Da Boot Sports 12/19/2024 By: Terrill J. Weil CHICAGO, ILL - The 5th ranked Lady Tigers traveled to the Windy City to play the University of Illinois-Chicago on Thursday night and came away with a hard fought, 91-73 victory against a well coached Flames team that played with hustle and heart. UIC gave LSU all they could handle in the first half before they Lady Tigers were able to pull away in the third period. The Flames battled hard for all 40 minutes, keeping the game respectable. Every time it looked like LSU would really open things up, the Flames would respond to keep the game from turning into an ugly blowout. LSU shot 32-67 from the floor for 48% on the night. They had a good night from three point land, hitting 8-17 for 47%. The Lady Tigers sank 19-26 from the charity stripe for 73%. LSU ended up out-rebounding UIC, 40-29. LSU still seems to be committing to many turnovers with 13 total in the game. Coach Mulkey will need to get this fixed before SEC play begins. Flau'Jae Johnson led the team with a double-double, 23 points and 11 rebounds. Aneesah Morrow also registered a double-double, scoring 19 points with 13 rebounds. Mikaylah Williams scored 17 points. Sa'Myah Smith and Kailyn Gilbert both added 8 points each. Last-Tear Poa scored 7 points. Jersey Wolfenbarger finished with 5 and Jada Richards scored 3 points. Both teams started the game slow, struggling to put the ball in the basket, but eventually began to find their rhythm and started to trade baskets. At the first media timeout of the night with 3:58 left in the period, LSU led, 12-10. After the timeout, LSU began to heat up, scoring six straight to increase their lead to 18-10. The first period would come to an end with the Lady Tigers up, 18-11. A well coached, hustling UIC team refused to be intimidated by LSU and kept themselves within shouting distance. At the 4:06 mark of the second quarter, LSU only led by eight, 31-23. In a game that most thought LSU would dominate and win incredibly easy, the Flames hung tough with the Lady Tigers, as we would go to halftime with LSU leading, 40-31. LSU shot 42% from the floor in the first half. They hit 4-11 from behind the arc for 36%. They sank 6-8 free throws for 75%. The Ladt Tigers turned the ball over only five times in the first half while forcing the Flames into 12. LSU led the rebound battle, 19-18. Flau'Jae Johnson led the team at the break with 10 points. Aneesah Morrow scored 9 points. Sa'Myah Smith added 8 points. Mikaylah Williams contributed 7 points. Jada Richard had 3 points. Last-Tear Poa added 2 while Mjracle Sheppard had 1 point. LSU finally started to pull away from the Flames, outscoring them 13-2 over the first four minutes of the third period, taking a 53-33 lead with 5:54 left in the quarter. The Lady Tigers remained in control of the contest as the third period came to an end. LSU took a 21 point lead, 67-46 into the fourth quarter against the pesky Flames. UIC refused to quit as they continued to fight hard against a superior opponent, cutting the LSU lead to 18, 78-60 with 5:48 left on the clock. Give a lot of credit to the UIC Flames, they never looked intimidated by the 5th ranked Lady Tigers and tested LSU throughout the contest. With the win LSU improves to 14-0 on the season. The Lady Tigers will now take a break for Christmas before returning to play on Sunday December 29 in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center as they will host Albany. Tipoff is set for 1:00 pm.
