Da Boot Sports 10/27/2024 BY: David Penn LOS ANGLES, CA - The Saints (2-6) continue to struggle on offense despite getting several starters back. The Chargers (4-3) didn’t look particularly sharp, but did execute better than New Orleans down the stretch. The Saints failed to find the end zone despite gaining over 350 yards of offense. Spencer Rattler again only completed 50% of his passes, going 12 of 24 for 156 yards with no TDs or INTs. Alvin Kamara combined for 122 yards from scrimmage, 67 rushing and 55 receiving. Chris Olave made his return from a concussion that kept him out for the last two games and grabbed 8 receptions for 107 yards. Taysom Hill also returned from a rib injury and had 21 yards receiving and 20 yards rushing. The defense played well in the first half, registering a safety to open scoring, and kept the Saints within striking distance until missed opportunities on offense failed to keep the Saints competitive on the scoreboard. The defense did register 3 sacks on the day and 6 TFL, but were unable to cover up the two Chargers fumbles. Down 2-0, the Chargers first points came on a field goal that gave them a 3-2 lead. The Chargers would then score a touchdown late in the second quarter with JK Dobbins punching it in from the 1 yard line, and then would miss the ensuing PAT to go up 9-2. The Saints would go on a 49 yard drive that ended with a Blake Grupe field goal that cut the LA lead to 9-5. The Saints would only manage a field goal in the second half, Grupe hitting one but missing another wide right that would have made it a one score game. After missing the field goal, the Chargers would score their last touchdown of the game which provided the final margin 26-8. The Saints did manage to drive down to the Chargers red zone on the last possession of the game, but were unable to convert, as the last pass of the game sailed over the head of Chris Olave. The Saints will travel to Charlotte, NC for their next game vs division rival Carolina (1-7). There is a possibility the starting QB Derek Carr will be ready to go for that contest. When asked about Carr’s return Rattler said, “Obviously we didn’t get any wins, so that’s very unfortunate, we want to win. Our goal is to come in here and win, get some momentum going.” Make sure you go to DaBootSports.com for all of your LSU, Saints and Southern University coverage all season long. Da Boot Sports 10/23/2024 Article Courtesy of Crescent City Sports By: CCS Staff In a significant move that underscores the New Orleans Saints’ commitment to their star running back Alvin Kamara has agreed to a contract extension. The two-year, $24.5 million extension includes over $22 million guaranteed and an additional $1.5 million in incentives, NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo reported Tuesday. Kamara’s agent Brad Ciclal confirmed the deal later in the day. Kamara, who was drafted by the Saints in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, has evolved into one of the most dynamic offensive players in the league. Known for his unique blend of speed, agility, and versatility, Kamara has consistently been a dual-threat, excelling both as a runner and a pass-catcher. His ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game makes him invaluable to the Saints’ offensive scheme. In his career thus far, Kamara has amassed over 5,000 rushing yards and 3,000 receiving yards, making him one of the few players in NFL history to reach these milestones within the first few seasons of his career. His impressive resume includes multiple Pro Bowl selections and All-Pro honors, highlighting his status as one of the elite players at his position. Kamara, who turned 29 in late July, continues to be a versatile weapon. It remains to be seen whether he or the contract will age well despite the star’s obvious value. With Sean Payton and the Broncos (4-3) visiting the dome for the first time since Payton became the Broncos head coach, the Saints didn’t appear to be in a position to even compete with Denver. With most of the Saints’ skill players out with injury, the Saints only bonafide offensive threat was Alvin Kamara and Denver was able to key in on Kamara who gained 10 yards rushing and 14 yards passing, his lowest offensive output of the season. As if the injuries that were already piling up for the black and gold weren’t enough, Paulson Adebo was carted off the field with a broken femur and Marshon Lattimore left the game early with a hamstring injury. Pete Werner was inactive due to a hamstring injury. Rasheed Shaeed has been ruled out for the season after surgery to repair his meniscus. Chris Olave also was not cleared to play after suffering a concussion in Sunday's game vs Tampa Bay. “It's been disappointing,” Allen said. “Injuries play a part of it but we've got to find a way to play