Weil NASHVILLE, TN - The Lady Tigers looked to bounce back from their disappointing loss to Kentucky, but Vanderbilt stepped up late in the contest, making the big rebounds and shots to defeat LSU, 65-61. LSU finished the day shooting 43% from the field. They sank 3-7 from three point land for 43%. They struggled at the free throw line, hitting 8-13 for 62%. The Lady Tigers committed 22 turnovers that led to 15 points for Vandy. Fulwiley and Richard both scored 13 points each to lead the team. Williams added 12. Z. Johnson contributed 10 points. Koval had 9. Joyner scored 4 points. Hats off to the Lady Commodores who were able to keep Flau'Jae Johnson scoreless. Both teams started slow, but it was five early LSU turnovers that contributed to Vanderbilt taking control. At the 4:52 Media Timeout, The Lady Commodores led, 10-5. The first period came to an end with Vanderbilt leading, 15-12. After a shaky start, LSU finally settled down and out-scored Vandy, 10-3 over the first four minutes of the second period to lead, 22-18 at the 6:05 mark. The Lady Tigers were able to control the final six minutes of the half, taking a 28-22 advantage into the locker room at halftime. LSU shot 12-28 from the field in the first half for 43%. They hit 2-3 from behind the arc for 67%. They sank 2-4 free throws. LSU won the first half rebound battle, 24-12. The Lady Tigers hurt themselves with 12 turnovers. Vandy had 8. Fulwiley led the team at the break with 8 points. Richard scored 7. Williams had 5 points. Z. Johnson added 4. Both Joyner and Koval scored 2 points each. At the 4:43 official's timeout in the third period, LSU led, 38-32. We headed to the fourth period with LSU on top, 43-42. LSU went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 49-42, but Vandy responded with back to back three pointers to pull to within one, 49-48 with 5:21 left in the contest. The Lady Tigers sputtered badly late in the game, missing shots as Vanderbilt got hot from behind the three point arc to regain the lead and were able to hold off LSU for the victory. With the loss, LSU falls to 14-2 overall and 0-2 in SEC play. Next up, the Lady Tigers will travel to Athens to play Georgia on Thursday, January 8 at 5:30 pm CST.
