Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The Lady Tigers upset undefeated, #2 ranked Texas, 70-65 in front of 13,200 jubilant LSU fans in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Sunday afternoon. It was a SEC heavy weight fight and both teams went blow for blow all day with the Fighting Lady Tigers coming out on top for victory for LSU! The Ben-Gals shot 39% from the field for the game. They hit 3-13 from three point land for 23%. At the free throw line, LSU sank 15-19 for 79%. The Lady Tigers won the rebound battle, 44-35. Texas had 17 total turnovers while LSU committed 16. Williams led the Lady Tigers with 20 points. F. Johnson, Z. Johnson, Richard and Fulwiley all scored 10 points each. Joyner finished with 6 points and Knox added 4. The contest started scoreless with physical defensive action, until Flau'Jae Johnson hit a three point shot at the 9:01 mark to put LSU up 3-0. At the 3:46 media timeout, Texas led, 9-5. The game action remained very physical and the officials were letting these two SEC giants play and battle. We headed to the second period in an 11-11 tie as LSU would out-score the Lady Longhorns, 6-2 over the final 3:46 of the opening quarter. Both teams continued to shoot poorly from the field, but LSU managed to go on a 7-5 run to begin the second period to take an 18-16 lead, forcing Texas to call a timeout with 4:40 remaining in the half. The first half came to an end in electric fashion for LSU as Jada Richard hit a jumper at the buzzer to put the Lady Tigers up by five, 30-25 at the break. LSU out-scored Texas, 12-9 over the final four minutes of the half. The Ben-Gals shot 12-31 from the field in the first half for 39%. They only hit 1-4 from behind the arc for 25%. At the charity stripe, LSU sank 5-8 for 63%. The Lady Tigers out-rebounded Texas, 20-18. Texas committed 11 first half turnovers while LSU had 8. Williams led the team at the break with 11 points. Flau'Jae scored 7. Fulwiley and Z. Johnson both added 4 points each. Joyner and Richard contributed 2 points each. LSU began the third period with a 9-5 run to take a 39-30 advantage at the 6:01 mark, sending the Tiger fans in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center into a frenzy. We reached the 4:12 official's timeout in the third with LSU now up, 43-32. The PMAC erupted as Milaysia Fulwiley banked in a shot at the buzzer to end the third period, putting LSU up, 50-39. You just knew that the undefeated, second ranked Lady Longhorns wouldn't go away without going on a run. Texas out-scored LSU 13-5 to pull to within three, 55-52 with 6:03 remaining. LSU responded, scoring four unanswered to extend their advantage to 59-52 at the 5:00 mark. The Lady Tigers stood tall, answering each challenge to stay in control of the contest to pull off the impressive upset. With the victory, LSU improves to 16-2 overall and 2-2 in the SEC.
