Da Boot Sports 3/16/2025 LSU Sports Communications By: Keonte Herrera BATON ROUGE, La. – Catcher Maci Bergeron had a career day with two home runs and five RBI, and the fourth-ranked LSU Tigers swept No. 23 Kentucky after winning the series finale, 8-2 on Sunday afternoon at Tiger Park. LSU (27-1, 3-0 SEC) sweeps Kentucky (17-10, 3-3 SEC) in its SEC opening series for the second consecutive season and improves to 50-19 in the all-time series. For just the second time this season, LSU was outhit by its opponent (9-6). Still, the Tigers’ hits were timely and lethal, highlighted by two late homers by Bergeron and utility player Tori Edwards in the sixth inning. Bergeron was 2-for-4 at the plate, with both hits leaving the ballpark, bringing her total to seven home runs this season. Edwards belted her team-leading 11th homer this season. Infielder Avery Hodge had a 2-for-3 outing, marking her sixth time in eight games that the junior transfer has registered multiple hits. “Three total and two three-run home runs this weekend is pretty incredible,” said Head Coach Beth Torina. “Really incredible performance by Maci [Bergeron]. After the game as a team, we discussed that this is something she has worked hard for two and a half years now. She conducts herself like a professional in practice. She has worked for this moment and is deserving of moments like this. Incredible weekend for Maci.” Pitcher Sydney Berzon moves to 12-0 on the season after working her 11th complete game, where she fanned four batters and allowed nine hits, two runs and one walk. Berzon picked up all three wins in the series and had a 0.91 ERA as she surrendered only two earned runs and had nine strikeouts in 15.1 innings pitched. “The defense did well,” said Coach Torina. “I think Sydney needs people to play defense behind her. She throws a ton of ground balls. Our defense played well behind her all weekend long. They are a big reason we were able to come away with this sweep.” UK’s pitcher Julie Kelley (3-2) received the loss in the circle. Kelly had the Wildcats’ only strikeout of the day and gave up three runs (one unearned) on two hits and walked two batters. The Tigers scored at the bottom of the first when Edwards’ groundout scored infielder Danieca Coffey, who drew a leadoff walk. In the third, Coffey led off the inning with a double, and two batters later, Bergeron smacked her second homer of the series to give LSU a 3-0 lead. Kentucky crossed a run in the top of the fourth, but LSU got it back in the bottom half after scoring on a throwing error with the bases loaded to keep its three-run lead, 4-1 after four innings. After a scoreless fifth inning, LSU blew the game open in the sixth with four runs on three hits, including back-to-back home runs from Bergeron and Edwards. Bergeron hit her second three-run shot of the weekend, and Edwards had the finishing touches with a solo shot to right center, extending the Tigers’ lead to 8-1. Kentucky’s infielder Ally Hutchins had a leadoff single in the seventh and scored on infielder Lauryn Borzilleri’s double to put another run on the board, but Berzon struck out the next batter, caught a comeback liner, and the final batter grounded out to the shortstop to end the game with an 8-2 victory. Up Next LSU travels to Athens, Ga. For a three-game series at No. 13 Georgia on March 21-23 at Jack Turner Softball Stadium. John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. Da Boot Sports 3/15/2025 LSU Sports Communications By: Keonte Herrera BATON ROUGE, La. – Utility player Tori Edwards launched a go-ahead two-run moon shot to center field in the sixth inning to lift fourth-ranked LSU over No. 23 Kentucky, 6-4 on Saturday night at Tiger Park. LSU (26-1, 2-0 SEC) clinches its first Top 25 SEC series after a back-and-forth battle with Kentucky (17-9, 3-2 SEC). “I thought the coolest thing about tonight was that we answered every time Kentucky scored,” said Head Coach Beth Torina. “When we were able to answer, it just showed how tough we are. That is one of the things we said we wanted to be when we started the year, and we are proving that we are.” With the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning, outfielder Jalia Lassiter hit a one-out double down the left-center power ally and advanced to third on a passed ball. Edwards boomed one to center field to put LSU ahead for good at 6-4. Sydney Berzon (11-0) secured the win in the circle after throwing 1.1 innings in