Weil TUSCALOOSA, AL - The Lady Tigers went on the road and were upset by #20 Alabama in overtime, 88-85 on Thursday night The final three minutes of the game was wild and exciting as the teams began to go back and fourth trading the lead. Trailing, 79-77, Aneesah Morrow hit a huge shot to tie the game with 23 seconds left. The game would go to overtime, 79-79. Alabama made the plays in the overtime period to pull out the win. This game was terribly officiated all night long. But LSU was their own worse enemy, only making 14-23 free throws. That's nine points left at the line. The Lady Tigers have struggled at the charity stripe most of the season and tonight, it was the difference in the out-come. You have to make your free throws. The slow starts have been an issue and it caught up to the Lady Tigers on the road tonight. For the second straight contest, they trailed by double-digits at the half and needed to battle back. This game doesn’t make or break LSU’s season. They will rebound from this. There is a lot of basketball left to play. No one hit the panic button on this team. LSU shot 46% from the floor on the night. They sank 3-9 from behind the three point arc. They Lady Tigers committed 13 turnovers while forcing Alabama into 16. The Tide out-rebounded LSU, 43-37. Mikaylah Williams led the team with 22 points. Aneesah Morrow scored 16 points. Sa'Myah Smith added 15. Mjracle Sheppard finished with 10 points. Kailyn Gilbert had 9. Day-Wilson and contributed 7 points and Flau'Jae Johnson finished with 6 points. Alabama outscored LSU, 14-5 over the fist five minutes of the opening period. The Lady Tigers only shot 25% while Bama hit 50% of their shots during the run. The first period would end with the Crimson Tide leading, 23-16. LSU continued to struggle with a slow start, missing shots and turning the ball over to allow Alabama to increase their lead to, 32-19 at the 7:36 mark. Bama remained in control of the contest, outscoring the Lady Tigers, 11-7 over the first five minutes of the second period. The sputtering Lady Tigers found themselves down by 11, 46-35 at halftime. LSU shot 45% from the floor in the first half. They hit only 1-3 from behind the arc. At the free throw line, the Lady Tigers made 6-8 for 75%. The Bayou Ben-Gals turned the ball over seven times in the first half. Alabama out-rebounded LSU, 19-15. Aneesah Morrow led the team at halftime with 9 points. Mikaylah Williams had 7. Kailyn Gilbert has 7. Sa’Myah Smith finished with 6 points. Shayeann Day-Wilson finished with 5 points and Flau’Jae Johnson was held to only one point in the first half. LSU began the second half going on a 10-4 run, cutting the Tide’s lead down to five, 50-45 at the 4:19 mark. Alabama responded with a 10-5 run to take a 60-50 advantage with 1:40 left in the third. LSU would answer with four straight to pull to within, 60-54 as we headed to the fourth quarter of a very physical contest. The Lady Tigers battled back to pull to within two, 73-71 with 3:46 left on the clock. With the loss, LSU falls to, 27-3 overall and 12-3 in the SEC. The Lady Tigers over came a 12 point halftime deficit, to rally for a big conference win on the road. LSU shot 36% from the floor on the day. They hit 3-9 three point attempts. The Lady Tigers were 14-20 from the charity stripe for 70%. They need to improve their free throw shooting before it cost them down the road in the tournament. Both teams committed 14 turnovers and LSU out-rebounded Kentucky, 47-39. Mikaylah Williams led the Lady Tigers with 24 points. Flau’Jae Johnson scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for a double-double. Annesah Morrow got her normal double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Shayeann Day-Wilson scored 8 points. Kailyn Gilbert added 4. Both Sa’Myah Smith and Last-Tear Poa finished with 2 points each. The first five minutes of the opening period was a physical one as both teams started slow in the scoring department. Kentucky held an 8-6 lead at the 4:48 media timeout. The first period would come to an end with Kentucky leading, 14-12. The Lady Wildcats outplayed LSU in the opening quarter as the Lady Tigers looked sluggish at times. LSU continued to struggle on offense and turn the ball over several