Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - It’s March Madness time and the LSU Lady Tigers handled business in round one, dismantling San Diego State, 103-48. LSU shot 50% from the floor on the night. They hit 10-18 from behind the arc for 56%. At the free throw line they sank 21-32 for 66%. The Lady Tigers turned the ball over 11 times to the Aztecs’ 19 times. LSU out-rebounded San Diego State, 53-31. Johnson led the team with 22 points. Williams scored 13. Morrow finnished with another double-double, 12 points and 12 rebounds. Smith and Sheppard both finished with 10 points each. Dal Rosario added 9. Wolfenbarger scored 6 points. Richard had 5. Gilbert contributed 4 points and Poa has 1 point. LSU started fast, jumping out to a 7-0 lead during the first two minutes of the contest. The opening run would increase to 11-0, causing San Diego State to call a timeout at the 6:55 mark. The Lady Tigers remained in complete control over the final 5:55 of the first period, outscoring the Aztecs, 16-7 to lead 27-10 as we headed to the second quarter. LSU began the second period on a 9-2 run to extend their advantage to 36-12 at the 4:51 official’s timeout. The Lady Aztecs simply couldn’t handle LSU’s fire power. As they trailed, 49-20 at halftime. LSU shot a strong 59% from the floor in the first half. They sank 6-10 from behind the three point arc for 60%. At the free throw line they went 9-15 for 60%. The Lady Tigers turned the ball over nine times while forcing San Diego State into 12. LSU led the rebound battle at the break, 22-11. Aneesah Morrow led the team at the half with 12 points. Mjracle Sheppard and Flau’Jae Johnson both scored 10 points each. LSU began the second half outscoring the Aztecs, 12-7, increasing their lead to, 61-27 with 4:42 left in the third period. The Lady Tigers continued to dominate, taking a 37 point lead into the final period, 73-36. Over the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, LSU extended their lead to 40 points, 78-38 with 8:07 left in the contest. LSU kept the petal down, outscoring San Diego State the rest of the way, 25-10 for a 103-48 victory for LSU. LSU will move on to round two where they will play Florida State on Monday at 5:00 pm in the Maravich Center.
