Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The Lady Tigers return home to the Pete Maravich Assembly Center to host Tennessee on Sunday afternoon and came away with another nail biting victory against the Lady Vols., 82-77. LSU grabbed the lead late in the contest and made their free throws and the plays to hold on for the win. The Lady Tigers shot 38% from the floor on the day. They hit 6-17 from three point land for 35%. LSU had a great day at the free throw line, sinking 20-22 for 91%. The Bayou Ben-Gals turned the ball over 13 times while forcing 19 and LSU out-rebounded the Vols, 41-37. Kailyn Gilbert led the team with 23 points. Mikaylah Williams finished with 16. Aneesah Morrow got another double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Flau'Jae Johnson added 12 points. Mjracle Sheppard finished with 8 points. Jada Richard scored 5. and Sa'Myah Smith had 4 points. The Maravich Center was electric and loud early as both teams went back and forth trading blows and baskets. At the 11:17 official's timeout, the game was all even at 11-11. The first period came to an end with LSU leading, 22-20. Both teams played well in the opening quarter. Tennessee shot 53% from the floor, while the Lady Tigers shot 50%. The contest was shaping up to be another great SEC battle. The Lady Tigers began to pull away from Tennessee, extending their lead to nine, but the Lady Vols responded with back to back huge three point shots to pull to within three, 35-32 with 4:45 left in the first half. The first half ended with LSU leading by four, 41-37. LSU shot 41% from the floor in the first half. They sank only 2-10 from behind the arc for 20%. At the free throw line they made 7-8 for 88%. The Lady Tigers committed seven turnovers while forcing Tennessee into 12. The rebounds were all even at 20-20 at the break. Mikaylah Williams led the Tigers at the half with 9 points. Flau'Jae Johnson and Mjracle Sheppard both scored 8 points each. Aneesah Morrow added 7. Sa.Myah Smith finished with 4 points. Jada Richard had 3 and Kailyn Gilbert scored 2 points. Tennessee started the second half with four straight to tie the game at 41-41 at the 8:01 mark. The Lady Vols ended up outscoring LSU, 7-0 to begin the third period to take the lead. Tennessee led, 44-41 at the 7:06 official's timeout. Over the next four minutes, LSU would go on a 14-5 run to regain the lead, 55-50. But the Lady Tigers couldn't pull away any further. Tennessee responded with three straight to keep things close, 55-53 at the 2:31 mark. The Maravich Center exploded when Mikaylah Williams drained a three pointer at the buzzer to end the third period. We headed to the final quarter in a very loud PMAC with LSU leading, 62-57. At the 5:00 mark, Tennessee called a timeout after LSU regained the lead, 71-66 in front of an electric, loud crowd. With the win LSU improves to, 25-1 overall and 10-1 in the SEC. Next up the Lady Tigers will travel to Austin to play Texas on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 2:00 pm. The game will be televised on ABC. Hats off to the LSU fans.
