Da Boot Sports 1/29/2025 By: Jason Watson Jr. BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU played host to the #1 Auburn Tigers in a matchup of SEC big cats. No matter what, the Tigers were coming out on top, but unfortunately for the home crowd, it was the visiting team that came out on top in an 87-74 triumph. It marked the first time this season that LSU would lose when scoring 74 or more in a game. LSU was ignited by a fiery start on the defensive front holding Auburn scoreless for nearly three minutes out of the gate. The Tigers jumped to a 6-0 lead before the top-ranked team responded with back-to-back buckets. Costly turnovers allowed Auburn to keep within striking distance of the lead, but efficient shooting and relentless effort from the LSU frontcourt led the Tigers to a 16-14 lead midway through the first half. A flagrant-one foul against LSU’s Cam Carter pushed the momentum meter in Auburn’s favor as they went on a 12-0 run before a Jordan Sears fast break layup halted the scoring drought. LSU would enter the bonus with 6:16 remaining in the half but struggled to find a reliable option on the offensive side. Although having better shooting splits than Auburn, LSU was being out-rebounded heavily. The Tigers also had double the turnovers of Auburn. With less than three minutes to play in period one, LSU trailed 33-24. A poor finish to the first half from Matt McMahon’s squad allowed Auburn to move out to a 12-point advantage at the break. LSU’s struggles with turnovers continued with a woeful 15 through the first 20 minutes of play. Auburn had 22 more shot attempts than LSU after the first period… hard to beat the top-ranked team in the nation with that kind of advantage given. Seven minutes into the first period, Auburn was forced into a timeout after LSU went on a 12-5 run of their own, cutting the deficit to just five. With 11:56 to go in the game, Auburn had reached the limit for team fouls giving LSU the green light to be aggressive and attack the inside paint. As the second period progressed, the lead stretched and shrunk like an accordion. Every time LSU made a small run, it seemed Auburn had an answer. Too many wasted opportunities from the charity stripe and an inability to box out around the glass proved to be LSU’s Achilles heel throughout the second period. LSU would eventually succumb to the top-ranked Auburn Tigers in a valiant effort. Next up, LSU will host the Texas Longhorns in a battle of teams fighting for a March Madness tournament spot. After dropping six of its last seven since beginning conference play, Saturday’s contest is one the Tigers certainly cannot afford to drop. Geaux Tigers!