better. “We're making mistakes we shouldn't be making,” Allen added. “Us as coaches and players alike, we've got to figure it out.” On offense, the Saints managed only 10 points, a field goal that was scored in the second quarter and a touchdown on their last possession while trailing 33-3 when the game was well out of hand. Spencer Rattler made his second start of the season and completed 25 of 35 passes, but was not able to lead the Saints to a touchdown before being replaced in the fourth quarter by Jake Haener. Rattler was sacked 6 times during the contest. The offense fumbled the ball away twice, after the first fumble the Broncos scored on the ensuing drive. The Broncos were able to scoop and score with the second fumble which capped the scoring for Denver at 33 points. Defensively, the Saints didn’t fare much better than the offense. Rookie quarterback Bo Nix was able to create with his feet throughout the game, consistently picking up first downs when scrambling out of the pocket. The Broncos rushed for 225 yards during the game and the Saints did not have an answer. The Saints will hit the road for the next contest in San Diego against the Chargers (3-2). The Saints have nine days to rest up and possibly see some starters return to help a team that is struggling badly without most of its offensive talent able to contribute. Injuries and mistakes continue to be a recurring theme for the Black and Gold and plagued the Saints again on Sunday. The Bucs took the opening drive the distance to take an early 7-0 lead. On the ensuing Saints possession Chris Olave fumbled a reception and the Bucs returned it for another touchdown to go up 14-0 only six and a half minutes into the game. The Saints started the second quarter trailing 17-0 but a frenetic 8 minutes of gameplay saw Rashid Shaeed return a punt for a touchdown, the defense forced a turnover, and the offense was able to punch it into the end zone. Before anyone could blink, the Saints were leading 27-24 following a 7 play 70 yard drive. The Saints would not score again the rest of the game, while the Buccaneers were able to take advantage of an interception, and poor tackling when the Saints defense was on the field, scoring 27 points in the second half. Spencer Rattler, the rookie QB’s first start, had some positive moments but looked very much like a rookie at other times. Rattler finished the game 22 of 40 for 243 yards, a TD, 25 yards rushing, and two INTs. On the play that Olave fumbled, he left the game for concussion protocol and did not return. The list of offensive inactives seems to grow each week. The Saints were already without Caesar Ruiz, Erik McCoy, Taysom Hill, and Derek Carr. “There were some encouraging things, some things that he’s going to learn from,” Allen said, noting that New Orleans' difficulty running the ball and defensive lapses in the second half made Rattler's job harder as the game wore on. “I don’t think we did enough around him to help him.” The normally steady defense gave up an uncharacteristically large number of plays and Baker Mayfield did a good job of extending plays with his feet and creating opportunities for his receivers. The Saints defense gave up at least seven plays where the Tampa Bay offense gained more than 20 yards. It’s not often that a defense creates three turnovers comes out on the wrong end of the scoreboard, but the Saints gave up 594 yards of offense, 277 of which were gained on the ground. It’s a short turn around for the Saints as they will host Sean Payton and the Broncos in the Super Dome on Thursday night. It will be the first time Payton will coach in New Orleans as the opposing coach. The Broncos will arrive at 3-3 with Bo Nix, their own rookie QB under center. The Saints entered 2-2 but had been largely impressive, except in closing games. The thought was the Saints, even with a beat-up team, would have a real shot at an upset. Instead, New Orleans left Kansas City upset and left many fans upset with a poor performance. The Chiefs awakened while the Saints regressed, leaving Kansas City in depressed fashion after the Chiefs impressed in a 26-13 victory. It was not that close. Though New Orleans drew within three points early in the fourth quarter, the outcome was never in doubt. The Chiefs controlled both sides of the line-of-scrimmage, took away the run game of the Saints and ran the ball well. The Saints were getting knocked back on both sides of the ball, pushed around. A makeshift offensive line simply could not hold up. Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes passed over and around the Saints all evening. The only thing keeping the game from being a blowout was Kansas City not being able to finish drives, settling for a total of four field goals and missing one. Here are my Quick Takes on the game: **Inactives for the Saints included Kristian Boyd, Willie Gay, Taysom Hill, Cesar Ruiz, Payton Turner and Pete Werner. **The Saints won the toss and decided to take the ball first. The Chiefs had given up points in each of the first four games on the opponent’s opening possession. **Lucas Patrick started at center with Landon Young at left guard, Trevor Penning at right tackle, rookie Nick Saldiveri at right guard and Taliese Fuaga at left tackle. **Derek Carr got Juwan Johnson involved in the first play from scrimmage with a 7-yard completion. Johnson came into the game with just four catches. **Alvin Kamara took a toss sweep right on third-and-one and it was totally contained. Kamara reversed field and made a brilliant 9-yard run for the first down. **Carr, under heavy pressure from an unblocked George Karlaftis, just heaved one up, trying to throw it away and Bryan Cook made a brilliant interception at the Kansas City 22-yard line. Carr did not throw it far enough. Karlaftis blitzed and Kamara was late recognizing it and was not able to block him. **Anfernee Orji and D’Marco Jackson played on the first series in the absence of Werner and Gay. They were ineffective. **The Chiefs took advantage, driving 78 yards in 10 plays, taking 5:25 off the clock with Kareem Hunt scoring on a 5-yard run to make it 7-0 with 6:34 to play in the opening quarter. **On the drive Mahomes was 4-for-4 for 46 yards, with all completions to tight ends, including three to Travis Kelce for 31 yards. **It was the first time this year that an opponent scored on the Saints on the opening drive. **Carr missed Mason Tipton on a deep out route on the next series and the Saints went three-and-out. **New Orleans got a stop, forcing a punt and Rico was flagged for holding, hurting the field position for the Saints, who had to start at their own 23-yard line. **Taliese Fuaga then committed a false start penalty to move it back to the 18-yard-line. **The Saints went three-and-out again as Carr tried to force a deep ball to Rashid Shaheed into double coverage on third down. **The Chiefs finished the first quarter with 113 yards to just 38 yards for the Saints. **A holding call on Jawaan Taylor against Carl Granderson, negated a touchdown pass from Mahomes to Noah Gray. **The Chiefs had to settle for a 26-yard field goal by Harrison Butker to make it 10-0 with 12:39 to play in the half. The drive covered 52 yards in 10 plays. **Carr finally came through, hitting Shaheed on a 43-yard touchdown pass to make it 10-7 with 8:36 to play in the half. Shaheed made a good fake to the outside and broke to the post and burned Cook for the score. **Shaheed has become an elite deep threat. He now has catches of 70, 59 and 43 yards this season. Shaheed also had a 47-yard punt return against Carolina. **Shaheed now has nine touchdowns of 40 or more yards in his young career, third most in franchise history. Joe Horn has 11 while Devery Henderson had 10. Horn and Henderson are Saints Hall of Fame inductees. **Per Next Gen Stats, it was Shaheed’s ninth reception of 50+ yards of air distance in his career, the most in the NFL since he entered the league in 2022. **Safety Will Harris went down injured for the Saints with 6:36 to play in the half and limped off the field with a hamstring injury and did not return. He was replaced by Johnathan Abram. **Alontae Taylor blew up a reverse on a blitz, forcing a fumble by Carson Steele for a loss or 24 yards but the Chiefs recovered. **Trey Smith was then flagged for holding Nate Shepherd. **The Chiefs overcame a second-and-34 and a third-and-22 on the drive, illustrating porous defense by New Orleans. **Chase Young sacked Mahomes to stall the drive. Young has had pressures but finally got home to collect a sack. **Butker came on to kick a 34-yard field goal to give Kansas City a 13-7 lead with 1:32 to play in the half. **The drive covered 64 yards in 15 plays. **Jamaal Williams, who for some reason is deemed a kickoff return man, made a bad decision and tried to return a kick in the end zone and nearly put a knee down at the 1-yard-line. He returned it to the 21 and the Saints promptly went three-and-out, using just 20 seconds. **That gave Mahomes the ball at his own 36-yard-line with 56 seconds remaining in the half and a timeout. You knew what he would do. **Mahomes hit JuJu Smith-Schuster with a 31-yard completion. Schuster was uncovered as the Saints blew a coverage. Schuster then made another catch for a first down. **That set up a 28-yard field goal by Butker to give the Chiefs a 16-7 lead with six seconds left in the half. The drive covered 55 yards in nine plays. **Kansas City totally dominated the half. The Chiefs amassed 277 yards in the half to just 112 for the Saints. New Orleans had just 27 yards rushing. Kansas City had the ball for 19:39 to just 10:21 for the Saints. **The Chiefs ran 44 plays