Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The 5th ranked Lady Tigers began SEC play with a shocking 80-78 loss to #11 Kentucky on Thursday night in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in front of 11,485 Tiger fans. LSU went ice cold over the final five minutes of the contest, failing to make a basket, allowing Kentucky to battle back to register the win. With LSU up, 78-77, Tonie Morgan hit a three point shot at the buzzer to give Kentucky the 80-78 victory. The Lady Tigers shot 49% from the floor on the night. They hit 5-11 from three point land for 45%. They sank 13-15 from the free throw line for 87%. A much taller Kentucky team dominated the rebound battle, 45-29. Williams led the Lady Tigers with 26 points. F. Johnson scored 15. Joyner and Richard both finished with 14 points each. Knox added 5 points. Koval and Fulwiley both had a tough night, scoring only 2 points each. LSU started the contest red hot, feeding off of an electric PMAC crowd to race out to a 14-2 lead at the 6:02 mark. But Kentucky would go on a 19-9 run to only trail, 23-22 at the end of the first period. A very good Kentucky team was giving the Lady Tigers all they could handle. At the 4:57 official's timeout, LSU led, 33-30. The cat-fight remained an intense battle as we headed to the halftime break all even at 41-41. LSU shot 15-31 from the field in the first half for 48%. They sank 3-8 from behind the arc for 38%. At the charity stripe, the Lady Tigers hit 8-9 for 89%. Kentucky out-rebounded LSU, 22-17 over the first 20 minutes. The Lady Wildcats committed four turnovers while LSU had five. Mikayalah Williams led the team at the break with 14 points. Jada Richard finished with 9. Flau'Jae Johnson added 7 points. Amiya Joyner had 4 points. Grace Knox scored 3. Kate Koval and MiLaysia Fulwiley both added 2 points each. Both teams continued to play with intensity on both ends of the floor to start the third period. At the 4:42 official's timeout, LSU led, 54-50. After the timeout, LSU scored five straight to increase their advantage to 59-50, causing Kentucky to call a 30 second timeout at the 3:11 mark. Kentucky refused to go away, keeping pace with the Ben-Gals, as LSU led 65-60 at the end of the third period. Ten minutes remained in a fantastic SEC contest between two very good teams. With 4:09 remaining in the contest, LSU held a 75-69 lead. Kentucky scored six straight to tie the game at 75-75 at the 2:10 mark. The Lady Wildcats took the lead, 77-75 with only 1:17 remaining. Mikaylah Williams was fouled wile attempting a shot from behind the arc and calmly sank all three of her free throws to give LSU a 78-77 lead with 18 seconds remaining. LSU suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 14-1 overall and 0-1 in SEC play. Next up, the Lady Tigers will travel to Nashville to play Vanderbilt on Sunday, January 4 at 4:00 pm CST.
