishness on offense with 19 assists and only six turnovers. It was another balanced attack from an offensive standpoint. Great win and a great way to wrap up 2025. Now we’re excited for the opportunities ahead as we start SEC play this weekend.”
On having 19 team assists on 32 shots made tonight…
“It was key for us tonight. But we know that as we go to Texas A&M on Saturday, Coach (Bucky) McMillan is always going to have a top 5 or top 10 team in America in forcing turnovers, so it’s going to be a critical stat again on Friday. Southern Miss gave us a good test from the standpoint of mixing the defenses; you saw them play man (coverage), mix their ball screen coverage, 1-3-1, 2-3, and press coverages. I thought DJ (LSU Guard Dedan Thomas Jr.) really did a great job diagnosing what was happening on the floor. When we were able to get stops, we were able to get out in transition, and I think that’s where we can really flourish from an efficiency standpoint. All in all, ball security was really good. We gave up a few too many second shots; we need to clean that up. Overall, we’re pleased with the team effort.”
      On Mike Nwoko’s career-high five blocks tonight…
“Probably my favorite stat of the game. He’s been so good offensively since he got here and he keeps getting better every time out. You see the connection that he and DJ have on the different ball screen coverages and roll opportunities. He’s scoring it so efficiently, but we’ve really challenged him to provide that rim presence for us. I’m sure this was a season-high in blocks for us tonight, but it all started with Mike. He was aggressive coming over and fixing some things that went wrong for us on the defensive end. I thought he was fantastic on both ends of the court, and that’s what we’re going to need as we go into SEC play.”

Junior Guard Dedan Thomas Jr.

On the dominant defensive performance as a team…
“The coaches were really on us, but credit to them (Southern Mississippi) though, they made some really big shots and they really pushed us so just this whole week after the Christmas break, we just knew that we definitely had to prove that we’re actually a really good defensive team if we just play up to our potential, so I feel like we played a lot better guarding the three especially.”
On taking advantages of his three-point shooting opportunities…
“I know how hard I work. I’m still very confident in my ability to shoot the three ball and (LSU Forward) Mike (Nwoko) even gets mad at me when I don’t shoot it. I mean I feel like I put in a lot of work in my three-point shot. The coaches are confident in me and my teammates are confident in me so I feel like I just put too much work in not to shoot threes more so I’m going to keep shooting them, just staying confident in my shot so it’s going to fall.”

Junior Forward Mike Nwoko

On having a career high in blocks…
“I was just jumping to be honest. I kind of just went up and blocked the ball there really wasn’t much too it; and shout out to my guys they really put me in a position to go up and block those shots. They weren’t following so I was able to go up there and get the ball and block it.”
On the overall assessment of the team going into SEC play…
“I’m very confident heading into SEC play for sure. Being one of the few guys that was on an SEC team last year, I definitely warned these guys a whole lot about ‘hey, the real deal is coming’, but being with these guys day in and day out for the whole summer and this whole season, I definitely know we’re ready so I’m excited about that.”

BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU returned home to the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Friday night and defeated the Southeastern Louisiana Lions, 78-65. It wasn't a flashy or dominating win, it was just a decent non-conference victory by the Tigers. Hats off to SLU as they came to Baton Rouge and played very well all game long to keep the contest respectable.

LSU finished the night shooting 54% from the floor. They hit 9-22 from behind the arc for 41%. At the free throw line, they sank 19-27 for 70%. The rebound battle ended in a 29-29 tie. LSU turned the ball over eight times while forcing SLU into nine.

LSU would take a 50-36 lead into the locker room at the half against a very pesky Southeastern Louisiana team.

The Tigers shot the ball well in the first half sinkin 16-27 from the field for 59%. They hit 6-14 from behind the three point arc for 43%. From the charity stripes, LSU sank 12-14 for 86%.    Both teams sputtered offensively over the first four minutes of the second half, with LSU holding a 54-40 advantage at the 15:59 media timeout.

At the 12:00 mark, LSU found themselves up, 61-48.

Over the next three minutes, the game slowed down offensively, as the Tigers led, 65-57 at the 8:00 official's timeout.

LSU would make the big basket when needed to help remain in control against the scrappy Lions, but SLU would not allow the Tigers to pull away for an impressive win. With 3:45 remaining, LSU held a 72-60 advantage.

With the win, LSU improves to 10-1. Next up the Tigers will host Prairie View on Monday, December 22. Tipoff is set for 6 pm and will be televised on the SEC Network.

LSU vs SMU

December 13, 2025
LSU Head Coach Matt McMahon
Opening Statement
“I’m really proud of our players. We pushed them pretty good this week at practice to get some things corrected. We really just wanted to get back to the identity of what makes us a good team. Obviously, Max Mackinnon’s performance shooting the ball was phenomenal, going 6/7 from three, but our identity has been in the paint. We scored 50 points in the paint tonight. That’s who we are. I was really proud of our effort there. I thought a big key to the game was, a week ago we had three five men, Jalen Reed, Mike Nwoko, and Rob Miller. Well, Jalen is obviously out for the season, Mike got two fouls in the first two minutes of the game, and Rob got two fouls in the first six minutes of the game. So, we were playing Marquel Sutton at the five and Pablo Tamba at the four for essentially the whole first half. I just thought they were warriors. Both of them go for a double-double. Pablo had 14 and 10. Marquel had 23 and 12. I thought they were awesome.”

On Pablo Tamba…

“Well, his versatility defensively really helps us. We’re able to switch a lot with him and put him on the other team’s best player. I thought he was terrific. He gets three offensive rebounds. Then, you saw him get out in transition tonight and run the floor. DJ (Dedan Thomas Jr.) found him for a couple of breakaway lay ups. His energy, and I just always believe this, when you get guys like that, it becomes contagious. Guys just play hard every possession. He’s all about the team. He just wants to help his team win. I couldn’t be more proud of his performance here tonight.”
