Da Boot Sports 11/17/2024 Article courtesy of Crescent City Sports By: Ken Trahan Everyone was wondering how it would go. After an inspired effort in the first game for Interim head coach Darren Rizzi following a coaching change, could the Saints sustain the effort, momentum and get the desired result a second time? That question was answered in definitive fashion. The Saints are not a great team, not even good, at this point, but they are clearly better under Rizzi. It certainly helped that Erik McCoy returned and played much of the game, though he would leave again with persistent groin problems. Jameis Winston returned to New Orleans against his former team and he played good inspired football. The Saints had the answers, with solid offensive play from Derek Carr and others and with a huge special teams play to overcome a pair of turnovers to post a second straight win. Here are my Quick Takes on the 35-14 win over the Browns: **Inactives for the Saints were Khristian Boyd, Millard Bradford, Jaylan Ford, Lucas Patrick, Mason Tipton and Jamaal Williams. Spencer Rattler was designated as the third quarterback. **The Saints won the toss and deferred, giving the Browns the ball first. **The Browns opted to go for it on fourth-and-one from the New Orleans 49-yard-line and Demario Davis stuffed Nick Chubb for a two-yard loss. **The Saints ran a trick play as Taysom Hill took a pitch from Carr and hit Kevin Austin for 18 yards to the Cleveland 13-yard-line. **Hill then scored on an RPO, faking to Alvin Kamara and sweeping right, beating safety Juan Thornhill to the pylon to give the Saints a 7-0 lead with 9:54 to play in the opening quarter. It was Hill’s 13th career rushing touchdown and the 42nd overall touchdown, placing hm ninth in franchise history. **The drive covered six plays, 49 yards, taking 2:34 off the clock. **Will Harris was flagged for a personal foul on the next Cleveland possession. **Trevor Penning, who has played well of late, was flagged for holding on a second-and-one at midfield. **On fourth-and-one from the Cleveland 33-yard-line, the Saints went for it. Carr, rolling right and under pressure, made a brilliant throw of 30 yards to Foster Moreau to the 3-yard-line but it was negated by a holding penalty on Juwan Johnson, forcing a Saints punt. **On the play, Moreau injured his shoulder but he was able to return. **It took the Browns just one play to tie the game as Winston, stepping up and rolling left, broke contain and found an open Jerry Jeudy, who whipped Alontae Taylor badly with a fake to the outside and a move inside. Jeudy caught it in stride and nothing but green space in front of him with the Saints in man coverage and he raced 89 yards for a touchdown. **On the extra point attempt, Carl Granderson committed a neutral zone infraction, putting the ball at the 1-yard-line. The Browns went for two and it failed as Cam Jordan pressured Winston and he threw it away as the Saints maintained a 7-6 lead with 1:52 to play in the opening quarter. **It was the third longest pass play ever against the Saints in franchise history. **Hill continued his outstanding day, returning the ensuing kickoff 42 yards to the New Orleans 41-yard-line. **On the next play, Hill lined up at quarterback and tried to throw deep into double coverage for Marquez Valdes-Scantling, was intercepted by Denzel Ward. The play had no chance. **Carl Granderson tackled Kadarius Toney for a loss of seven yards on the next series. **The Browns finished the first quarter with 121 yards, including 89 on one play, to 113 for the Saints. **The Saints responded with a big play of their own. On third-and-one from the New Orleans 29-yard-line, Carr faked a handoff to Kamara, who was in motion, rolled left and hit Valdes-Scantling, wide open, who then raced 79 yards for a score to give the Saints a 14-6 lead with 12:40 to play in the first half. **It was the third touchdown on just four catches in two weeks for Valdes-Scantling. Valdes-Scantling is the first Saint with receptions of 60 or more yards in consecutive games since Reggie Bush did it in 2006 against San Francisco and Dallas. **McCoy, whose presence was making a huge difference at center, went to the injury tent in the second quarter. **On the next Cleveland possession, Bryan Bresee sacked Winston to stall the drive. **Dustin Hopkins missed a 51-yard field goal wide left. **On the next series, Carr hit Johnson for 20 yards and the Saints reached the six-yard line but on a completion, Hill was hit by Ward, fumbled and Ward recovered at the 7-yard line. **Hopkins missed a 32-yard field goal wide left again with 11 seconds left in the half but Payton Turner, inexplicably, was called for defensive holding, giving Cleveland a first down and goal at the 9-yard line. **Davis almost came up with an interception two plays later but could not pull it down. **Hopkins then missed a 27-yard field goal wide left to end the half. **The Saints lost the turnover battle by two in the half and still maintained an 8-point lead at the half. **Cleveland finished the half with 227 yards to 185 for the Saints. **Carr was 13-of-15 for 167 yards and a touchdown and had a 30-yard completion negated by penalty. **Winston was 15-of-24 for 234 yards and a touchdown. **Opposing kickers have missed six field goals in the last six quarters against the Saints in Caesars Superdome. **Cleveland drove and scored on its first possession of the second half as Winston hit Elijah Moore with a 30-yard touchdown pass. Moore toe-tapped both feet in against the right sideline for the score. **The Browns went for two and the tie and Winston hit David Nkoju to tie the game 14-14 with 8:49 to play in the third quarter. **The drive covered 92 yards in eight plays, taking 4:12 off the clock. **Ogbo Okoronkwo had a sack of Carr on the next series, stripping Carr as he beat Penning. **Shane Lemieux replace McCoy late in the third quarter as the groin issue for McCoy reared its ugly head again. **Carr hit