Da Boot Sports 3/11/2026 By: Terrill J. Weil NASHVILLE, TN - LSU played Kentucky tough in the first round of the SEC Tournament in Nashville, but fell short, 87-82. LSU shot 50% from the field on the day. They hit 5-20 from three point land for 25%. At the free throw line they sank 13-20 for 65%. LSU out-rebounded Kentucky, 35-33. Mackinnon led the team with 28 points. Nwoko added 16. Sutton and Reece finished with 11 points each. King scored 7 points. Tamba had 6 and Carter finished with 3 points. The Tigers began with physical play early, taking a 4-0 lead. Kentucky answered quickly to tie the game at 4-4. The contest became an early shoot out with both teams trading baskets and the lead. At the 14:49 media timeout, Kentucky led, 11-10. Both teams continued to trade baskets and the lead in a very well played game up to this point. Kentucky held an 18-17 lead at the 11:06 official's timeout. Over the next six minutes, Kentucky would out-score LSU 19-14 to extend their lead to 37-32. The Tigers were able to cut the Wildcats' lead to two, 41-39 at the 1:21 mark. With LSU trailing 46-40 with 12 seconds left in the half, Max Mackinnon hit a three pointer at the buzzer, cutting Kentucky's lead to 46-43 at halftime. LSU shot 48% from the field in the first half. They sank 5-11 from behind the arc for 45%. At the charity stripe they hit 6-8 for 75%. Kentucky led in rebounds, 17-16 in the first half. LSU committed four first half turnovers while Kentucky had two. Nwoko led the team at the break with 13 points. Mackinnon scored 10. Sutton finished with 7 points. Reece added 4. Tamba, King and Carter all contributed 3 points each. LSU came out in the second half with high energy and grabbed the momentum, out-scoring Kentucky 11-7 to take the lead, 54-53 at the 15:12 mark. Both teams began to trade baskets and the lead again over the next three minutes. At the 11:48 media timeout, the Wildcats led, 64-62. Kentucky came out of the timeout and went on a quick 7-2 run, forcing Matt McMahon to call a timeout. 71-64, Wildcats at the 9:56 mark. Two minutes later the Wildcats extended their lead to ten, 75-65 at the 7:44 media timeout. The Tigers simply didn't have enough fire power to pull off the upset, as Kentucky made the plays late and LSU didn't. LSU finished the season with a 15-17 record. So the 2025-26 basketball season comes to an official end. Everyone should expect changes to be made in the program soon. *John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life.
