Da Boot Sports 12/14/2024 By: Terrill J. Weil FRISCO, TX - The Tigers went on the road to Lone Star State to take on SMU, but unfortunately suffered a tough loss to the Mustangs, 74-64. After leading by six at the half, LSU sputtered in the second half with poor shooting and sloppy ball handling. Give credit to the Mustangs. They were a different team in the second half, owning the paint and dominating LSU in a physical manner. LSU finished shooting 43% from the floor. They only hit 4-15 from behind the three point line, while sinking 14-18 from the free throw line for 78%. Seventeen turnovers haunted the Tigers with 13 of them coming in the second half. The Mustangs out-rebounded LSU, 41-31. Jordan Sears led the Tigers in scoring with 21 points. Dji Bailey added 13 points. Cam Carter finished with 11. Daimion Collins scored 9 points. Corey chest contributed 6 points, while both Millers, Robert and Vyctorius added 2 points each. Both teams played even over the first five minutes of the contest as we sat at a 5-5 tie at the 15:29 media timeout. The Mustangs came out of the timeout with a 7-0 run to take a 12-5 lead, but that seemed to wake the Bayou Bengals up, as LSU would respond with a 8-0 run to take the lead, 13-12 at the 12:06 mark. The pace of the game began to speed up as both teams pushed to ball up and down the floor quickly, but both teams would go cold, struggling to sink a basket. At the next official's timeout, LSU held a 17-13 lead with 8:00 minutes left in the first half. Over the next four minutes, LSU would outscore the Mustangs, 11-9 to increase their lead to 28-22 at the 3:51 mark. The Tigers would go into the locker room at the half with a six point lead, 33-27. LSU shot well in the first half, going 13-29 from the floor for 45%. They hit 2-7 from behind the arc for 29%. They sank 5-6 from the charity stripe for 83%. LSU started the second half with sloppy play, turning the ball over often and allowing SMU to score easy baskets in the paint. The Mustangs out-raced LSU with an 8-2 run to tie the contest at 35-35, forcing Matt McMahon to call a timeout at the 17:28 mark. SMU shifted into another gear and exploded out to an eight point lead, 47-39, forcing a LSU timeout with 12:33 left in the contest. After only committing four turnovers in the first half, LSU turned the ball over ten times in the first eight minutes of the second half to contribute to the Mustangs' surge. The Mustangs remained in control with a 57-49 lead with 7:41 left on the clock. The big story of the second half so far was LSU's 13 turnovers. The sloppy play helped fuel the SMU dominating run. But as they have done all season, this LSU team showed no quit. The Tigers battled back to cut the lead to five, 64-59 with 3:35 left in the game. With 57 seconds left, the Tigers trailed by four, 68-64. But SMU did what they needed to do to hold LSU off for the win. The Tigers are now 8-2 on the season.
