Da Boot Sports 1/13/2025 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The #5 Lady Tigers returned home to the P-MAC on Monday evening and won a very competitive game against a tough Vanderbilt team, 83-77. In a close contest, Aneesah Morrow banked in a shot to put LSU up by six, 81-75 with 40 seconds remaining. LSU made their free throws and played great defense the rest of the way for the victory. LSU shot 34-71 from the floor for 48% on the night. they sank 3-9 from behind the three point arc. They hit 12-18 free throws for 67%. The Lady Tigers turned the ball over 17 times in the game while forcing Vanderbilt into 16. LSU out-rebounded the Commodores, 45-25. Flau'Jae Johnson led the team with 23 points. Aneesah Morrow finished with 23 points and 15 rebounds for another double-double. Mikaylah Williams scored 20. Kailyn Gilbert added 6 points. Sa'Myah Smith finished with 4. Shayeann Day-Wilson and Jersey Wolfenbarger both had 2 points each and Last-Tear Poa finished with 1 point. The contest opened as a fast pace shoot out. Vanderbilt held a one point lead, 15-14 at the 3:32 official's timeout. We ended up even at 21-21 as the first period came to an end. LSU outscored Vanderbilt, 10-5 over the first five minutes of the second quarter to take a 31-26 lead. In a very well played game by both teams, we headed to halftime all even at 37-37. Vanderbilt outscored LSU, 11-6 over the final 4:56 of the second period. LSU shot only 39% in the first half. They were only 1-5 from three point range. 10-16 from the free throw line for 63%. LSU turned the ball over 12 times while Vandy committed 10. The Lady Tigers out-rebounded the Lady Commodores, 26-14 Flau'Jae Johnson led the team at the break with 12 points. Aneesah Morrow scored 9 points. Mikaylah Williams finished with 7. Kailyn Gilbert added 4. Sa'Myah Smith and Jersey Wolfenbarger scored 2 points each and Last-Tear Poas had 1 point. The contest remained tight early in the third. With 6:00 left in the period, LSU held a two point lead, 46-44. Over the next three minutes, LSU picked up their intensity, but Vanderbilt refused to back down, as the game remained close at, 54-49 Lady Tigers with 3:08 left in the period. The Lady Commodores outscored LSU, 8-4 over the final 3:08 of the third period to cut the Ben-Gals' lead to only one, 58-57 as we headed to the fourth quarter. LSU found themselves in a close SEC battle for the second game in a row and with only 4:57 left on the clock, the Lady Tigers held a 69-65 advantage. With 1:39 left the game was still in question with LSU holding a 77-72 lead. The Lady Tigers improve to 19-0 overall and 4-0 in SEC play. Next, LSU will travel to Gainesville on Sunday, January 19 to play the Florida Gators. Tipoff is set for 12:00 pm and you can watch the game on the SEC Network.