relief, allowing no runs, hits, or walks against the four batters she faced. Jayden Heavener got the start and worked the first 5.2 innings. Heavener finished with six strikeouts, handed out one free pass, and allowed four runs on six hits. UK’s relief pitcher Alexia Lacatena (6-2) was given the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in the final inning. Sarah Haendiges started in the circle, struck out three batters, and gave up seven hits, four runs, and two walks in 5.0 innings. Both clubs split four home runs evenly. Catcher Maci Bergeron and Edwards each had one hit, which were go-ahead homers in the third and sixth innings, respectively. Bergeron’s three-run blast was her fifth of the season, and Edwards’ game-winning home run was her 10th, accounting for half of the team’s home runs this season. The LSU outfielders had a day at the plate as Jadyn Laneaux, Lassiter and McKenzie Redoutey were 2-for-3. Lassiter logged a game-high two runs in the win. Kentucky’s shortstop Cassie Reasner hit a leadoff homer down the left field line to put the Wildcats ahead 1-0 in the second inning. In the third, infielder Danieca Coffey reached on a fielder’s choice, and Lassiter doubled to put runners in scoring position with one out. Bergeron stepped to the plate and sent a 2-0 pitch deep over the left-center field wall to Tiger Park Terrace, giving LSU a 3-1 lead. The Wildcats scored another run thanks to the longball in the top of the fifth, a solo shot by infielder Ally Hutchins, but the Tigers got the run back in the bottom half inning. After loading the bases with a pair of singles and a hit by pitch, pinch hitter Madyson Manning did her job with an RBI groundout, and LSU ended the fifth with a 4-2 advantage. Kentucky tied the game in the top of the sixth with a two-run single by infielder Madyson Clark, but LSU responded again in the bottom half-inning after UK brought Lacatena out of the bullpen where she gave up two runs on Edwards’ dinger. After recording the final out of the sixth inning, Berzon retired the Wildcats in order in the seventh, with all four of her outs coming on ground outs. Up Next LSU will attempt to sweep Kentucky in the series finale at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday. John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." LSU (25-1, 1-0 SEC) is 24-4 in SEC openers and 20-8 in conference openers at Tiger Park. The win over Kentucky (17-8, 3-1 SEC) gives LSU a 6-0 record against nationally ranked opponents in 2025. Pitcher Sydney Berzon and the LSU defense retired Kentucky’s first six batters, and the Tigers’ offense provided run support immediately. For the fifth consecutive game and sixth time in seven contests, LSU has scored multiple runs in the opening inning, outscoring its opponents 51-3 in the first frame and 52-8 in the second. “I just told the team what it does, how much easier it is to play defense, and all the things that come along with playing with an early lead. The way the offense has started fast every game has been incredible,” said Head Coach Beth Torina. Berzon improved to 10-0 in the circle and threw her 10th complete game. The two-time All-American registered five strikeouts and allowed three hits, one unearned run and two walks. Kentucky’s pitcher Sydney Langdon (1-2) received the loss after surrendering five hits, four runs, three walks and struck out two batters in 2.0 innings. Catcher Maci Bergeron (2-for-2) and utility player Tori Edwards (2-for-3) logged their 10th multi-hit game this season, and both had one run and one RBI in the win. Infielder Avery Hodge was 2-for-3 at the dish, and outfielder McKenzie Redoutey had a team-high two RBI off her second triple of the season. LSU scored three runs on two hits to open the game. With two runners in scoring position, Edwards hit a bloop single to bring in the game’s first run, and Redoutey hit a three-bagger in the left-center gap to bring home two more runs, giving LSU a 3-0 lead. In the second inning with the bases loaded, Bergeron singled through the left side to increase the margin, 4-0 after two frames. Kentucky scratched out a run in the top of the third inning to cut its deficit to 4-1 and shut the Tigers down over the next 4.0 innings with relief pitcher Carson Fall, who finished with two strikeouts and gave up three hits and a walk. LSU’s defense buckled down in the final four innings. Berzon threw four strikeouts and allowed three base runners, and