Da Boot Sports 11/25/2024 LSU Sports Communications By: LSU Staff NASSAU, Bahamas – No. 7 LSU (7-0) trailed Washington (6-2) for nearly 35 minutes, but Kailyn Gilbert’s scooping, left-handed layup with a second left propelled the Tigers past the Huskies, 68-67, to give them a win in their first of two games at the Pink Flamingo Championship. Washington led in the second half by as many as 12 and in the fourth quarter by as many as 6. LSU trailed Washington by one point and defensive pressure forced a dead-ball turnover, giving LSU 20 seconds to try to win after not holding the lead since early in the first quarter. Last-Tear Poa delivered an errant pass on the ensuing play to Flau’Jae Johnson who saved the ball from going into the backcourt for a violation. Johnson’s save made its way to Gilbert who got the loose ball on the right wing with roughly six seconds remaining. She sliced through the lane, gathering through two Washington defenders towards the left block. Her lefty layup spun around and stopped on the rim before dropping through the bucket with one second remaining. Washington called a timeout and Gilbert stole the ball on the inbound pass to prevent the Huskies from having a chance to win the game. “That was not a clean possession where we could really get something and be settled,” Coach Kim Mulkey said. “KG, loose ball on the floor, gets it with 6.1 seconds left and did what ballers do. You just duck your head and you go in there and make something happen.” NC State defeated Southern on Monday to set up the Pink Flamingo Championship game. The Tigers and Wolfpack will face each other on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. CT in the championship game on FloCollege. Johnson led the Tigers in the contest with 19 points on 8-19 shooting and tacked on 4 rebounds and 4 steals to help seal the win for LSU. Both of LSU’s starting posts Sa’Myah Smith and Aneesah Morrow logged double-doubles in the game. Sa’Myah Smith had 16 points and 15 rebounds, 11 of which came on the offensive glass. Morrow, who recorded her 80th career double-double, finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Together Morrow and Smith combined for 17 of LSU’s 27 offensive rebounds which helped give LSU a 26-10 advantage in second-chance points. “They were battling in there,” Coach Mulkey said about the play of Morrow and Smith. “Morrow was double teamed every time she caught the ball. For those two kids to have double-doubles and our perimeter is supposed to be our strength, well that was good for our team because it will help for confidence with the post play.” Sayvia Sellers scored a game-high 24 points, but fouled out with just over four minutes left. In total three Huskies scored double figures. All five Washington starters scored at least 8 points, but the Huskies finished with zero bench points. For LSU to win, the Tigers had to navigate their worst shooting game of the season against a tough Washington 3-2 zone defense. LSU finished 33-percent for the game and just 16-percent from beyond the arc. Washington, on the other hand, shot 44-percent throughout the game and 30-percent from three. The Huskies built a 13 point lead by the end of the first quarter. LSU chipped away throughout the rest of the game, outsourcing Washington in the next three quarters before Gilbert’s late bucket gave LSU its final margin of victory. “We’re very lucky to have won the game, but you create your own luck,” Coach Mulkey said. “Had we not won the game, I still would have been proud of the effort that was given by that group on the floor the last 5 to 10 minutes. They fought really hard to make positive things happen.” The Tigers started the game strong and jumped out to the early 4-0 advantage, but Washington then went on a 7-0 run in the first to regain the lead. Both teams started slowly on the offensive end, shooting under 40 percent from the field going into the media timeout. The Huskies came out of the break strong, and jumped out to a 17-8 lead with 3 minutes remaining in the first. The LSU offense continued to struggle in the first, as the Tigers turned the ball over 6 times in the first period. At the end of the first quarter, LSU trailed Washington 11-24. The Tigers went 5-17 from the field in the first and were 0-5 from three point range. Washington’s Sayvia Sellers led the quarter in scoring with 9 points. LSU struck first in the second quarter with a Johnson layup in the lane. After being down as much as 14 points, LSU clawed their way back and cut the Washington lead to 5 after three pointers from Morrow and Johnson. Washington responded to LSU’s efforts with a three pointer from Sellers and another layup to push the margin back to 10 points. The Huskies led the Tigers 36-29 at the half. LSU was 12-39 from the field and 3-12 from three and ended with 7 turnovers in the half. The Tigers outscored the Huskies 18-12 in the second quarter to stay in the game, and Morrow led LSU with 6 points in the quarter. Smith