times, contributing to Kentucky building a 14 point lead, 28-14 at the 5:30 mark. Kentucky continued to control the contest, outscoring LSU, 14-4 over the first seven minutes of the period. The Lady Wildcats were playing more physical and hitting big shots. Kentucky outplayed LSU in the first half, taking a 38-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Lady Tigers shot 32% from the floor in the first half. They hit 1-4 from behind the three point arc. At the free throw line, they hit 7-10 for 70%. LSU committed ten turnovers while Kentucky had five. Kentucky would go on a run to start the fourth period, cutting the LSU lead to one, 55-54 with 4:14 left in the contest. Both teams would go back and forth trading the lead, until Mikaylah Williams sank a three pointer with 49 seconds left to put LSU up, 62-58. LSU made their free throws and grabbed key rebounds late to hold on for the win. With the win LSU improves to 27-2 overall and 12-2 in the SEC. The Lady Tigers controlled the game from beginning to end, never trailing. LSU at times struggled on offense, but played fantastic defense to keep the Lady Bulldogs in check. The Lady Tigers finished the night shooting 42% from the floor. They were 6-22 from behind the arc for 27%. At the free throw line, they hit 15-22 for 68%. LSU committed ten turnovers while Georgia had 17. LSU won the re-bound battle, 42-39. Flau'Jae Johnson led the team with 21 points. Jersey Wolfenbarger scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds for a double-double. Kailyn Gilbert scored 15. Mikayliah Williams finished with 12 points. Sa'Myah Smith had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. The Lady Tigers began the contest playing with intensity on both ends of the court, as they raced out to a 17-8 lead over the first five minutes of the opening period. LSU lead for most of the game, before going cold on offense late in the third and in the fourth period. This game was won by Texas at the free throw line. They hit, 21-21 of their free throws. LSU finished, 13-19 from the charity stripe. Turnovers also hurt LSU as they committed 19 total on the day. The Lady Tigers finished the game shooting 33% from the floor. Only 3-12 from three point land for 25%. Mikaylah Williams led the team with 18 points. Fau'Jae Johnson scored 16. Aneesah Morrow finished with 15 points and 20 rebounds for another double-double. Four other Tigers socred in single digits. The game started like a track meet with both teams pushing the ball up and down the court quickly. LSU finally got on the board first with a three pointer by Mikaylah Williams at the 8:46 mark. 3-0, LSU. The pace was fast but the scoring was scarce, as LSU held a 7-4 advantage at the 4:18 media timeout. The Lady Tigers were shooting well at 60% from the floor, but only took seven shots. They also turned the ball over six times early on to help keep Texas in the contest. The game remained a low scoring affair as the first period ended with a tie, 10-10. Both teams failed to score over the final three minutes of the quarter. LSU committed nine turnovers while Texas committed six. The pace of the game slowed down late in the period and turned into a tough, physical battle in the paint. LSU began the second period with an 8-2 run to lead, 18-12 at the 4:24 media timeout. The Lady Tigers were playing suffocating, solid defense, holding Texas to 14% shooting from the floor so far in the contest. The two points by Texas came from the free throw line, as the Longhorns struggled to make a basket. Texas finally made their first basket of the quarter at the 2:28 mark. LSU continued to sputter into the fourth, struggling on offense, while the Lady Longhorns shaved four more points off of the lead to pull to within one, 49-48. Kim Mulkey called a timeout with 6:50 left on the clock, hoping to wake her team back up. Texas was able to take their first lead since very early in the first period and took control of the ballgame. With 1:36 left, LSU trailed, 59-56. They hit 6-17 from three point land for 35%. LSU had a great day at the free throw line, sinking 20-22 for 91%. The Bayou Ben-Gals turned the ball over 13 times while forcing 19 and LSU out-rebounded the Vols, 41-37. Kailyn Gilbert led the