LSU improves its record to 15-0, while UCLA falls to 14-3. The win marks the second consecutive season that LSU has defeated a top-five nationally ranked team and is the fifth top-5 victory in four seasons. “I think we were prepared,” said Head Coach Beth Torina. “Syd Berzon did a ton of homework and was excited about this game. The team was able to roll with the punches as they came. Offensively, sometimes, we got into some counts that we didn’t like, but we did not let it affect us. We answered back and were able to hit no matter the count or what spots we were in because we were confident in our plan.” Pitcher Sydney Berzon (6-0) turned in her 40th career win in the circle after striking out four batters and giving up five hits, one run and one walk in 7.0 innings. UCLA’s Kaitlyn Terry (8-2) received the loss after tossing 6.0 innings, where she struck out four batters and surrendered seven hits, two runs and two walks. LSU (9-0) run-ruled No. 21/22 Northwestern (4-5), 8-0 in five innings in its first game of the day and defeated No. 17/18 Virginia Tech (8-1), 7-2, to conclude the day. “Many of the things we have worked on are paying off. It’s always really fun to see that,” said Head Coach Beth Torina. “I feel like how we are running the bases and being aggressive is stifling. At times, other teams feel that pressure and create mistakes that may be out of character for them. It's fun to see our team play like that.” The Tigers’ pitching staff ended the day with a 1.17 ERA behind 12 strikeouts and held opposing batters to a .167 batting average. As a unit, the staff gave up seven hits, four walks and two runs in 12.0 innings. Pitchers Sydney Berzon and Jayden Heavener threw complete games and improved to 3-0 in the circle. Berzon logged her second complete game shutout of the season and the ninth of her career in game one against Northwestern, and Heavener earned her first career victory over a top-25 team. LSU’s bats continued to stay hot, producing 15 runs on 23 hits, 11 RBI, and a .469 batting average. The Tigers also had five extra-base hits on the day, including three doubles, a triple and a home run. Outfielder Jadyn Laneaux led the team with a 4-for-4 performance and had two RBI. Catcher Maci Bergeron also batted 1.000, going 3-for-3 at the plate, highlighted by a two-run home run, had three RBI, and drew four walks on the day. Utility player Tori Edwards and outfielders Jalia Lassiter and McKenzie Redoutey all batted .500 with 3-for-6 days. Lassiter scored a team-high three runs, and Redoutey matched Bergeron’s three RBI. Game One: Berzon (3-0) opened her two-hit shutout by striking out five batters and gave up just one hit and one walk in the first three frames against Northwestern. She finished with seven strikeouts and surrendered two walks in her second shutout of the season. NU’s Lauren Boyd (1-2) received the loss after giving up six runs on six hits and had one strikeout in 1.1 innings. LSU matched a season-high 12 hits for the second consecutive game, led by Edwards, infielder Avery Hodge (2-for-2), and Lassiter, who all had two hits. Redoutey led the way with three RBI. Redoutey picked up where she left off on day one, cashing in on a two-run double in the opening inning to put the Tigers on the board. In the second, LSU scored four runs on five hits, highlighted by RBI singles from infielder Danieca Coffey and Edwards. Bergeron walked in a run, and Redoutey’s sac fly made the score 6-0 through two innings. In the third, with Laneaux on second after hitting a double, infielder Avery Hodge (2-for-2) laid down a bunt for a base hit and advanced to an unoccupied second base. As Hodge sprinted to take the base, a NU miscommunication placed the ball deep in center field, and both Laneaux and Hodge touched home plate to make the score 8-0. LSU’s defense allowed just two base runners for the final two innings, and Berzon struck out two more batters to secure the club's sixth shutout this season. Game Two: Heavener (3-0) shut out Virginia Tech for the first five innings and finished the game with five strikeouts, giving up five hits, two runs and two walks in 7.0 innings. VT’s Emma Mazzarone (2-1) relinquished eight hits, five runs (four unearned), two walks, and one strikeout in 3.0 innings. Virginia Tech, who did not give up a run in its first eight games of the season, gave up seven runs and 11 hits in the 7-2 setback versus LSU. Laneaux was 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, and Bergeron registered another multi-hit and RBI game with two hits and ribbies. LSU loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning thanks to singles by Coffey and Bergeron and a hit-by-pitch for Lassiter, but it was Coffey who came home on a throwing error by VT’s center fielder. The Tigers pieced together a two-out rally in the second inning, scoring four runs on four hits to stretch their lead to 5-0. Lassiter laced a pitch to right field to score a runner, Coffey scored on a wild pitch, and with Lassiter sitting on third, Bergeron hit her second home run of the season to cap a four-run inning for the home club. The Fighting Tigers loaded the bases with no outs for the second time in the fourth inning. However, it wasn’t until the Tigers had two outs when Laneaux singled to center field to score two runners, extending LSU’s lead to 7-0. After a scoreless fifth inning, Virginia Tech scored two runs to cut the deficit to five runs in the sixth, but that was all that LSU gave up as the Tigers closed the game in the seventh with a flyout to right field and an unassisted double play by Edwards. Up Next No. 7 LSU will conclude the Purple & Gold Challenge with an 11:30 a.m. CT rematch against No. 17/18 Virginia Tech on Sunday. LSU (7-0) opened the day with a 6-0 win over UT Arlington (4-4) and knocked off No. 21/22 Northwestern (3-4) 7-1 in the nightcap. “I thought today were quality wins against quality opponents,” said Head Coach Beth Torina. “It was two good performances today from our team. I loved what I saw and our response in the second game. We found a way to score runs. Another piece to our offense is not just our swings but how we run the bases and attack opportunities. The way we run the bases and seeing the players buy into what we have been trying to teach them is really fun to see.” The Tigers continued to display strong pitching, registering a 0.50 ERA with 22 strikeouts, and gave up six hits and one run in 14.0 innings pitched. The LSU pitching staff held its opponents to a .133 batting average. Pitcher Tatum Clopton (2-0) logged her first solo shutout as an LSU Tiger, striking out a career-high 10 batters in the first game against UT Arlington. It was LSU’s fifth shutout of the season. Freshman hurler Jayden Heavener (2-0) collected 12 strikeouts against Northwestern, which was the Tigers' first top-25 win of the season. LSU’s offense had things rolling, and it finished the day with a .346 batting average on 18 hits, including a season-high 12 knocks against Northwestern. The Tigers scored 13 runs and had 10 RBI. LSU’s base running added immense pressure on the opposing teams, scoring three runs on four throwing errors. Infielder Danieca Coffey (.800) led the Tigers by going 4-for-5 at the plate and scored a team-best four runs. Outfielder McKenzie Redoutey (.571) was 4-for-7 at the dish and drove in four runs. Game One In the first five innings, Clopton (2-0) retired 11 of UT Arlington’s first 15 batters and struck out the side in the third and fifth innings. The junior's 10 strikeouts mark a career-high, overtaking her five punchouts against Cal Baptist on Feb. 12, 2022. UT Arlington’s pitcher Jessica Adams (1-1) was charged the loss after allowing six runs on six hits with three walks on two strikeouts thrown in 6.0 innings. The Tigers put up three runs in the first and fifth frames. In a four-hit first inning, LSU plated three runs courtesy of utility player Tori Edwards' two-run double and outfielder McKaela Walker’s run-scoring single. The Bayou Bengals increased its margin in the bottom of the fifth inning after Hodge drew a leadoff walk and advanced home behind two consecutive throwing errors by the Maverick defenders. Coffey also reached base on balls and stole second before outfielder Jalia Lassiter doubled down the left field line to score her. Pinch runner Maia Townsend took over for Lassiter on the base pads and was brought home on a single by Redoutey, stretching LSU’s advantage to 6-0 through five innings. LSU’s defense ended the UTA threat in the sixth inning with a double play and sent the Mavericks out in order to secure the shutout in the seventh. Game Two Heavener (2-0) overcame a shaky start, walking four batters in the first two innings. She concluded with 12 strikeouts and surrendered four hits, one run and five walks. Half of LSU’s season-high 12 hits came from Coffey (3-for-3) and Redoutey (3-for-4). Redoutey led the way with three RBI, and Coffey was the team leader, scoring two runs. Hodge also had a multi-hit game with two hits and scored one run. Northwestern's pitcher Riley Grudzielanek (1-3) was handed