converted an and-1 layup to get LSU started in the second half. The Tigers were able to cut the Washington lead to 6 points with 7 minutes remaining in the quarter after contributions from Johnson and Morrow. Washington expanded on the lead throughout the final minutes of the third, moving the needle in their favor with a 13 point lead. The Tigers continued to fight on the offensive end with Smith and Morrow delivering crucial points, but the Huskies had a response to the efforts on every occasion. Smith earned her 10th rebound of the day in the third to record her first double-double of the season. At the end of the third quarter, LSU trailed Washington 52-48. Morrow earned her 10th board of the night to record her 6th double-double of the year and 80th of her career overall. Johnson and Gilbert both scored in the beginning of the fourth quarter to cut Washington’s lead to 3 points. Morrow converted two free throws after a shooting foul to shorten Washington’s lead to 2 points once again. Washington’s Sellers dropped a three pointer and increased the Husky advantage to 5 points. Morrow scored on back-to-back possessions to keep LSU in a one score contest. Johnson rattled off five straight points to take Washington’s 6 point lead down to a 1 point advantage with 44 seconds remaining in the game. Gilbert converted a layup with only 1 second left in the game to seal the win for the Tigers. Washington took a timeout to advance the ball to the right sideline. On the inbound, Gilbert picked the ball off and time expired for LSU to remain undefeated. She scored 15 points in the second half and also had 2 blocks. Aneesah Morrow recorded her nation-leading fifth double-double of the season with 23 points and 16 rebounds. “The kid has a motor,” Mulkey said about Morrow. “Like in life, you want to be around people that have energy and enthusiasm. She never stops, whether they miss a shot, get a rebound or don’t, she never stops. She’s consistently working.” Jersey Wolfenbarger had a season-high for the second game in a row with 15 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. Sa’Myah Smith contributed 9 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. “I see a lot of confidence,” Morrow said about Wolfenbarger’s development. “I feel like she’s getting the feel of it now. She always pulls me to the side if she ever needs help or has any questions. I feel like she’s more confident playing. We help each other and communicate.” “If you combine Sa’Myah Smith and Jersey,” Coach Mulkey explained, “you can’t ask them to do anymore than they did tonight. Look at their stats. I’ll take that any day. They both got good minutes. They both produced. They both got rebounds. They scored the ball.” Along with Johnson, both Mikaylah Williams and Last-Tear Poa had five assists in the game. Tulane had two players finish with over 20 points. Kyren Whittington had a team-high 24 points, 20 of which came in the second half. All of Victoria Keenan’s 21 points came in the first half when she shot 7-8 from beyond the arc. LSU’s Johnson held her scoreless in the second half, limiting her to three shot attempts. “The thing I’m most proud of is getting on number two from Tulane (Keenan), who hit seven threes, but she didn’t score in the second half,” Johnson said. “Mostly, I kept the mentality of not letting the first half defeat me.” Morrow kicked off the scoring for the Tigers, converting an and-1 layup off the assist from Johnson. Johnson and Williams both found success in the lane early in the first quarter and converted layups to give LSU the early 7-2 lead. The Tigers entered the media timeout on an 8-2 run with contributions from Mikaylah Williams, Morrow and Wolfenbarger. Out of the break, Wolfenbarger forced a steal to lead a Johnson mid-range jumper that featured some shifty maneuvering to increase LSU’s lead to 10. Wolfenbarger continued to assert her presence in the offensive paint, and cashed a putback layup over two Tulane defenders. After one quarter, LSU led Tulane 25-15. Morrow scored 9 points on 4-6 shooting and tallied 4 rebounds to pace the Tigers in both categories. LSU held Tulane to 6-18 shooting in the first and forced 4 turnovers. Sa’Myah Smith got the Tigers started in the second quarter with a made layup. After two made three pointers from Tulane’s Victoria Keenan, Morrow responded with a tough layup in the paint and a mid-range to restore a 10 point LSU lead. After Last-Tear Poa forced an offensive foul, Williams found Johnson in the corner for a three pointer that boosted the energy in the arena. Keenan remained hot for Tulane, dropping multiple triples in short succession to cut LSU’s lead to 8. But, Wolfenbarger gave LSU an important spark on offense as the forward cashed two shots on back-to-back possessions. Poa continued to facilitate the offense, as the veteran guard found Wolfenbarger in the paint once again for the and-1 score. At the half, LSU held a 50-37 lead over Tulane. Morrow and