the defense fielded six groundouts in that time span to secure the win. The 14-run thumping is LSU’s (24-1) largest margin of victory against UL Lafayette (13-10), doubling the previous high, a 10-3 win on May 22, 2021. Left-handed hurler Jayden Heavener (7-1) threw all five innings, where she logged six strikeouts and allowed one hit and four walks. Heavener tossed her fourth shutout of the season, and LSU blanked its opponent for the 11th time this year. “She [Jayden Heavener] is confident in her stuff and what she does. She continues to get better. She is locating things better and executing plans better. She is growing every time she takes the mound, which is fun to see.” ULL’s starting pitcher, Bethaney Noble (2-5), survived only 0.1 innings and was pulled after giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits and walking one batter with no strikeouts. For the fourth consecutive game, LSU has scored 10 or more runs in five-inning run-rule victories and has totaled 14 double-digit hit games after finishing with 11 knocks on Tuesday night. Outfielder McKenzie Redoutey was 3-for-3 and scored three runs, infielder Danieca Coffey extended her hitting streak to eight games with a 2-for-2 outing and had two RBI, two walks and a run, and utility player Tori Edwards was 2-for-3 at the plate, including her ninth home run of the season, and had four RBI and two runs. “I think our offense was able to apply pressure throughout the game for a ton of our opponents this year,” said Coach Torina. “We are scoring early and scoring often. I think we have just continued to apply pressure with the at-bats we are having and our base running. We make it hard to play defense against us and pitch against us.” LSU's first-inning dominance continued, scoring six runs on four hits and one ULL error in the opening frame. Coffey drew a leadoff walk, and catcher Maci Bergeron put them both in scoring position with a double down the right-field line. Edwards singled up the middle to bring home both runners. After an early pitching change, LSU scored four more runs, featuring Coffey’s two-run ground-rule double to cap a 6-0 inning. LSU has outscored its opponents 48-3 in the first inning this season. LSU scored two runs in the second stanza with an RBI double from outfielder Jadyn Laneaux and an RBI single from infielder Sierra Daniel to increase the lead to 8-0. The Tigers went scoreless in the third but blew the roof off in the sixth with six more runs on three hits and two ULL errors. Edwards got the party started with a two-run blast to left field. Redoutey, who singled after Edwards’ shot, eventually scored an unearned run on a wild pitch, infielder Avery Hodge hit a run-scoring single, and outfielder Jalia Lassiter registered her second sacrifice fly of the season to wrap up the inning with a 14-0 advantage. The defense dominated the entire game as only one of the few Ragin’ Cajun baserunners reached third base, which happened in the first inning, and had a stretch where they retired six consecutive batters. LSU (23-1) picked up its third consecutive five-inning run-rule victory and second against Minnesota (11-12). The Tigers are now on a three-game winning streak when playing the Golden Gophers. The Fighting Tigers continue to swing the bat well, collecting 12 hits to score 10 runs. LSU has recorded 13 games with double-digit hits this season, including two this weekend. All nine starters for the Tigers reached base safely, including four players with two hits. “The offense put down a bunch of words on what they wanted to be,” said Head Coach Beth Torina. “One of the words was suffocating, and I think we’ve done a good job applying pressure in all ways. Whether it’s a big swing or a bunt, they’ve applied consistent pressure well. Today, we did it against a really good arm. The starter from Minnesota is really good. It’s nice to see us live up to that against a good arm.” Infielder Avery Hodge was 2-for-3, highlighted by her second triple in as many games, and had two RBI and scored two runs. Hodge recorded multiple hits in every game of the LSU Round Robin. Catcher Maci Bergeron (2-for-2, RBI), infielder Sierra Daniel (2-for-2, three runs), and outfielder Jalia Lassiter (2-for-4, RBI) also had multi-hit games in Sunday’s finale. Pitcher Sydney Berzon (9-0) threw her ninth complete game this season, working 5.0 innings with three strikeouts and allowing 10 hits, two runs, and one walk. Minnesota’s