the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits, four walks and two strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched. Northwestern opened the game with a run-off of a sacrifice fly in the first inning, but LSU responded by scoring seven unanswered runs in the second through fourth stanzas. In the bottom of the second frame, Maddox McKee laced a ball to center field for a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Moments later, Savannah Bedell drove in the tying run on a single to third base. After Heavener struck out the side in the top of the third, LSU scraped three runs on a hit and two errors, highlighted by Redoutey’s RBI single, to take a 4-1 advantage through three innings. The LSU bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring three runs off four hits. Catcher Maci Bergeron roped a ball to left field to plate a run with the bases loaded, and Redoutey struck again with a two-RBI single for a 7-1 Tiger lead. The Fighting Tigers kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard, led by Heavener’s seven strikeouts from the fourth inning on and a double play by the defense to end the game. LSU (5-0) has walked off the Southeastern (2-3) for the second consecutive season after Karli Petty hit a three-run blast in the eighth inning last season at Tiger Park. “They [Southeastern Louisiana] are a good team,” said Head Coach Beth Torina. “Every time we play them, it is a game like this. They do a good job; he [Head Coach Rick Fremin] has all new personnel, yet they play the game the same way. I think that is the mark of a good coach. His standard is the standard no matter what personnel he has on the field. They do a great job.” Southeastern had two runners in scoring position with two outs in the top of the seventh when left fielder Jadyn Laneaux made an over-the-shoulder catch to save the game and give LSU a chance to walk it off with the score tied, 2-2. In the bottom of the seventh, shortstop Avery Hodge drew a walk, and third baseman Danieca Coffey’s bunt single put two runners on with no outs. Both advanced to second and third base, respectively, after a sacrifice bunt by center fielder Jalia Lassiter, and catcher Maci Bergeron tallied the second walk of the inning to load the bases. That’s when Edwards stepped to the plate, fought her way to a full count, and lifted the next pitch deep enough to center field to score Hodge for the win. “I felt that it was a cool moment for Tori Edwards in her maturing process,” said Coach Torina. “She swung through the change-up earlier in the at-bat and was forced to deal with that again. It was cool to see the adjustment that she made. She is wise beyond her years. She studied and was prepared. She is not just up there making big swings - although it may look like that. She is extremely calculated. To see her make that adjustment is not super surprising, but nice to see her hard work pay off.” LSU was outhit by Southeastern, 6-3, and the Tigers’ three runs were scored on two sac flies from Edwards and right fielder McKenzie Redoutey and an RBI walk by designated player McKaela Walker. Bergeron, Coffey and Lassiter recorded LSU’s three hits. Pitcher Sydney Berzon improved to 2-0 in the circle and tossed a complete game. She struck out four batters and surrendered six hits and one earned run. “We gave up two or three balls out of the infield, including Jadyn Laneaux’s catch. It is just another day where Sydney is being Sydney,” said Coach Torina.” “Southeastern has a tough offense with all the lefties and the slappers. They are not up there trying to swing through stuff. They are trying to challenge your defense and put stuff in play. It may have been a tougher match-up for Sydney, who is going to change speeds and try to keep big-swinging people off balance, but she is Sydney. She finds a way to win, no matter the situation.” SLU’s pitcher Hallie Burns (0-2) was given the loss after entering the game in relief and giving up three walks, two hits, and the final run with no strikeouts in 1.2 innings. Pitcher Britney Lewinski started for the Lady Lions and threw five shutout innings before getting pulled in the sixth after walking two batters. Lewinski had one strikeout in the game, walked four batters and gave up just one hit. After four scoreless innings, Southeastern got on the board with a run-scoring single by second baseman Shelby Morris in the top of the fifth and shut down a rally attempt in the bottom half after turning its second double play of the game. The Lady Lions extended their lead, 2-0, thanks to an RBI single up