Wolfenbarger led the Tigers in scoring with 15 and 13, respectively. The Bayou Bengals were strong on the glass in the half, out rebounding the Green Wave 26-17. Both teams struggled to start the quarter with offense, but LSU ended the drought with Morrow scoring on back-to-back possessions. Johnson then flew down the lane and beat the defender to the spot for the and-1 layup to give LSU the 15 point lead over Tulane. Morrow earned her fifth double-double of the season and fourth consecutive in the third quarter. Johnson cashed her second three pointer of the game off the assist from Shayeann Day-Wilson. The Tigers brought offensive creativity to the forefront of the contest, as Smith found Poa on a tip pass for the easy two points. Johnson grabbed her 10th rebound of the contest in the third, giving the standout guard her second 10 point, 10 rebound performance of the season. Smith made an immediate impact on the boards in the third quarter, as she grabbed multiple missed shots and converted putbacks. The Tigers held a commanding 75-55 lead after three quarters. Morrow secured a 20 point night with the first bucket of the fourth quarter. Tulane went on a 13-2 run over 5 minutes in the fourth, which prompted an LSU timeout. Guard Kyren Whittington led the Green Wave’s late-game effort with 9 points in the offensive attack. Johnson dropped a layup with 3:30 remaining to give LSU a 10 point advantage. On the very next possession, Tulane was able to get the long range triple to fall and cut LSU’s lead back to 7. The Tigers forced a missed three pointer from the Green Wave and Johnson got the second-chance layup to fall on the next possession. After both teams found buckets in crunch time, LSU forced Tulane to foul and ended the game 85-74. Williams put together 18 points on 7-14 shooting with 6 rebounds in the game. “I think we want to be known as the team that will play hard the whole game,” Smith said. “I think it’s obvious that Flau’jae is playing effortlessly,” Coach Kim Mulkey said. “She’s in the greatest shape she’s ever been; it’s coming easy for her. Morrow plays as hard as anybody I’ve coached. Mikaylah started taking it to the rim and played stronger.” Three EKU players scored 9 points, but none of them scored in double figures. LSU limited EKU to shooting 26-percent from the field The Tigers were efficient shooting the ball 59-percent from the field, making 5-11 three-point attempts. LSU also applied significant defensive pressure, forcing 21 turnovers. LSU shows a full-court press through a significant part of the game. “I don’t know if pressing will be our identity, but if you’re going to get on the floor, I better be able to press and you better be able to help create some things,” Coach Mulkey said. “So, that’s why we are doing that from start to finish as much as we can.” LSU got things started quickly, as Morrow drained a mid-range jumper with just seconds off the clock. Morrow added another two points just a few possessions later, grabbing a rebound and putting the ball in for a layup through some contact. Eastern Kentucky found success from three point range early, shooting 2-3 on their first 5 attempts. But, Johnson swung the momentum back in favor of the Tigers, scoring 8 points in quick succession to build the Tiger lead to 8 in the first. The Tigers kept pressure on the Colonels on the defensive end, forcing five turnovers in the first quarter and allowing only 28 percent shooting from the field. With only seconds remaining in the first, Mikaylah Williams spun into the paint and dropped a fading layup to increase the LSU lead to 16 at the break. After struggling to get shots to fall to begin the second, Smith made a shift move in the paint and got a layup to drop. After allowing an EKU layup, Shayeann Day-Wilson registered her first points as a Tiger with a three pointer to bring LSU’s lead back to 16. The Tigers made their presence known on defense, causing back-to-back traveling violations on the Colonels and capitalizing on the possessions with points. With time winding down in the half, Williams was able to pull up from the mid-range and cash a jumper to give the Tigers a 24 point lead at half. At the half, LSU 18-34 from the field and 3-6 from three, while the Colonels were 10-31 and 4-14 from three. After forcing a turnover, Day-Wilson made an eye-popping entry pass to a wide open Morrow in the paint, who cashed the easy layup. After three quarters, LSU led Eastern Kentucky 73-34 and held the Colonels to 28 percent from the field. After forcing yet another Colonel turnover, the Tigers found Williams in the mid-range for a jumper to stack on to the lead. The Colonels were stout on defense in the beginning of the fourth, keeping the LSU offense at bay and capitalizing on shots. Aalyah Del Rosario registered her first block of the game, which led to a Kailyn Gilbert jumper. Gilbert then took the ball down the floor and made a tough and-1 layup to spark the LSU offense in the final period.