team with 23 points. Mikaylah Williams finished with 16. Aneesah Morrow got another double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Flau'Jae Johnson added 12 points. Mjracle Sheppard finished with 8 points. The Lady Tigers began to pull away from Tennessee, extending their lead to nine, but the Lady Vols responded with back to back huge three point shots to pull to within three, 35-32 with 4:45 left in the first half. The first half ended with LSU leading by four, 41-37. LSU shot 41% from the floor in the first half. They sank only 2-10 from behind the arc for 20%. At the free throw line they made 7-8 for 88%. The Lady Tigers committed seven turnovers while forcing Tennessee into 12. The rebounds were all even at 20-20 at the break. Mikaylah Williams led the Tigers at the half with 9 points. At the 5:00 mark, Tennessee called a timeout after LSU regained the lead, 71-66 in front of an electric, loud crowd. With the win LSU improves to, 25-1 overall and 10-1 in the SEC. LSU struggled offensively most of the night, until finding enough of a spark in the fourth period to pull away from a Missouri squad that gave them all they could handle. The Lady Tigers from the bayou shot 39% from the floor for the game, but had a great night from behind the three point arc, hitting 7-15 for 47%. They sputtered at the free throw line sinking 18-24 for 75%. LSU had a tough night with turnovers as they committed 14. They were able to out-rebound Missouri, 40-30. Flau'Jae Johnson led the Bayou Ben-Gals with 19 points. Mikaylah Williams finished with 16 points. Aneesah Morrow registered her 22nd double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Both teams were struggling to score in this low scoring contest. At the 4:50 media timeout, we were all even at 20-20. LSU would outscore Missouri, 11-7 over the final 4:50 of the second period to lead, 31-27 at halftime. The Lady Tigers shot 11-27 from the floor in the first half for 41%. They were able to hit 4-7 three point attempts for 57%. At the free throw line, LSU sank 5-8 for 63%. The Lady Tigers committed eight first half turnovers while forcing Mizzou into six. The Lady Tigers found themselves in a dog-fight with a pesky Missouri team that refused to go away, as they would outscore LSU, 7-4 over the first four minutes of the fourth period, to cut the visiting team's lead to, 55-46. A scrappy Mississippi State team simply couldn't overcome LSU's talent and will as the Lady Tigers stayed in control throughout the entire contest. LSU finished the day shooting 41% from the floor. They had a great day from behind the three point arc, hitting 9-20 for 45%. They sank 12-18 from the charity stripe for 67%. LSU turned the ball over 16 times while forcing State into 19. Mississippi State out-rebounded the Lady Tigers, 49-48. Mikaylah Williams led the team with 22 points. Flau'Jae Johnson scored 20 points. Annesah Morrow had another double-double with 18 points and 20 rebounds. Jersey Wolfenbarger added 12 points. Four other Lady Tigers finished with single digit scoring. LSU continued to play at a high level, even after State began to heat up. State continued to play hard and well, as they outscored LSU, 23-17 in the period, cutting the Lady Tiger's lead to six, 41-35 at halftime. The Lady Tigers shot 44% from the floor in the first half. LSU usually doesn't make many three point shots a game, but in the first half they were a fantastic, 7-13 from behind the arc for 54%. They sank 2-3 from the free throw line. Over the next three minutes, the Lady Tigers would outscore Mississippi State, 7-4 to increase their lead to, 55-41 with 4:37 left in the third period. They Lady Tigers held an 11 point lead, 65-54 as the third period came to and end. Mississippi State actually outscored LSU, 13-10 over the final 4:37 of the quarter. With 5:36 left in the contest, LSU held a 76-61 lead after outscoring State, 11-7 so far in the final period. LSU really turned up their defensive pressure, only allowing State to score six points during the final 5:36 of the game, (one basket and four free throws). With the win, LSU improves to 23-1 overall and 8-1 in the SEC. Next, the Lady Tigers will travel to Columbia to play Missouri on Thursday, February 6 at 6:30 pm.
