Da Boot Sports 2/23/2025 By: Terrill J. Weil LEXINGTON, KY - #7 LSU traveled to Lexington and defeated the #14 Lady Wildcats, 65-58 in a very competitive contest on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Tigers over came a 12 point halftime deficit, to rally for a big conference win on the road. LSU shot 36% from the floor on the day. They hit 3-9 three point attempts. The Lady Tigers were 14-20 from the charity stripe for 70%. They need to improve their free throw shooting before it cost them down the road in the tournament. Both teams committed 14 turnovers and LSU out-rebounded Kentucky, 47-39. Mikaylah Williams led the Lady Tigers with 24 points. Flau’Jae Johnson scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for a double-double. Annesah Morrow got her normal double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Shayeann Day-Wilson scored 8 points. Kailyn Gilbert added 4. Both Sa’Myah Smith and Last-Tear Poa finished with 2 points each. The first five minutes of the opening period was a physical one as both teams started slow in the scoring department. Kentucky held an 8-6 lead at the 4:48 media timeout. The first period would come to an end with Kentucky leading, 14-12. The Lady Wildcats outplayed LSU in the opening quarter as the Lady Tigers looked sluggish at times. LSU continued to struggle on offense and turn the ball over several times, contributing to Kentucky building a 14 point lead, 28-14 at the 5:30 mark. Kentucky continued to control the contest, outscoring LSU, 14-4 over the first seven minutes of the period. The Lady Wildcats were playing more physical and hitting big shots. Kentucky outplayed LSU in the first half, taking a 38-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Lady Tigers shot 32% from the floor in the first half. They hit 1-4 from behind the three point arc. At the free throw line, they hit 7-10 for 70%. LSU committed ten turnovers while Kentucky had five. The Lady Wildcats out-rebounded LSU over the first 20 minutes, 23-20. Mikaylah Williams led the team at the break with 9 points. Aneesah Morrow scored 6. Kailyn Gilbert added 4 points. Flau’Jae Johnson finished with 3 points. Last-Tear Poa and Shayeann Day-Wilson both had 2 points each. LSU started the second half with more of a spark, going on a 10-3 run to cut the Kentucky lead to, 41-36 at the 4:57 official’s timeout. LSU took their first lead of the game at the 3:36 mark of the third, when Flau’Jae Johnson sank a three pointer. 43-42, Lady Tigers. You could finally feel the momentum swing in LSU’s direction. The Lady Tigers outscored Kentucky, 13-3 over the final five minutes of the third to take a 49-44 lead into the final period. Kentucky would go on a run to start the fourth period, cutting the LSU lead to one, 55-54 with 4:14 left in the contest. Both teams would go back and forth trading the lead, until Mikaylah Williams sank a three pointer with 49 seconds left to put LSU up, 62-58. LSU made their free throws and grabbed key rebounds late to hold on for the win. With the win LSU improves to 27-2 overall and 12-2 in the SEC. Next up, the Lady Tigers will head to Tuscaloosa to play Alabama on Thursday, Feb. 27. Tipoff is set for 8:00 pm. The game will be televised on ESPN & the SEC Network.