to just 22 for the Saints. **Kelce had eight catches for 67 yards in the half while Mahomes was 19-of-27 for 216 yards. **Paulson Adebo got away with pass interference on a deep ball toward the end zone on a pass attempt from Mahomes to Xavier Worthy. Adebo has already committed six penalties, four of which were accepted. He has to clean it up. **The Saints caught a break when Butker’s 51-yard field attempt hit the right upright. **It did not matter. Chris Olave committed a very costly illegal motion penalty to negate a first down and on the next play, Carr was sacked on a jailbreak as the entire New Orleans offensive line failed to protect him, forcing a punt. **The next time, Adebo was flagged for a 46-yard pass interference penalty, another obvious foul as he continues to hurt his team. **Khalen Saunders became involved in a potential game-changing play against his former team. Kansas City reached the New Orleans 2-yard line, Mahomes tried to hit Schuster at the goal line. Adebo had tight coverage and got a hand on the ball to knock it out of Schuster’s mitts into the arms of Saunders, who picked it off in the end zone and returned it to the 35-yard-line. **It was the first interception in the career of Saunders and the longest interception return by a Saints defensive tackle in franchise history. **Connor McGovern took over at center late in the third quarter as Lucas Patrick left the game injured. Patrick returned in the fourth quarter to play left guard. **The Saints pulled within 16-13 with 14:16 to play in the game as Carr hit Foster Moreau on a 6-yard touchdown pass to cap an eight play, 65-yard drive. Moreau sold that he was blocking well, released and was wide open. **Unfortunately, Blake Grupe pulled the extra point attempt wide left, a critical miss to leave the Saints still down by three points. It was his second missed extra point. **The momentum would not last. **Mahomes answered with a 50-yard completion to Schuster to the New Orleans 14-yard-line. On the play, he got a matchup with a safety in Tyrann Mathieu, who slipped and fell. **That set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Worthy to make it 23-13 with 11:56 to play in the game. The Chiefs needed just five plays to go 68 yards. **On fourth down midway through the fourth quarter, Carr, against enormous pressure with an eight-man blitz, made a good deep throw on a fourth down to Tipton, who allowed the ball to go through his arms, though it was a tough catch to make. **Carr took a huge hit and headed to the medical tent, then to the locker room with an oblique injury. **That was the last gasp for the Saints. **Kansas City delivered the final blow, driving **Bryan Bresee got a sack to prevent a touchdown. **Butker kicked a 38-yard-field goal to make it 26-13 with 3:03 to play in the game. The drive covered 38 yards in 11 plays. **Jake Haener took over at quarterback the rest of the way, going 2-of-7 for 17 yards and running for his life. Kansas City riddled the Saints for 460 yards. Hunt, who was on the street two weeks ago, rushed 27 times for 102 yards and a touchdown while Mahomes completed 28-of-39 passes for 331 yards and an interception. The Saints had just 220 total yards. Carr is now 3-15 all-time against the Chiefs. He hopes he doesn’t see them again. Under duress all night and without a run game, Carr completed 18-of-25 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns with an interception. How dominant were the Chiefs against a poor Saints defense? Kansas City reached the red zone seven times in nine possessions. The Saints could not get off the field on defense and could not stay on the field on offense much of the night. Kansas City had the ball for 39:36 to just 10:24 for New Orleans. The Chiefs ran 80 plays to just 51 snaps for the Saints. Kansas City receivers were running free all night. The failure of the New Orleans defense in the fourth quarter reared its ugly head for the third straight week, giving up 10 points in the final frame. Now, the depleted Saints faced a depleted week, in terms of preparation for an important division game with Tampa Bay Sunday. The Buccaneers are very well rested, having played last Thursday night and they will prepare in New Orleans all week, escaping the wrath of Hurricane Milton bearing down on Tampa. Letting two games get away that they should have won was going to haunt the Saints regardless. Now, with this performance in Kansas City, the haunting may get worse, if not much worse, prior to Halloween, particularly if Carr cannot play next Sunday. The promise of a 2-0 start and seemingly unstoppable offense is a fleeting memory as the promise has turned into pessimism and frustration with mounting injuries and failure to execute as the Saints have stopped, stopping themselves in Atlanta and getting stopped in Kansas City.