the middle by pinch hitter Brilee Ford in the sixth. Coffey and Lassiter drew walks in the bottom of the sixth, and Bergeron singled to left field to load the bases with no outs. SLU recorded the first out with a foul flyout, but Redoutey brought home Coffey on a sacrifice fly to put LSU on the board, 2-1. A pitch hit second baseman Maddox McKee to load the bags again, and Walker walked in Lassiter to tie the game, 2-2 heading into the final inning. The Tigers defeated Charlotte (1-1) 8-0 in six innings, and Central Arkansas (1-1) 10-0 in five. LSU improved to 25-4 in season-opening games since 1997 and extended its streak to 11 wins in such contests. Heavener’s collegiate debut became the program’s sixth perfect game in team history and first since Maribeth Gorsuch’s seven-inning perfect game against Belmont on Feb. 22, 2020. Friday night was the third perfect game under head coach Beth Torina and the first LSU pitcher to do it in their first game. The left-handed pitcher fanned 13 batters. “I was over at third base, and we were about to end the game. I thought to myself, what a storybook moment it was,” said Head Coach Beth Torina. “The theme this year is about writing a book, and I was just thinking about what a moment we have with this incredible player. She comes out – everybody has been waiting for this moment – and she throws a perfect game in her first time out here at Tiger Park. It was an incredible day for the team.” Berzon followed with her eighth career shutout with five strikeouts and held the opposing Central Arkansas batters to a .118 batting average in 5.0 innings. At the plate, LSU batted .457 on 21 hits, had 16 RBI and scored 18 runs. In her return, Danieca Coffey hit .750, going 3-for-4 at the dish, and had team-highs of three RBI and three runs. Maddox McKee (.667) paced the team with four hits, and McKaela Walker turned in a .600 batting average on three hits and scored three runs. Maci Bergeron’s 2-for-3 day was capped by the season’s first home run. Bergeron also drew a team-best four walks. “The offense did a great job,” said Coach Torina. “Postgame, the coaches complimented them on their effective base-running. I think our speed played a factor, as we had hoped. The way they ran the bases set the tone for the season and who they want to be. Obviously, we had some big swings mixed in there as well.” Game One It was all Heavener (1-0) in game one as she struck out 13 Charlotte Miners in 6.0 innings and struck out the side three times. Six of her first seven strikeouts were swinging, and she concluded the game with 10 total swinging strikeouts. Offensively, LSU tallied 10 hits. Coffey, Tori Edwards and Walker had two hits, and Coffey, McKee and Walker had two RBI. In the opening inning, Coffey picked up where she left off last season with a leadoff single, increasing her hitting streak to 11 games. Coffey scored the game’s first run from second base off an RBI single by Edwards, and McKee’s sacrifice fly gave LSU an early 2-0 lead over Charlotte. After two scoreless frames, Jalia Lassiter’s run-scoring double plated Coffey in the fourth. LSU busted the game open in the fifth with three runs that featured back-to-back RBI singles by McKee and Walker, respectively and a sac fly by Coffey. LSU put the game away in the bottom of the sixth after Walker’s RBI double down the left field line, and Coffey walked in a run to secure the season-opening run-rule, 8-0. Game Two LSU’s bats stayed consistent in game two, logging 11 hits in the 10-0 five-inning win over Central Arkansas. McKee went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored three runs, and Sierra Daniel was 2-for-2 with two RBI in her first start of the season. After Berzon (1-0) recorded her first two strikeouts of the game in the top of the second inning, the offense came through in the bottom half with three runs. McKee and Walker singled, and both were in scoring position when Avery Hodge brought them home on a two-RBI single to right field. Daniel continued to pass the bat with a single to advance Hodge to third, and Coffey ended the streak of five consecutive singles, scoring Hodge to build a 3-0 lead for the home team. Berzon retired UCA’s first 11 batters before giving up consecutive singles in the fourth frame. However, the offense backed her up by putting up a seven-piece in the bottom of the inning, capped by a two-run shot by Bergeron, the team’s first home run. LSU retired UCA’s batters in order, ending with a strikeout by Berzon, her fifth of the game. Berzon retired 15 of the 17 batters she faced.
