Da Boot Sports 1/19/2025 By: Terrill J. Weil GAINESVILLE, FL - The Lady Tigers headed to Gainesville to take on the Gators on Sunday afternoon and easily defeated Florida, 80-63. Florida played LSU tough in the first half, but LSU simply dominated the final two periods to stay undefeated on the season. LSU shot 43% from the floor on the day. They hit 4-15 from behind the three point arc. At the free throw line, they sank 14-23 for 61%. LSU only committed 9 turnovers and forced Florida into 24. The Gators won the rebound battle, 44-38. Mikaylah Williams led the team with 22 points. Aneesah Morrow finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for another double-double. Flau'Jae Johnson scored 19 points. Mjracle Sheppard added 8. Shayeann Day-Wilson and Sa'Myah Smith both scored 4 points each. Kailyn Gilbert finished with 3 points. LSU started the game on fire, racing out to a quick 7-0 lead, forcing a Florida timeout only 61 seconds into the contest. Florida settled down after the timeout, going on a 7-0 run of their own to tie the game with 7:28 left on the clock. After taking a quick 7-0 lead, LSU found themselves outscored by the Gators, 21-8 to end the opening period. 21-15 Gators as we headed to the second quarter. LSU regained their focus to start the second period, going on a 7-0 run over the first minute of the quarter. 22-21, Lady Tigers. The Lady Tigers would outscore the Gators, 8-5 over the next four minutes to take a 30-26 advantage. A young and talented Florida team refused to back down to the 5th ranked Tigers, keeping the game close as we headed to halftime with LSU leading, 37-33. The Ben-Gals shot 41% from the floor in the first half. They sank 3-7 from three point land for 43%. At the free throw line, LSU hit 6-11 for 55%. LSU only turned the ball over five times while forcing Florida into ten. The Lady Gators out-rebounded LSU, 27-18 over the first 20 minutes. Flau'Jae Johnson led the team at the break with 11 points. Mikaylah Williams scored 10. Aneesah Morrow finished with 7 points. Sa.Myah Smith added 4. Kailyn Gilbert managed 3 points and Shayeann Day-Wilson scored 2 points. LSU began to outplay Florida in the second half, going on a 14-5 run over the first five minutes of the period. The Lady Tigers led, 51-38 at the 4:43 mark of the third. The Lady Tigers flexed their muscles in the third period, pulling away from the Gators to take a 59-48 lead into the final period. Once again, LSU began a quarter fast and focused, sprinting out to a 6-0 run to build a 17 point advantage, 65-48 with 8:57 left in the contest. Another 7-0 run by LSU extended their lead to 72-48 with 6:15 left in the contest. LSU was simply too much for the Lady Gators the rest of the way, as the Lady Tigers came away with a blow out victory. The Lady Tigers improve to 20-0 overall and 5-0 in the SEC. Next up is a big one. LSU travels to Columbia to face #2 ranked South Carolina on Thursday, January 23. Tipoff is set for 7:00 pm. You can watch the game on ESPN.
