BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU returned home and were unfortunately unable to rebound from their loss in College Station, as they fell to South Carolina, 78-68 in front of 6,303 Tiger fans.

LSU trailed by as much as 28 points in the first half and faced a 25 point deficit at the half. The Tigers did a great job of fighting back to get as close as six late in the contest, but ran out of gas.

The Bayou Bengals only shot 39% from the field for the game. They hit 8-25 from three point land for 32%. They sank 12-14 from the free throw line for 86%. LSU out-rebounded the Gamecocks, 42-30. South Carolina committed six total turnovers while LSU had 14.
Mackinnon led the Tigers with 15 points. Carter and Tamba scored 10 points each. Miller added 9. Mosley, Nwoko and Sutton contributed 6 points each. King finished with 4 points and Reese had 2 points.

The Tigers started slow, missing their first six shots of the game, allowing South Carolina to go on a 10-0 run. An angry Matt McMahon called a timeout at the 16:58 mark.

The Gamecocks continued to pour it on the ice cold Bayou Bengals, outscoring the home team, 11-5 over the next two minutes. At the 14:42 official's timeout, South Carolina now led, 21-5. The Gamecocks had yet to miss a shot. hitting 8-8 from the floor and 5-5 from behind the three point arc, while LSU was a dismal, 2-12 from the field.

At the 11:44 media timeout, South Carolina held an 18 point advantage, 28-10.

LSU remained lifeless on offense with sloppy ball handling and poor shooting, while the Gamecocks remained on fire, extending their lead to 35-10 with 8:48 left in the first half.

Stunned LSU fans watched quietly as the rout continued. With 3:54 left in the half, LSU trailed, 43-15.

Without a doubt, it was the worse half of basketball that LSU has played all season. The Gamecocks took a 50-25 lead into the locker room at the half. South Carolina shot 52% from the field and hit 10-13 three point attempts over the first 20 minutes.

LSU only shot 8-28 from the field for 29%. They sank 4-12 from behind the arc for 33%. They hit 5-6 from the charity stripe for 83%. South Carolina also won the rebound battle in the first half, 19-17. The Gamecocks had only two turnovers while LSU committed nine.
Robert Miller led the team at the break with 4 points. Mazi Mosley, PJ Carter, Max Mackinnon, Rashad King and Pablo Tamba all scored 3 points each. Marquel Sutton, Jalen Reece and Mike Nwoko added 2 points each. Do the Tigers have it in them to make a serious run in the second half?

LSU finally showed signs of life to begin the second half, going on a 10-2 run, trimming the Carolina lead to, 52-35, forcing a timeout by the Gamecocks at the 17:34 mark.

The Tigers electrified the crowd by going on a 11-1 run to cut the lead to ten, 58-48 with 12:02 remaining in the contest.

LSU refused to quit, battling back to cut the South Carolina advantage to nine, 64-55 at the 7:23 mark.

With 3:56 remaining, South Carolina led, 70-62. Simply not enough in the tank to complete the comeback.

This was a very tough and disappointing loss at home for the Tigers.

LSU has now dropped two straight, falling to 12-3 overall and 0-2 in SEC play. Next up the Tigers will travel to Nashville to play #11 Vanderbilt on Saturday, January 10 at 12:00 pm CST. The game will be televised on the SEC Network.