starting pitcher Sydney Schwartz (3-7) received the loss. Schwarts also struck out three and walked one batter but gave up five runs on six hits in the first two innings. The Tigers had three base knocks in the first inning, including outfielder McKenzie Redoutey’s sharp liner through the right side to drive in a pair of runs for an early 2-0 lead. After Berzon struck out the side in the top of the second, LSU scored another three runs on two hits and capitalized on one UMN error in the bottom half-inning. Daniel scored from first base on a throwing error, infielder Danieca Coffey hit a run-scoring double, and Bergeron added an RBI single to bump LSU’s lead to 5-0. The Golden Gophers’ pitchers struggled to find the strike zone in the third inning as LSU added two runs on designated player McKaela Walker’s hit by pitch, and Coffey walked in a run. LSU totaled two HBP and two walks in the frame. Minnesota’s designated player, Taylor Krapf, hit a leadoff solo shot to left field to put UMN on the board in the fourth, and infielder Kayla Chavez hit an RBI single down the left field line in the fifth to pull within five runs at 7-2. However, LSU scored three runs on four hits and no outs to put the game on ice in the fifth. Daniel and Walker singled before Hodge tripled to left center field for another base-clearing hit. After Coffey drew a walk, Lasster singled to right to bring home Hodge and secure the run-rule victory, 10-2. LSU (19-1) has recorded three consecutive run-rule victories and nine overall this season, improving to 17-0 all-time against ULM (15-8). LSU scored in all but one inning and displayed its power at the plate, logging 12 hits to mark the 11th game this season with double-digit hits. "Tori Edwards was incredible. The offense did a good job of applying pressure throughout the game. We did a great job giving our opponents a difficult time pitching. On Tori’s first home run, she hit the opposite, which might be her first this year. It seems like she's maturing. The first shot was 84 miles an hour. I've never even heard of that. The line drive was 85 miles an hour. So, yeah, incredible day for her. “Despite Tori’s great game, other factors played into our success at the plate today. Jadyn Laneaux’s walk coming back from a 0-2 count and a two-strike hit from Maci Bergeron to send Tori back to the plate before her three-run home run in the second inning; I think many good things are happening with the offense. Some of them may go unnoticed with Tori's big swings, but many things in front of her and around her went well today.” For the second time this season, Edwards hit multiple home runs in a single game, hitting two three-run round trippers in her first two plate appearances, and scored three runs. Infielder Danieca Coffey also had a 3-for-3 outing with three runs scored, an RBI, and drew a walk in four plate appearances. Coffey leads the team with nine multi-hit games. Catcher Maci Bergeron rounds out LSU’s top hitters with her second 2-for-3 performance at the plate in as many games and matched a career-high three RBI and two runs. Pitcher Tatum Clopton (4-0) worked all five innings in the circle for the Tigers, finishing with six strikeouts and allowing four runs on two hits and four walks. The ULM pitching staff only registered two strikeouts between three pitchers, and former LSU Tiger Victoria Abrams (4-2) picked up the loss after surrendering seven runs, three hits, three walks, and no strikeouts in 1.2 innings. ULM scored four unanswered runs thanks to outfielder Meagan Brown’s three-run homer in the third and infielder Maryssa Zenzen’s leadoff blast in the fourth to pull within four runs, 8-4. Edwards stepped to the plate in the bottom of the fourth and singled through the right side for her third hit of the night, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and slid home on a wild pitch to give LSU a 9-4 lead after four innings. After the LSU defense retired ULM in order in the top of the fifth inning, highlighted by Clopton’s sixth punchout, infielder Sierra Daniel led off the bottom half with a single, and infielder Avery Hodge had a base knock, bringing Coffey, the game-clinching run to the plate. From there, three consecutive RBI singles from Coffey, outfielder Jadyn Laneaux and Bergeron ended the game 12-4. Up Next LSU will host its final regular-season tournament, the LSU Round Robin, on March 7-9. It will feature games against Minnesota and South Alabama.
