Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - It was now the women's turn to participate in the SEC/ACC Challenge as the 5th ranked Lady Tigers play host to Stanford on Thursday night and treated the fans to a thrilling 94-88 overtime victory. It was an amazing come back win for the Ben-Gals. LSU trailed by five, 80-75 with 23 seconds left on the clock. That's when Kailyn Gilbert hit a three pointer to cut the lead to two. The Lady Tigers' defensive pressure forced a Stanford turnover with 15 seconds remaining. Mikaylah Williams then hit a jumper with four seconds left to tie the game at 80-80, sending the contest into overtime. The Lady Tigers took care of business in the extra period, making big shots, while playing great defense with a huge surge of hustle and energy. Stanford executed a great game plan, keeping the LSU offensive attack out of the paint all night, forcing the Lady Tigers to shoot from the outside. The strategy also helped keep LSU off the glass. Every time LSU would make a run, Stanford would come up with a huge basket to kill the LSU momentum. But LSU made the big shots late in the contest and stepped up on defense to steal victory away from the Cardinal. LSU shot 36-79 from the floor for 46% on the night. They had a really good night from three point land, hitting 10-25 for 40%. From the free throw line, the Lady Tigers sank, 12-18 for 67%. LSU only committed only four turnovers in the game while forcing 15. LSU had three big scorers on the night. Mikaylah Williams had 32 points to led the team. Kailyn Gilbert finished with 25 points and Flau'Jae Johnson scored 21 points. Aneesah Morrow and Shayeann Day-Wilson contributed 8 points each. Both teams opened the contest sinking a three pointer on their first possessions for a quick 3-3 tie early. Over the next four minutes, Stanford would go on a 13-2 run to take a 16-5 lead with 5:27 left in the first period. As the first quarter ended, Stanford held a 28-15 advantage thanks to their three point shooting. The Cardinal sank five three pointers in the opening period. LSU would outscore Stanford, 12-6 over the first five minutes of the second period to cut the Cardinal lead to 34-25 at the 4:40 mark. The Lady Tigers continued to battle hard against a very good Stanford team that was playing really well, going on a 10-5 run to end the second quarter. The game would head to halftime with Stanford leading LSU, 39-37. LSU only shot 39% from the floor in the first half. They hit 5-16 from behind the arc for 31%. They were a perfect, 2-2 from the charity stripe. The Ben-Gals only turned the ball over twice while forcing the Cardinal into nine. Stanford out-rebounded the Lady Tigers, 23-15 in the first half. Mikaylah Williams led the team at the break with 13 points. Kailyn Gilbert scored 8 points. Flau'Jae Johnson added 7. Shayeann Day-Wilson contributed 5 points and Aneessah Morrow had 4 points. Stanford started the second half with a 6-2 run to extend their lead to 48-39, causing Coach Mulkey to call a timeout at the 7:23 mark of the period. Over the next four minutes, LSU would go on a 9-4 run to cut the Cardinal lead to four, 52-48 with 3:38 left in the third quarter. The third quarter ended with Stanford still leading. LSU headed to the fourth period facing a 57-52 deficit. In the final quarter, Stanford continued to make big baskets to hold onto their lead, until late in the period. With the exciting victory, LSU improves to 10-0. Next up the Lady Tigers will travel to Bossier City to play Grambling on Sunday, December 8. Tipoff is set for 2:00 pm.