Moreau for 22 yards and a first down on the final play of the third quarter. **The Browns totaled 362 yards to 303 for New Orleans through three quarters. **The Saints took the lead 21-14 with 13:22 to play. On fourth-and-one from the Cleveland 33-yard-line. Carr lined up at quarterback with Hill at tailback. Carr motioned out, Hill took a direct snap, ran left, broke two tackles and raced 33 yards for a touchdown. **The drive went 77 yards in nine plays, taking 4:56 off the clock. **That increased Hill’s touchdown log to 43 as a Saint. **Bresee got his second sack of the game on the next series before Granderson sacked Winston on the next play to force a punt. **Dante Pettis returned the ensuing punt 53 yards to the Cleveland 35-yard-line. Pettis reached the end zone but it was ruled that he stepped out of bounds with his left foot. It was very close. **The Saints capitalized, driving 35 yards in six plays with Carr hitting Johnson with a 1-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-14 with 6:04 to play in the game. **After getting a stop, Hill put the game on ice, breaking a 75-yard touchdown run to blow it open at 35-14 with 2:26 to play in the game. It was his 44th touchdown as a Saint. Carr was very good, going 21-of-27 for 248 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Three of his incomplete passes were on passes he simply threw away. He is playing excellent football with limited wide receivers and protecting the ball. Hill overcame his two turnovers with electric plays, scoring three touchdowns. Hill accounted for 249 total yards, including 18 passing, 138 rushing, 50 receiving and 43 yards on a kickoff return. As is always the case, when Hill gets plenty of touches, good things happen. The Browns were down two tackles and had allowed 43 sacks on the season, the most in the league. It took a while for the Saints to get the needed pressure on Winston but it came later in the game. Winston played well, finishing 30-of-46 for 395 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Credit to him. As was the case in the win over Atlanta, the Saints bent defensively but did not break. As was the case in the win over the Falcons, the opposing kicker had an awful day. It was a good day all around. On Saints Hall of Fame Alumni Weekend, many former players were in attendance and honored Jahri Evans at halftime with induction in the Saints Ring of Honor. The current Saints did the current assistant coach (Evans) and former players proud by performing well. The Saints (4-7) have a bye before hosting the Los Angeles Rams Dec. 1. It is a good day to be a Saint and to be a Saints fan. Make sure you go to DaBootSports.com for all of your LSU, Saints and Southern University coverage all season long. In his debut as the interim head coach, Darren Rizzi displayed emotion and passion that many opinioned was missing under Dennis Allen and the Saints snapped a seven game losing streak against the division leading Falcons (6-4). In the first half, Derek Carr flashed the deep ball that’s been missing in the absence of WR Rashid Shaheed with recently acquired WR Marquez Valdez Scantling, who hauled in three receptions for 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Valdez Scantling scored on a 40 yard reception, and his 67 yard reception set up his second receiving touchdown which allowed the Saints to enter halftime with a 17-7 lead over the visitors. Alvin Kamara became the Saints all-time leading rusher, passing former teammate Mark Ingram for the honor. Kamara carried 17 times for 55 yards and caught 5 passes for another 54 yards. The defense showed up and played inspired football against a Falcons offense that has scored an average of 25 points over their last 6 contests. The Saints didn’t pressure Kirk Cousins much throughout the contest, but the pressure arrived during the most pivotal moments of the fourth quarter when Cam Jordan registered his first sack of the season and two plays later Younghoe Koo would miss his third field goal attempt of the game, leaving the score 20-17 in favor of the Saints. On the Falcons’ next possession, an errant throw by Cousins would end up in the hands of Tyrann Mathieu with just under two minutes left on the game clock, but the Saints would only manage to possess the ball for 24 seconds before punting the ball back to Atlanta with 1:35 left. Chase Young would sack Cousins for a nine yard loss and force a fumble that was recovered by the Falcons, which made it 2nd and 29 with about :34 seconds to play. Cousins would hit TE Kyle Pitts on the sideline to stop the clock with :28 seconds remaining for 7 yards, setting up 3rd and 22. Cousins then completed another pass to Pitts, this time in the middle of the field and with zero timeouts remaining the clock running with a down and distance of 4th and 4. Cousins would get the snap off with 6 seconds remaining, swinging the ball short left to Ray-Ray McCloud who was tackled inbounds as the clock struck zero. Each team missed several opportunities to increase their own point totals, the Saints elected to go for it on 4th and goal in the first quarter rather than kicking a field goal, the 4th down conversion failed. Koo, who was almost automatic in the first meeting between the two teams, missed three field goal attempts during the contest. Kamara uncharacteristically dropped a wide open pass late in the fourth quarter that would have seen him walk into the end zone as he was several yards behind the coverage when the ball went through his hands. In all, the Saints and interim coach Darren Rizzi are happy to leave the Caesar's Superdome with their first win in nearly two months. The Saints will begin preparation for the visiting Cleveland Browns (2-7) who are facing struggles of their own. All eyes will be on Rizzi and the Saints to see how the team follows up his head coaching debut. **Make sure you go to DaBootSports.com for all of your LSU, Saints and Southern University coverage all season long.
